'Creeping Authoritarianism': Motion Against Search Engine Age Checks Passes Australian Senate
An urgent motion to prevent search engine users from being subject to age verification has passed Australia’s Senate with sweeping support from across the political spectrum.
Put forth by United Australia Party Senator Ralph Babet, the motion was supported by the right-wing One Nation party, the centre-right Coalition, and the far-left Greens.
Senators David Pocock, Lidia Thorpe, and Fatima Payman—who tend towards the left-wing spectrum—also backed Babet’s motion.
The motion was not supported by Labor senators.
A proposal to demand age verification for signed-in users of search engines was proposed by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner in early July as the government continues to crack down on access to online content for under-16s.
The Epoch Times understands several methods could be used to verify age, including ID checks, face scanning, credit card checks, vouching from a parent, AI guesswork or the results of a third party that has already verified the age of the internet user.
The proposal builds on legislation to ban under-16s from social media which passed parliament in November 2024.
An eSafety spokesperson told The Epoch Times earlier in July that the move to restrict children’s access to search engines was a protective measure to limit exposure to harmful content.
But in his speech in the Senate, Babet said it would come at the cost of every Australian’s right to privacy.

It is the second-largest annual numerical rise in more than 75 years – behind only the increase of more than 800,000 people that took place from mid-2022 to mid-2023.
There were an estimated 61.8 million people in England and Wales in mid-2024, up 706,881 from 61.1 million in mid-2023, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Almost all of this increase was due to international migration, with natural change – the difference between births and deaths – accounting for only a small proportion.
Net international migration – the difference between people moving to the country and leaving – accounted for 690,147 of the estimated population increase of 706,881 people, or 98% of the total, the ONS said.
Some 1,142,303 people were estimated to have come to England and Wales as immigrants in the 12 months to June 2024 while 452,156 were likely to have emigrated. …

Among those arrested was Chris Smalls, the American labour activist known for leading the successful effort to unionise Amazon workers in Staten Island in 2022. That same year, he was invited by former US President Joe Biden to the White House to discuss labour organising strategies.
Details that emerged on Monday revealed that Smalls was not only detained but also violently beaten by Israeli soldiers.
In a statement on Instagram, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said: “Upon arrival in Israeli custody, US human rights defender Chris Smalls was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals. They choked him and kicked him in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back.”
The absence of major coverage of the incident by US media outlets has raised questions among activists and observers.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday admitted that a provision in Republicans' One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a mechanism for privatizing Social Security—something President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he won't do.
Speaking at a policy event hosted by the far-right news site Breitbart, Bessent touted the so-called "Trump accounts" available to all U.S. citizen children starting next July under the OBBBA signed by the president earlier this month.
"In a way, it is a backdoor way for privatizing Social Security," the billionaire former hedge fund manager said of the accounts. "Social Security is a defined benefit plan paid out—that to the extent that if all of a sudden these accounts grow, and you have in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for your retirement, that's a game-changer."
Responding to Bessent's admission, Tim Hogan—the Democratic National Committee senior adviser for messaging, mobilization, and strategy—said that the treasury secretary "just said the quiet part out loud: The administration is scheming to privatize Social Security."
"It wasn't enough to kick millions of people off their healthcare and take food away from hungry kids," Hogan added. "Trump is now coming after American seniors with a 'backdoor' scam to take away the benefits they earned. Democrats won't stand by as Trump screws over working families in order to give more handouts to billionaires."

With negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release deal having stalled, Israel has sent a message to Hamas that if it doesn’t accept the proposal on the table in the coming days, Jerusalem will begin to take punitive measures against it, including the annexation of territory on Gaza’s outer perimeter, senior Israeli officials told Kan and Channel 13 news on Wednesday.
The reports came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with a small group of top aides and ministers to discuss ongoing efforts to make some progress toward a deal with Hamas.
Talks slowly continue in Cairo a week after Israel and the US pulled their negotiation teams from Qatar amid reported frustrations with Hamas’s inflexibility and introduction of new terms in its last proposal.
According to a senior Israeli official speaking to Channel 12, Jerusalem on Tuesday night gave mediators a document with key points in response to Hamas’s unsatisfactory reply last week, including its red lines on troop deployments and prisoner releases.
According to the report, Israel told Hamas that it will not leave the Phildelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border or the buffer zone around the Gaza border; will not allow the opening of the Rafah Crossing; and will not agree to Hamas demands for a prisoner release so far-reaching it will leave few bargaining chips in Jerusalem’s hands to compel Hamas to release the last batch of hostages in a potential ceasefire.
Israel assumes Hamas will not show any further flexibility, the report added.
“Israel will not be patient for much longer,” a senior Israeli official said.
However, Channel 12 reported that there was currently no appetite in the White House to greenlight an Israeli move to annex parts of the Strip.
Meanwhile, United States special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff traveled to Israel on Wednesday amid growing concern in the Trump administration over the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Mounting reports of an increasingly dire situation in the Palestinian enclave, including rising deaths from malnutrition and starvation, have sparked global outrage as well as concern from US President Donald Trump.
Witkoff’s visit, which was first reported by Axios, is his first to the country since May, and comes amid the stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas — for which both Jerusalem and Washington have blamed the terror group.
An Israeli official confirmed Wikoff’s trip to The Times of Israel, with a US official following suit, telling reporters that the envoy was traveling and would “meet with officials to discuss next steps in addressing the situation in Gaza.”
“The president wants to know more about what the humanitarian situation in Gaza is in order to know how to get more assistance to civilians in Gaza,” one official told Axios, after Trump stressed the importance of getting Gazans fed during a trip to Scotland.
Witkoff may also enter the Strip to observe aid distribution sites run by the controversial US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, according to the report.
