The federal government has accused Piñate and his co-defendants, all executives of “Company 1” of paying more than a million dollars in bribes to Juan Andres Donato Bautista, the Chairman of the Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC). The bribes were “paid to obtain, maintain and receive payments on a lucrative contract to provide voting machines…to the government of the Philippines for its May 2016 national and local elections.” The contract was valued at $182 million.

To support their case, federal prosecutors will introduce “witness testimony, photographs, and text communications” to show that Tibisay Lucena Ramirez, an employee of the Venezuelan National Election Council (CNE), was also paid a bribe for “assistance with Company 1’s status as an election services provider in Venezuela going forward” after Smartmatic pulled out of Venezuela following the country’s 2017 elections. During those elections, alleged fraud was uncovered and Smartmatic pointed the finger at the Maduro regime.

Piñate allegedly gave Lucena Ramirez an upper-middle class home with a pool in Caracas in order to assist with “Company 1’s” status as an election provider in Venezuela. Prosecutors assert that they have text communications between Piñate and others discussing the transfer of the title to Lucena Ramirez through a third party “to conceal the source and nature of the transfer.”

During council debate, Mayor McQuaker remarked, “There’s no flag being flown for the other side of the coin… there’s no flags being flown for the straight people.” The Tribunal’s adjudicator, Karen Dawson, ruled that this comment demonstrated the vote was motivated by discrimination, awarding $5,000 in damages from the mayor and $10,000 from the township to Borderland Pride.

McQuaker and the town’s Chief Administrative Officer were also ordered to complete a “Human Rights 101” course within 30 days. Borderland Pride later obtained an order to garnish the mayor’s bank account to recover the fine plus legal costs.

Spanish police say they’ve dismantled a criminal organization that was providing fake passports to migrants so they could enter Canada.

The operation facilitated mostly Yemeni migrants and involved more than 40 attempts to get into the U.K. or Canada on fake airline tickets and passports, the police said in an Aug. 4 news release.

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with the operation, including the ringleader. The scheme charged migrants the equivalent of $4,700 per person, according to the release.

The investigation started in September 2024 after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) became aware of multiple cases of Yemeni citizens attempting to get into Canada from Spain using fake passports, Spanish police said.

The Epoch Times attempted to contact CBSA but did not hear back by publication time.

Air Canada flight attendants could go on strike as early as Aug. 16 after overwhelmingly voting to authorize their union to strike if it decides to do so.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced the results of the vote to authorize strike action that ran from July 28 to Aug. 5, saying that 99.7 percent of Air Canada flight attendants who are union members voted in favor.

“The company would rather drag their feet than negotiate on the things that matter to our members. Now, flight attendants have had a chance to weigh in and tell the company it’s time to get serious about negotiating,” Air Canada’s CUPE President Wesley Lesosky said in an Aug. 5 statement.

According to the union, negotiations with the airline broke down in July, leading to the vote. According to CUPE’s Air Canada chapter, entry-level flight attendants’ salaries have only gone up by 10 percent in the past 25 years, falling far below inflation, which has gone up around 169 percent in the same time period.

“While the airline continues to slap junk fees on flyers and gouge the public, they’re also exploiting their own employees by severely underpaying flight attendants or refusing to pay them at all for safety-critical aspects of our jobs,” Lesosky said. “Air Canada has raked billions in profits in the past few years. They can afford to pay us fairly without raising costs for the public.”

The average salary for an Air Canada flight attendant ranges from $20–30 per hour, according to Vancouver-based Eton College. Continue…

Calgary police have laid more than 100 charges against 17 individuals, including nine youth, believed to be responsible for dozens of break and enters in that city over the past year.

Police issued a warning in June about an increase in late-night break and enters happening at residential properties between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., noting homeowners were often asleep at the time.

Suspects gained entry to homes by cutting through the screens of unlocked windows or coming through unlocked doors, police said at the time. They would then take vehicle keys and other valuables, such as purses and phones.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) said officers executed three search warrants at homes in Calgary’s southeast as part of the investigation.

Eight adults and nine youth are now facing more than 100 charges in connection to around 45 break and enters in the city. The suspects include Anei Mou, 22, Abdelhamid Daoud, 19, Johnny Vital, 29, Devin Duncan, 43, Olympia Medicine-Traveller, 30, Ruot Lony, 22, Gehan Ali, 18, and Derara Khadir, 19.

The names of the youth suspects were not released under the conditions of the Youth Justice Act. Continue…

Canada’s privacy commissioner has launched an inquiry into a cyberattack against WestJet, during which a “malicious actor” was able to access the airline’s systems.

The airline announced in a statement last month that a “sophisticated, criminal” third party managed to access certain personal and travel-related information during a June cybersecurity breach. WestJet said it had identified all individuals impacted by the breach and would contact them.

The airline said the safety of its airline operations was never threatened but noted that some personal and travel-related data was accessed.

“Given the significant importance of data security to the integrity of our business, we are prepared for incidents of this nature and followed our response planning by taking immediate action to contain the incident and secure our systems,” the company said in a July 18 press release.

“Thanks to our internal precautionary measures, no credit card or debit card numbers and no guest user passwords were obtained.”

The airline noted that the amount of customer information accessed by the hackers “varies from person to person.” Continue…

The U.S. government is out tens of millions of dollars after the bankruptcy of a Canadian electric vehicle company that was awarded nearly US$160 million to build hundreds of electric school buses, the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says.

Lee Zeldin, who was named President Donald Trump’s EPA administrator in January, told Fox News in a recent interview that Quebec vehicle-maker Lion Electric failed to deliver many of the buses it was paid for.

“The Biden administration sent all of the money… They gave all the money up front. Well, guess what? They just declared bankruptcy,” he said referring to Lion Electric’s move to file for bankruptcy protection last December.

Lion Electric received just shy of US$160 million to manufacture hundreds of battery-powered buses for school districts across the United States as part of the previous government’s climate agenda, said Zeldin.

Lion has also received more than $177 million from the Quebec government and $30 million from Ottawa.

Federal documents show that the U.S. government gave Lion Electric US$159 million to manufacture 435 battery-powered buses between October 2022 and May 2024 under the EPA’s US$5 billion Clean School Bus program. Continue…

Canadian firm to make drones for navy's Halifax-class ships: defence department

The federal government has contracted a Canadian firm to outfit the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class ships with a small fleet of aerial drones.

Ottawa announced it has awarded two contracts to MDA Space for up to six advanced “uncrewed aircraft systems” for the Navy’s patrol frigates.

The Department of National Defence says in a news release that this will boost the navy’s long-range maritime surveillance abilities.

The department has earmarked $39 million to acquire the first two drones, with an option of ordering another four.

The initial five-year service contract is estimated to be worth $27 million and its time frame could be extended by the department to 20 years.

The new drone capability is expected to start coming online in 2028 and to be working at full capacity by 2032.
