IDF declares defeat of Hamas battalion in Beit Hanoun, as operatives shown surrendering
Aug 2, 2025 5:12 pm
The Israel Defense Forces defeated Hamas’s Beit Hanoun battalion, the military declared on Saturday, after three of the terror group’s operatives surrendered to troops of the Givati Brigade in the northern Gaza town.
The operatives emerged from a tunnel and surrendered to the forces in the area, the IDF said, adding that they told the troops they had sought to flee the area after another gunman with them was killed during a previous exchange of fire with the military.
The Hamas gunmen also led the forces to a weapons depot near the tunnel from which they emerged, where the IDF said the troops found numerous weapons and equipment.
The military stated that troops also discovered food, water, and other supplies inside the tunnel, suggesting it could be used for long-term underground residence.
The IDF said the three operatives were taken for further interrogation, the weapons were seized, and combat engineers are mapping out the tunnel ahead of its demolition.
“The Beit Hanoun Battalion, which posed a threat to Nir Am and Sderot, has surrendered and been defeated by Givati Brigade troops,” the IDF said.
Defense Minister Israel Katz posted footage of the operatives surrendering on X. “Hamas terrorists are surrendering in Beit Hanoun.
They are emerging from the burrows into the destroyed city,” he wrote. “The IDF is destroying both the above and the underground [infrastructure] to defend the city of Sderot.”
Last week, during a tour of Beit Hanoun, the commander of the Givati Brigade told reporters that there were just four or five remaining gunmen in the area.
The IDF has operated in Beit Hanoun five times since the beginning of the war, slowly degrading Hamas’s battalion there, which, before October 7, 2023, consisted of over 1,000 operatives.
The majority of the Hamas gunmen in the Beit Hanoun Battalion were either killed during the fighting or fled, like the battalion commander, Hussein Fayyad.
The IDF’s declaration on Beit Hanoun followed a Channel 12 news report, which stated that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir had pleaded with cabinet ministers this week to present a strategy for how they wanted the army to proceed amid the standstill in hostage talks.
Zamir reportedly emphasized that the government lacks a clear game plan, as Jerusalem’s diplomatic standing has plummeted due to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, Zamir told troops inside Gaza he estimates “that in the coming days we will know whether we will be able to reach a partial deal to release our hostages,” otherwise “the fighting will continue unabated.”

More deaths reported at aid sites
Israel has been facing growing global scrutiny over the amount of aid distributed to civilians in Gaza since a ceasefire with Hamas ended in March, amid reports of hunger in the enclave.
Much of the criticism has focused on the hundreds of reported deaths at aid distribution sites run by the Israel-and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Hospitals in Gaza reported Saturday the killing of more than a dozen people, eight of them food-seekers, by Israeli fire as Palestinians endured severe risks in their search for food amid airdrops and restrictions on overland aid delivery.
Near a GHF distribution site, Yahia Youssef, who had come to seek aid, described to the Associated Press a panicked scene now grimly familiar.
After helping carry out three people wounded by gunshots, he said he looked around and saw many others lying on the ground, bleeding.
“It’s the same daily episode,” Youssef said.
In response to questions about several eyewitness accounts of violence at the northernmost of GHF’s four sites, the GHF media office said “nothing [happened] at or near our sites.”
Meanwhile, the IDF on Friday afternoon announced the largest airdrop operation since efforts to increase the supply of aid to Gaza began, with 126 packages of humanitarian supplies from six countries being dropped by aircraft in the coastal enclave.
Aircraft from Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and — for the first time in over a year — Spain, Germany, and France airdropped food in both northern and southern Gaza.
The IDF said the airdrops were carried out “in accordance with the directives from the political echelon and as part of the cooperation between Israel, the UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Spain, France, and Germany.”
The airdrops are part of a “series of actions aimed at improving the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip,” the military said.
“The IDF will continue to work in order to improve the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip, along with the international community, while refuting the false claims of deliberate starvation in Gaza,” it added.
On Saturday, another 90 packages of aid were airdropped by Jordan, the UAE, Germany, and France in Gaza, the military said.
The war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists invaded Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 251. Of the 50 hostages who remain in Gaza, the IDF has confirmed the deaths of 28.
The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 60,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters.
Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.
Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.
Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at 459. The toll includes two police officers and three Defense Ministry civilian contractors.

Iraqi Delegation in Erbil to Investigate Drone Attacks on Kurdistan Oil Infrastructure
Aug 2, 2025
An Iraqi government delegation composed of intelligence and security officers arrived in Erbil on Saturday to investigate a wave of drone attacks that have targeted the Kurdistan Region’s critical energy infrastructure and security facilities throughout July.
The delegation arrived on Saturday and is scheduled to visit oil fields in the Kurdistan Region and meet with several officials from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), according to information obtained by Kurdistan24.
A member of the visiting delegation told Kurdistan24 correspondent Hoshmand Sadiq that the investigative team will need time to thoroughly probe all the drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region and work towards resolving the issue.
According to the correspondent, the delegation consists of several intelligence and Joint Operations officers.
This visit follows a previous high-level engagement earlier in the week. On Monday, July 28, a top-tier Iraqi delegation led by National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji arrived in Erbil and was received by KRG Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmed.
In a joint press conference held after their meeting, al-Araji strongly condemned the repeated assaults.
"The drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region harm Iraq's reputation and economy," he stated. "We condemn the attacks, and the attackers will receive their punishment."
The urgency of the investigations is underscored by the sheer frequency and scope of the recent attacks. Since the beginning of July, more than 20 drone attacks have been launched against cities across the Kurdistan Region.
Nine of these attacks have specifically targeted vital oil fields, including Khurmala, Khor Mor, Sarsink, Atrush, Bai Hassan, Peshkhabur, Tawke, and facilities operated by Hunt Oil.
The other attacks have been directed at security forces and airports within the region.

New law goes into effect restricting drone fly zones in Louisiana
August 01, 2025 6:16 PM
BATON ROUGE - Nearly three hundred laws went into effect Aug. 1, and one of them allows law enforcement to take down suspicious drones, and it also outlines where drones cannot fly without permission, like parades and around critical infrastructure.
After various state agencies called out the lack of regulation, Louisiana law now designates where drones can fly.
“I do think that they are a good move forward, but at the same time, I don't know how legal they are,” Paul Charbonnet, owner of Atmosphere Drones, said.
Charbonnet has flown drones for more than 15 years, traveling the country, flying drones for the government, commercials, and film.
He’s worked on shows for Disney where he’s been able to fly a drone in NASA’s airspace, which he says is extremely uncommon.
Until the law went into effect on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration chose which spaces were considered off-limits, and there's questions about how the federal and state law interact.
“Now today, Louisiana says they can create that airspace,” Charbonnet said, and he worries about what will happen if every state creates similar restrictions and about whether there will be consistency from state to state.
The new law allows law enforcement to track down and take down drones that pose a threat to public safety.

When Scotland was the world's UFO hot spot
Aug 2, 2025
Thirty years ago, Scotland was the centre of the UFO world. The 1990s started with a photograph that has achieved almost folkloric status as one of the best images of an Unidentified Flying Object.
Then came a flood of sightings of mystery objects in a part of central Scotland which came to be known as the Falkirk Triangle.
These captured the world's imagination, attracting journalists from around the globe and leading to claims of conspiracies, cover-ups and cheap publicity stunts.
The truth may still be out there. It is certainly complicated. And three decades on, what actually happened is still the subject of passionate debate.
Bonnybridge is a village of about 6,000 people near Falkirk. It lies close to the main Edinburgh to Glasgow rail line and Forth and Clyde canal.
Like many of the surrounding towns and villages, the manufacturing industries which once prospered there are long gone. It is a quiet, tucked-away part of the country and was probably on few radars until 1992, when locals started reporting strange lights in the skies.
Malcolm Robinson has lived in the area for most of his life. He has been interested in UFOs and the paranormal since childhood and founded the amateur research group Strange Phenomena Investigations (SPI) in 1979.
In 1992, he became aware of something on his own doorstep.
"I heard about it on a local radio station," he says. "Billy Buchanan, the local councillor, was on there talking about these UFO sightings and I went: 'Wow, by God I really need to get in touch with him and see if I can lend any assistance'."
Councillor Buchanan had begun collecting reports from constituents who said they had seen strange lights and objects in the sky. Things they did not recognise, things they could not explain.
Towards the end of that year, he had recorded more than 200 incidents.
It is important to say that the term UFO means Unidentified Flying Object. It does not describe alien ships visiting the earth.
The Bonnybridge UFO reports covered a wide spectrum of events, including a motorist describing lights in the form of a cross hovering above a road before morphing into a triangle.
On another occasion a family witnessed a bright circle of light landing in a field.
Media interest was immediate and intense. The local newspaper and national tabloids were hungry for headlines. TV reporters joked about alien visitors but still came looking for stories.
News crews were dispatched to cover a UFO watch, held on a cold November night. They left without a close encounter.
A public meeting was held in January 1993. Concerned locals were looking for answers. The term Falkirk Triangle was coined, covering the area between Stirling, Falkirk and West Lothian.
Those who study UFOs know that media reporting leads to greater public awareness and more sightings. That certainly happened around Bonnybridge.
Sightings continued to make headlines for another three or four years. In 1997, they were the subject of the prime time TV programme Strange But True.
In it, Billy Buchanan talks about writing to the recently elected Prime Minister Tony Blair, demanding an investigation. His request was declined.
Videos, photographs and tales of unexplained encounters continued. But the story drew accusations of fakery, publicity-seeking and even tabloid newspaper claims that aliens had been in contact with locals.
Malcolm Robinson was there throughout - investigating the reports, following up what people said they had seen and checking air traffic, police and military records.
"I was astonished by how massive the story was," he says. "Everybody and their granny wanted to know about what was going on there. And quite rightly so.
"The problem we got is that some members of the media community were hyping things up. So if it was 100 sightings it suddenly became 1,000 sightings."
Malcolm puts the total number of sightings in the region at about 350 between 1982, the year he began recording incidents, and today.
Craig Lindsay was a Ministry of Defence (MoD) press officer in Scotland during that period and remembers recording the reports.
"When I started work there in 1989 I fairly quickly discovered that nearly always in the evening there would be someone calling RAF Pitreavie about lights in the sky or something like that.
"Nearly always around Falkirk, Bonnybridge, to the point that we actually had what you call a pro forma form. If the controllers weren't busy, they would just fill in the form and send it off to London.
1/3
"But if they were busy, they would divert the call to me, and I would speak to the person and get the details and I would fax the thing off to London and we never heard anything more about them. It was a fairly common occurrence.
"It was just, to be blunt, folks coming out of the pub and seeing things." But the Falkirk Triangle is not the only UFO mystery to come from that period.
This weekend, at a public talk in Perthshire, enthusiasts will gather to discuss one of the subject's most enduring mysteries.
What was captured by camera in the skies above Calvine on a summer's day in 1990?
The photo we see today is grainy and indistinct. It is framed by the branches of a tree and a wood and wire fence. Between them, low in the sky, is a diamond-shaped object, a ridge along its middle.
Behind and slightly lower and flying right to left is a small, modern military jet. It has been identified as a Harrier, a fighter then in service with the RAF.
It appears to be approaching the object, which looks unlike anything generally seen crossing Scotland's skies.
This is what we know about the photo.
It was taken by two young chefs from a Pitlochry Hotel while walking near Calvine at about 21:00 on 4 August 1990.
According to the account they later gave the MoD's Craig Lindsay, the craft made no sound, left no smoke trails, and appeared to be hovering. They watched as the Harrier flew around it.
The men took six photos of the object before it flew away vertically, disappearing at great speed.
They sent the photos to the Daily Record newspaper, which got in touch with Craig at his office at RAF Pitreavie Castle.
After the paper sent him copies of the photos, he contacted his bosses in London, duly spoke to the men who witnessed the incident, filed the details and moved on.
Interestingly, the newspaper never ran a story, never published the photos. Later that year, while on a routine visit to the MoD in Whitehall, Craig saw a copy of the best photo on display in a room.
"I opened a door and facing me on the wall was a big poster-sized print. I made some remark about 'oh crikey you guys are taking this thing seriously now' and we got talking and they produced prints of the other six," he says.
"After that I waited to see what was going to happen. London said they'd sent it off to the specialists and gradually I forgot about the thing. It just went out of my mind."
Craig came across a reference to the Calvine sighting six years later in Nick Pope's book Open Skies, Closed Minds.
Pope was a civil servant who worked on the MoD's "UFO desk" for three years in the 1990s, analysing reported sightings and assessing whether they posed a threat to national security.
He wrote: "The Calvine report remains one of the most intriguing cases in the Ministry of Defence's files. The conclusions, however, are depressingly familiar: object unexplained, case closed, no further action."
Someone else who read that book was Dr David Clarke. A journalist and academic, he has studied UFO reports for more than three decades and has been instrumental in analysing official records held in the National Archives in Kew.
In 2009, he found a reproduction of the photo in one of the files there. He was keen to know more but it took another 12 years of searching before the trail led him to Craig Lindsay, by then long-retired from the MoD and living quietly in Fife.
As David recounts in a 2022 article revealing the existence of the photo and his search for answers, Craig told him: "I have been for waiting for someone to contact me about this for more than 30 years."
Craig said he had not seen the picture in all that time but after searching through boxes of old papers and books stored in his garage, discovered a full-quality copy of the best image showing the craft and Harrier together.
A photographer colleague of David's at Sheffield Hallam University has analysed the picture and vouches for its authenticity.
2/3
The image shows a real object captured on film. Whatever it is, it was there in the sky. As David sees it, there are a huge number of unanswered questions about the Calvine photo.
The identities of the men who took it remain a secret, nobody knows why the Daily Record never ran the story, no trace has been found of the Harrier or its pilot.
He is determined to find answers.
"I've got my MP involved now, asking questions of John Healey, the Minister of Defence. Saying, you know, you can't just say all we know about this is what's been released to the National Archives," he says.
"That's nonsense. There must be something about it somewhere that's not been released." All around the world, people continue to see strange things in the sky.
The US Congress has held hearings examining multiple reports from military pilots about unexplained encounters.
The big unanswered question about Calvine, the Falkirk Triangle, indeed any reported UFO sighting, is what did they see?
There is no consensus on this. David does not believe in alien visitors. In fact, few people seriously studying the topic think that.
Nor does he buy into some of the other theories put forward for the Calvine photo: that it is a mountain peeking through mist or something reflected on water.
One of the most common explanations given for UFOs for decades now is that they are secret, experimental spy planes.
The 1990s in particular were filled with reports of the US "Aurora" programme, said to be the next generation of very fast stealth aircraft.
Machrihanish air base in Kintyre, with its relatively remote setting and two-mile long runway, was frequently identified as the source of fast objects crossing Scotland's skies, making impossible manoeuvres.
But the US government has never admitted to building such a plane and no evidence links the base to any secret programmes. The MoD closed its UFO desk in 2009 because it "served no defence purpose".
A spokesperson told BBC Scotland News: "The MoD has no opinion on the existence of extra-terrestrial life and no longer investigates reports of sightings of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena or Unidentified Flying Objects.
"This is because, in over 50 years, no such reporting to the department indicated the existence of any military threat to the UK, and it was deemed more valuable to prioritise MoD staff resources towards other defence-related activities."
Malcolm Robinson estimates there are still about 45 to 60 UFO reports in the Falkirk Triangle every year.
He and Billy Buchanan continue to lobby politicians at Westminster and Holyrood for a public inquiry. "There still is phenomena attached to Bonnybridge or why would we go down to see subsequent prime ministers?" Malcolm asks.
"There is something definitely ongoing." David Clarke is determined to find out what was in the skies over Calvine 35 years ago. "It's straightforward. It's either a hoax or a prank that just got out of hand, or it's some kind of military exercise.
There's no other explanation. I don't believe in aliens," he says."And I just want to get to the bottom of it because, as an investigative reporter, I hate mysteries."

The Visionary Letter from Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna to NASA Regarding 3I/ATLAS
Aug 1, 2025
As they spin, comet nuclei often show periodic variations of their brightness over timescales of order hours. Astronomers expect that to apply also to the new interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, since it was classified by the Minor Planet Center as a comet.
The first interstellar object, 1I/`Oumuamua was spinning with a period of about 8 hours, but its spin did not evolve as expected from a comet with its measured non-gravitational acceleration.
Even more paradoxically, deep observations by the Spitzer space telescope did not find carbon-based molecules or dust in a cometary tail around 1I/`Oumuamua.
As in Hans-Christian Andersen’s folktale, this “emperor” had no visible clothes but the astronomers pretending to be the adults in the room insist in a recent paper that 1I/’Oumuamua is a dark comet with invisible clothes.
As of now, there is no spectroscopic evidence for atomic or molecular gas around 3I/ATLAS either (see the papers here, here and here). In addition, data from the new Rubin Observatory on 3I/ATLAS shows no variability on hourly timescales.
Why isn’t the flux from 3I/ATLAS changing periodically? Either 3I/ATLAS is not rotating or the rotation of its nucleus is hidden from view deep inside a thick cloud of dust.
Another interesting fact gleaned from images of 3I/ATLAS is that it has a leading glowing halo rather than a trailing tail. Why is there a glow ahead of 3I/ATLAS? One possible explanation is that the object does not spin and so its dayside is hot and its nightside is cold.
As a result, any ice that accumulated on its surface during its freezing interstellar travel evaporated only at the front of the object facing the Sun. This would mean that the object’s surface is not hidden behind a veil of dust and so its diameter must be 10–20 kilometers to explain its brightness.
This brings back the argument from my published paper that 3I/ATLAS cannot be a 10–20 kilometer rock because the available rocky material in interstellar space can only deliver a 10–20 kilometer rock to the survey volume of the ATLAS survey telescope once per 10,000 years rather than once per 10 years as required.
If 3I/ATLAS is not a 10–20 kilometers rock, then what is the origin of this object?
One way to avoid the mass budget problem is by delivering 3I/ATLAS to the inner solar system through a fine-tuned trajectory. As it turns out, the trajectory of 3I/ATLAS has indeed rare features.
It lines up with the orbital plane of the inner planets (with a likelihood of 0.2%) and comes unusually close to Jupiter, Mars and Venus (with a likelihood of 0.005%). Is 3I/ATLAS alien technology?
This was the title of my second paper on 3I/ATLAS, in collaboration with Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl from the Initiative for Interstellar Studies.
In recent days, I was independently asked by dozens of podcasters and reporters for my opinion on the probability that 3I/ATLAS is an object under intelligent control. I replied that it is difficult to assign a probability to the technological origin.
It is natural to expect 3I/ATLAS to be a comet with a compact nucleus surrounded by a large dust cloud. Yet, 3I/ATLAS follows an exceptionally rare trajectory. And so, the final verdict depends on the significance assigned to the trajectory’s peculiarities.
We will have a better assessment of this probability within a month or two, once 3I/ATLAS gets brighter and easier to observe as it approaches the Sun.
1/2
Given that the NSF-DOE Rubin Observatory is expected to find a new interstellar object every few months in the coming decade, I suggest that the time is ripe to establish a “Loeb scale” for the risk from interstellar objects similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes.
The zero point of that scale would correspond to a verified comet or asteroid of a natural origin and a value of 10 would mean a verified technological object, possibly propelled by an engine which powers artificial lights.
A team of policy experts, in consultation with scientists, will decide how to respond to an alien threat. And a team of psychologists will suggest how to communicate the message to the public without creating panic and a meltdown of world economies.
It is impossible to resolve 3I/ATLAS with telescopes on Earth, but we can get a better look of it with a camera on a spacecraft that gets close to its path. In my latest paper with Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl, I proposed using the Juno spacecraft around Jupiter with this goal in mind.
The Juno mission is currently scheduled to end its life in mid-September 2025. Instead of giving the spacecraft a push towards Jupiter’s atmosphere where it will burn up to ashes, the paper proposes giving it extra scientific life by instructing Juno’s engine to give it a push away from Jupiter — so that by mid-March 2026 it will intercept 3I/ATLAS at its closest approach to Jupiter.
If the available fuel is insufficient for an intercept, even a mild burn of the engine in mid-September 2025 could bring Juno closer to the path of 3I ATLAS by mid-March 2026.
On July 29, 2025, I received a call from a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, the brilliant Anna Paulina Luna, who asked me to brief her about 3I/ATLAS.
At the end of our conversation, she kindly offered to send a letter that encourages the leadership of NASA to use Juno as a probe of 3I/ATLAS.
A close encounter between Juno and 3I/ATLAS will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for human-made technologies to come within a short distance from a large interstellar object.
This could actually happen in 2026 rather than appear in a Hollywood science-fiction script such as Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
The encounter will also be an unprecedented public outreach opportunity for NASA to engage with the viral interest of followers of Joe Rogan and other podcasters in the nature of 3I/ATLAS.
As a token of my appreciation and gratitude for the vision of the Honorable Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, I attach below the letter that she sent to NASA today (also accessible here).
The letter encourages NASA’s leadership to conduct a study of the feasibility of using Juno as a probe of 3I/ATLAS.

I was intimidated, I had surveillance, I had threats’: U.S. Marine who saw craft
Updated: Aug 1, 2025 / 03:07 PM CDT
On “Reality Check,” Ross Coulthart sits down with former U.S. Marine Michael Herrera. In 2009, Herrera was deployed on a relief operation in Sumatra, Indonesia.
During the operation, Herrera says he saw a 300-foot craft, but upon sighting his unit, he was detained by mysterious “men in black.”
Together, they discuss Herrera’s story in depth, the private companies engineering mysterious crafts and Herrera’s dealings with the Senate Intelligence Committee and All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).
