Very Interesting that No One seems to link the new American Eagle Ad Campaign, to that of the first one, to push the "Sex Sells" Campaign Mainstream.

Calvin Klein pushed the brand over the edge of innocent to down right disgusting. Brooke Shields was, from all appearances, an obsession of his at one point. Who really hit the scene in selling "acceptable child porn" in the film Blue Lagoon. Islands, children, sex.

Here Klein represented class, the taboo subject. The insolent, indifferent kids of the August campaign parallel the young people of Larry Clark’s photographs and recent film “Kids.”Klein was not concocting a dream in utopian physique or sun-drenched paradise. He led us away from fashion grandeur to trailer-park trash, the rude and surly kids of their own abject world. No one may admit that there is class, much less a lower class, in supposedly classless America. Who is staying home watching trash television? The tacky faux-wood paneling shows us the tawdry world of lower-class kids in America today.

Extortion Reboot: Ransomware Crew Threatens Leak to Snowden

Though the group initially stuck to classic ransomware TTPs before demanding the ransom, it went off script when it began threatening the group and detailing potential consequences the victim would face.

A threat group known as Ox Thief recently tried to entice its victim to pay to protect its data by threatening to go to Edward Snowden — a former NSA intelligence contractor who became a whistleblower when he leaked classified documents about global surveillance programs in 2013.

Ox Thief didn't begin with this tactic, however. According to analysis from Fortra, first the threat actor claimed on its Tor-based site to have stolen 47GB of sensitive files from an organization. It offered samples of the stolen data so that the victim could verify that the group's claims were legitimate, before threatening to publish the data if the victim didn't pay the demanded ransom — all of which are classic ransomware extortion tactics.

But things began to go awry when the threat actor started posting about the consequences that the victim would have to deal with if the ransom wasn't paid. This included jail time for data leak liability, fines, class-action lawsuits, reputational damage, and incident-response costs.

It also threatened to contact journalist Brian Krebs, HaveIBeenPwned's Troy Hunt, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the European Center for Digital Rights' privacy group NOYB, and then, finally, Edward Snowden, who is now a naturalized Russian citizen, if the ransom demand wasn't met.

The move could shed light on the crew's possible desperation and need for funds.

"By explicitly outlining potential fines, class action lawsuits, and government penalties," said Nick Oram, Fortra's domain and Dark Web monitoring services senior manager, "the group is attempting to reframe the cost-benefit analysis of paying versus resisting extortion."

Coast Guard releases final report on deadly Titan submersible implosion

The U.S. Coast Guard has released its final report on the catastrophic implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible, which killed five people on a deep-sea voyage to the Titanic wreckage in June 2023, criticizing the company's CEO, Stockton Rush, and singling him out as a major reason for the disaster.

The 335-page report, released Tuesday, comes nearly a year after the Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation held a two-week hearing into the unprecedented implosion of the experimental vessel.

Rush was warned repeatedly about how dangerous his submersible was and not only ignored all the warnings, but threatened anyone who raised concerns, according to the report released Tuesday. Many who spoke up were threatened with lawsuits or termination, it said.

"A false sense of safety and security was created by Mr. Rush through his misrepresentation of the TITAN's safety, achieved by falsely claiming substantial safety margins, misleading mission specialists regarding testing procedures, and exaggerating the number of hull test dives for the final TITAN hull,” the report says.

The board heard from more than two dozen witnesses during its September 2024 hearing. They included several former employees of OceanGate, whose co-founder, Rush, was among those killed.

The main purpose of the hearing was to uncover the facts related to the implosion including the submersible's design, operation and safety protocols to help determine the cause of the incident and make recommendations to prevent similar casualties. The board also set out to determine if there was any evidence of misconduct, negligence or violations by anyone licensed or certified.

The report also singles out OceanGate's "inadequate design, certification, maintenance and inspection process for the Titan," as was often highlighted during the board hearing last year.

“OceanGate’s toxic safety culture, corporate structure, and operational practices were critically flawed and at the core of these failures were glaring disparities between their written safety protocols and their actual practices,” the report says.

Ahead of the report's release, the Coast Guard said in June that its Marine Board of Investigation was in the "final portion of its analysis phase" as part of its over two-year probe, and that the report would come out once the commandant’s review was completed.

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating the implosion and will make its own determination as to the probable cause. That investigation is ongoing.

In addition to Rush, those killed in the June 2023 implosion included French explorer and Titanic expert Paul Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman.

The submersible company suspended all exploration and commercial operations after the deadly implosion.

The Coast Guard's hearing last year revealed one of the last messages sent from Titan to the surface vessel Polar Prince as the doomed submersible descended toward the ocean floor.

The short text messages were the only means of communication between the Titan crew and the personnel on the Polar Prince as the vessel attempted to reach the Titanic, which sits 3,800 meters below sea level.

House committee issues subpoenas for Epstein files and depositions with the Clintons

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department on Tuesday for files in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation and is seeking depositions with the Clintons and former law enforcement officials, part of a congressional probe that lawmakers believe may show links to President Donald Trump and former top officials.

The Republican-controlled committee issued subpoenas for depositions with former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and eight former top law enforcement officials.

The committee’s actions showed how even with lawmakers away from Washington on a monthlong break, interest in the Epstein files is still running high. Donald Trump has denied prior knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and claimed he cut off their relationship long ago, and he has repeatedly tried to move past the Justice Department’s decision not to release a full accounting of the investigation. But lawmakers from both major political parties, as well as many in the Republican president’s political base, have refused to let it go.

Rep. James Comer, the Republican chairman of the oversight committee, noted in letters to Attorney General Pam Bondi and the former officials that the cases of Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell “have received immense public interest and scrutiny.”

“While the Department undertakes efforts to uncover and publicly disclose additional information related to Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell’s cases, it is imperative that Congress conduct oversight of the federal government’s enforcement of sex trafficking laws generally and specifically its handling of the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell,” Comer said.

Since Epstein’s 2019 death in a New York jail cell as he awaited trial for sex trafficking charges, conservative conspiracists have stoked theories about what information investigators gathered on Epstein — and who else could have been involved. Republican lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee nodded to that line of questioning last month by initiating the subpoenas for the Clintons, both Democrats, as well as demanding all communications between President Joe Biden's Democratic administration and the Justice Department regarding Epstein.

The committee is also demanding interviews under oath from former attorneys general spanning the last three presidential administrations: Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder and Alberto Gonzales. Lawmakers also subpoenaed former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller.

However, it was Democrats who sparked the move to subpoena the Justice Department for its files on Epstein. They were joined by some Republicans last month to successfully initiate the subpoena through a subcommittee of the House Oversight Committee.

“Today was an important step forward in our fight for transparency regarding the Epstein files and our dedication to seeking justice for the victims," said Democratic Reps. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the committee, and Summer Lee, who initiated the subpoena, in a joint statement. “Now, we must continue putting pressure on the Department of Justice until we actually receive every document.”

The subpoenas give the Justice Department until Aug. 19 to hand over the requested records, though such records requests are typically open to negotiation. The committee is also asking the former officials to appear for the depositions throughout August, September and October, concluding with Hillary Clinton on Oct. 9 and Bill Clinton on Oct. 14.

While several former presidents, including Trump, have faced congressional subpoenas, none has ever appeared before lawmakers under compulsion.
