The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday ruled Texas can enforce a law requiring ID numbers for mail-in ballots.

A three-judge panel unanimously overturned a lower court’s block on the state’s mail-in ballot requirements.

The three judges included: Judge James Ho (Trump), Judge Don Willett (Trump), and Judge Patrick Higginbotham (Reagan).

“We have no difficulty concluding that this ID number requirement fully complies with a provision of federal law known by the parties as the materiality provision of the 1964 Civil Rights Act,” the judges ruled.

“The ID number requirement is obviously designed to confirm that each mail-in ballot voter is precisely who he claims he is. And that is plainly “material” to “determining whether such individual is qualified under State law to vote,”” the judges worote.

“The district court reached the opposite conclusion. So we reverse and render judgment for Defendants,” they said.

NASA administrator Sean Duffy, who is also Transportation Secretary, is expected to announce the expedited program this week, according to documents obtained by Politico.

“To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, high power energy generation on Mars, and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative the agency move quickly,” wrote Duffy in a directive issued Thursday.

In that memorandum, Duffy points to a joint Russian-Chinese plan to build a lunar nuclear reactor of their own. In May, the countries signed a memorandum of cooperation by which they will collaborate on a reactor to power the planned International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which they hope to have operational by 2036. Led by the Chinese, but part of a collaboration with many other countries including Venezuela, Belarus, South Africa, Pakistan, Egypt and Kazakhstan, the facility is intended to conduct scientific research within a 62-mile radius of the lunar south pole. Earlier this month, the good folks at the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms stated that it is going to fight the City of Nanaimo, B.C. in court if need be unless this municipality does not end its censorious ways — which the Justice Centre says are completely unconstitutional.

Here's the skinny: last April, Nanaimo amended its bylaws so that members of the public are prohibited from recording city council meetings or even taking photographs.

As well, members of the public are also forbidden to video in any municipal facility without approval. This includes parks and recreational areas!

The bylaws also authorize penalties for violations, including removal from council meetings, fines, and suspensions from accessing city property for up to 18 months.

Rep. James Comer of the House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas to high-ranking Democrat officials on Tuesday over the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Among those subpoenaed are former President Bill Clinton, his wife, former First Lady, former Secretary of State, and former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and others.

"The House Oversight Committee is compelling the following individuals to appear for depositions through issued subpoenas," Comer said, before listing the persons and dates of those depositions:

Former President Bill Clinton: October 14

Former US Attorney General Merrick Garland: October 2

Former FBI Director James Comey: October 7

Former US Attorney General William Barr: August 18

Comer also sent a letter to Pam Bondi, saying "While the Department undertakes efforts to uncover and publicly disclose additional information related to Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell’s cases, it is imperative that Congress conduct oversight of the federal government’s enforcement of sex trafficking laws generally and specifically its handling of the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell."

"The Committee may use the results of this investigation to inform legislative solutions to improve federal efforts to combat sex trafficking and reform the use of non-prosecution agreements and/or plea agreements in sex-crime investigations," Comer said.

This comes after a subcommittee voted to demand, via subpoena, all the files relating to Jeffrey Epstein and to subpoena the officials. This was a bipartisan vote.

The Canadian Armed Forces executed an airdrop of nearly 10,000 kilograms of “life-saving” aid to Palestinians in Gaza on Aug. 4, amid a rapidly worsening crisis in the area, Prime Minister Mark Carney says.

“The humanitarian disaster in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating,” Carney said in an X post. “Canada is intensifying our efforts with international partners to develop a credible peace plan and will ensure aid moves forward at the necessary scale.”

As part of that effort, the military deployed a CC-130J Hercules aircraft over the Gaza Strip to carry out the drop, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Defence Minister David McGuinty said in a statement.

The ministers said “severe challenges” remain in delivering aid to the people of Gaza due to restrictions imposed by the Israeli government. They accused Israel of hindering aid, which constitutes a “violation of international humanitarian law,” adding that humanitarian needs “have reached an unprecedented level.”

The statement echoed similar remarks made by Carney last week when he called the situation in Gaza “intolerable” and accused Israel of violating international law for withholding humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Anand said in an Aug. 4 social media post that she is in contact with her counterpart in Jordan to ensure Canadian aid reaches Palestinians via air and land. Continue…

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is warning of AI-generated advertisements circulating online of himself and others endorsing online investment platforms.

“Those ads are a scam, and the videos of myself and others are nothing short of AI deepfakes,” Moe said in a July 31 video posted on X.

Deepfakes are images, videos, or audio that have been altered or produced through AI to create content that misrepresents an individual’s words or actions.

The premier said there are also videos of “other well-known people,” such as Prime Minister Mark Carney, circulating online that recommend putting money into certain investments.

“And I want you to know that I will never endorse or recommend a particular investment,” Moe said. “So if you see a video or an ad of myself doing that, it’s a fake.”

Moe said that while the government is trying to track down the creators of the AI-generated content, “it can be pretty difficult to prevent these kinds of scams.” Continue…

New legislation that intends to promote safety in public urban spaces by prohibiting street weapons and substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine has come into effect in Saskatchewan.

The Safe Public Spaces Act, also known as the Street Weapons Act, came into effect on Aug. 1, a July 31 news release says.

The legislation allows police to seize and impound street weapons, such as knives, machetes, axes, hammers, and bear spray.

The Act also considers hypodermic needles not used for medical purposes and dangerous drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine to be street weapons.

“The government is committed to increased public safety measures to ensure all Saskatchewan citizens feel safe and protected in their communities,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Tim McLeod said in a July 31 statement.

“The coming-into-force of this Act will empower law enforcement and give them an important tool to appropriately address individuals that use street weapons to intimidate or harm people in public spaces.”

The province is giving municipalities and First Nations the choice to opt into the Act or not, noting that the rules will not apply to those who do not opt in. Continue…

Alberta-based lawyer James Kitchen has been litigating for years. As a self-described libertarian lawyer focused on human rights and individual freedoms, he has taken on cases involving issues such as freedom of expression, Charter challenges, and parental rights.

For him, it has become an increasingly uphill battle. He says that although parental rights are protected by law, Canada’s justice system has become “highly politicized,” creating a gap between legal reality and what the law states on paper.

“In Canada, [parental rights are] being actively undermined and shrunk and weakened by judges who see that as a bad thing,” Kitchen told The Epoch Times in an interview.

Meanwhile, parental rights advocate John Hilton-O’Brien, who serves as executive director of advocacy group Parents for Choice in Education, says not all hope is lost for parents in court.

He is not a lawyer, but his organization has been involved in legal cases, such as the challenge against Saskatchewan’s pronoun policy, which requires schools to obtain parental consent before changing the name and pronouns of children younger than 16. Continue…

New Virus Found in Farmed Pacific Oysters During BC Die-Off, Scientists Say

Researchers based in British Columbia have identified a virus that may pose a threat to farmed Pacific oysters and contributed to the mass mortality event of the species in 2020.

Scientists at the University of British Columbia (UBC) published a report on Aug. 4 detailing their findings after an investigation into the large-scale die-off in the province five years ago.

The researchers gathered 33 oysters from two farms in B.C. that experienced the 2020 die-off, along with 26 wild oysters collected from 10 nearby sites.

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) analysis identified a novel virus—Pacific Oyster Nidovirus 1—in the dead or dying oysters. Yet it was not detected in healthy wild oysters, suggesting a correlation between the virus and mortality.

“This discovery highlights how little we know about viruses infecting invertebrates in general and oysters in particular,” senior author and university professor Dr. Curtis Suttle said in a news release.

Suttle said investigating the mass die-off to identify the disease was crucial for understanding how to better protect Pacific oysters, a major B.C. industry. Pacific oysters are the main shellfish cultivated in the province and had an estimated value of $16 million in 2023. Continue…

Carney’s Key Ministers in Mexico to Talk Trade Ahead of His Visit

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand are visiting Mexico this week in a bid to strengthen ties amid uncertainty in the relationship with the United States.

Champagne and Anand will be in Mexico City on Aug. 5 and 6 to meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and their counterparts to “advance key shared priorities,” such as economic growth, security, and trade, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) said in a release.

The ministers will also meet with a group of Canadian and Mexican business leaders as part of ongoing efforts to “deepen bilateral cooperation and advance shared economic interests.”

Additionally, Anand will participate in a joint meeting of the Committee for North America and the Committee for Foreign Affairs of Mexico’s Senate in an effort to further parliamentary relations between Canada and Mexico.

“This visit will also serve to strengthen bilateral dialogue in anticipation of Prime Minister Carney’s upcoming visit to Mexico,” GAC said. The date of the official visit has not yet been released.

When Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Sheinbaum on June 17 at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alta., they agreed to meet again in Mexico in the coming months. Continue…

Canada Border Services Agency says it has arrested and charged three alleged smugglers after police intercepted a truck carrying 44 foreign nationals in southern Quebec over the weekend.

CBSA says RCMP and Quebec provincial police intercepted the vehicle with dozens of people aboard near Stanstead, Que. overnight between Saturday to Sunday.

The agency says Ogulcan Mersin, 25, and Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, both 31, have been charged with inducing, aiding or abetting someone to commit an offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act as well as assisting people to enter Canada outside of a designated customs office.

CBSA says most of the foreign nationals were transferred to the CBSA’s refugee processing centre in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle where they are subject to immigration examinations.

The agency did not say what happened to the remaining foreign nationals.

The agency says the three suspects will remain detained until their case returns to court on Wednesday.

CBSA says the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be laid.

An off-duty flight attendant who helped passengers escape and suffered her own injuries during a fiery upside-down crash of a Delta Air Lines flight at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport has filed a US$75-million lawsuit against the airline.

The 15-page suit, filed last week in Michigan by Vanessa Miles, claims: “This accident was caused, at least in part, by Defendants knowingly assigning an inexperienced and inadequately trained pilot to operate the flight, demonstrating a reckless disregard for passenger safety in pursuit of operational efficiency.”

It adds that the airline “cut corners on safety by rushing pilots through training programs.”

It goes on to list of number of alleged failures, including “Failure to ensure proper functioning of critical emergency evacuation equipment; Failure to properly train flight crew on emergency evacuation procedures; Absence of any emergency announcements or guidance during evacuation; Failure to properly maintain the aircraft’s landing gear and related systems; Failure to provide prompt medical assistance following the crash; and Failure to have adequate emergency response procedures in place.”

In response to a query from National Post, Delta noted that the captain was hired in 2007 and “has served both as an active duty Captain and in pilot training and flight safety capacities. Assertions that he failed training events are false. Assertions that he failed to flow into a pilot position at Delta Air Lines due to training failures are also false.” Continue…
