In the Netflix series GOLIATH, Billy Bob Thornton takes on the Pharmaceutical industry, He is an attny, who 20 years ago looked into a Big Pharma medicine for the Rx company. As a result, 20 years in the future, he is not allowed to go to court against the Pharma Co becuase he once represented them 20 years in the past. (Even tho he has had nothing to do with them since then.) In the show, he explained that Many Pharma companies do this (ask a legal outfit) to look over some paperwork, so that in the future they are not allowed to file against them (for any reason). This blocks all the Big Firms from fighting Big Pharma.
If you have not watche GOLIATH (NETFLIX), it's well worth the watch. Many Easter Eggs in there about how Govt/Legal/Dirty tricks really work. Great series.
This is the purpose for all of these retainers in WDC: so these Big Firms cannot be utilized.
