Montreal police are investigating after a suspect assaulted a 32-year-old man on Aug. 8 afternoon.

Video posted on social media appears to show a religious Jewish man out with young children being beaten repeatedly by a young man who then throws the victim’s yarmulke before walking away from the scene. The video shows the young girl who accompanied the victim helping him to get to his feet after.

A Montreal think tank says the federal government could save $10 billion by reducing 64,000 public service jobs.

The Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) made the recommendation in a pre-budget brief released on Aug. 7. It urges the government to follow the approach of former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, saying his government reduced the civil service by 17 percent over five years.

“Canada’s economy is stagnant, and its fiscal outlook is grim,” said Gabriel Giguère, senior public policy analyst at the MEI. “These are not just numbers on a page; this is debt taken out in our names, adding pressure on families already reeling from recent inflation.”

Ottawa could make a “significant contribution” to balancing the budget if it cut the jobs, MEI said.

It noted that the public service has increased by 38 percent since 2015, adding about 100,000 civil servants to the public payroll.

MEI’s paper recommends Ottawa start by not renewing employee contracts. Continue…

The Hong Kong police’s moves target pro-democracy activists, including those in G7 RRM countries.

Canada and other G7 countries have issued a joint statement condemning the Hong Kong police for issuing arrest warrants and bounties on democracy activists overseas.

Hong Kong law enforcement issued warrants and bounties for 19 individuals living in other countries, including Canada, on July 25. It accused the individuals of planning to undermine Hong Kong and Chinese authorities.

Members of the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism, which include Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the European Union, as well as associate members of the G7 RRM, including Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden issued a joint statement on Aug. 8 saying the move targets those “exercising their freedom of expression.”

The G7 RRM was formed in 2018 to “identify and respond” to foreign threats to democracy, such as “hostile state activity” that targets democratic institutions or processes, according to Global Affairs Canada.

The Hong Kong police’s moves target pro-democracy activists, including those in G7 RRM countries.

“This form of transnational repression undermines national security, state sovereignty, human rights, and the safety of communities,” the joint statement said. Continue…

Trump Admin Imposes Higher Tariffs on Canadian Lumber

The Commerce Department says the higher tariffs offset unfair subsidies, while Canadian officials say the move will fuel inflation.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized its latest review of countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber, more than doubling the rate for most producers in a decision that drew criticism from Canadian officials and industry groups.

The department said in an Aug. 8 release that its latest annual administrative review found that Canadian lumber was “unfairly subsidized” at rates ranging from just over 12 percent to nearly 17 percent.

The department then set the final tariff rate for most Canadian producers—those not individually examined—at 14.63 percent, up from 6.74 percent in the previous review.

The hike comes on top of anti-dumping duties recently raised to 20.56 percent, pushing the combined tariff rate on most Canadian softwood to 35.19 percent. The Commerce Department said U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin collecting at the new rates immediately.

The move drew praise from the U.S. Lumber Coalition, which said that the measures offset the subsidies that Canadian producers receive from their government.

“Canada’s arrogant and abusive unfair trade behavior knows no bounds,” Zoltan van Heyningen, executive director of the U.S. Lumber Coalition, said in a statement. Continue…
