Bolsonaro placed under house arrest

The US State Department has condemned a Brazilian Supreme Court order for the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial over an alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order Monday, saying Bolsonaro had failed to comply with restrictions previously imposed on him by the court, including use of social media and cell phones.

The court decision comes at a time of tense relations between Washington and Brasilia, with the case against right-wing populist Bolsonaro being seized on by US President Donald Trump as a threat in trade negotiations.

On Monday, the US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs accused Justice Moraes of using “Brazil’s institutions to silence opposition and threaten democracy,” in a post on X.

“Putting even more restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro’s ability to defend himself in public is not a public service. Let Bolsonaro speak!,” said the post.

“The United States condemns Moraes’ order imposing house arrest on Bolsonaro and will hold accountable all those aiding and abetting sanctioned conduct,” it added.

The court order said Bolsonaro recorded speeches to be posted on other users’ social media accounts in which his ankle monitor is visible, which Moraes said defied an order prohibiting “exploitation of interviews or public or private speeches posted on third parties’ social media.”

Bolsonaro will serve house arrest at his residence and will not be allowed to have visitors, except for his attorneys and people authorized by the court. The former president is also prohibited from using a cell phone, directly or through third parties.

Bolsonaro’s eldest son Senator Flavio Bolsonaro also criticized the court’s decision, saying on CNN Brasil that his father had never defied a court order.

“We are officially in a dictatorship. This is a sad page in the history of Brazil,” he said.

In February, Jair Bolsonaro was charged in connection with an alleged coup plot to overturn the results of the 2022 election and keep his opponent, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from taking power. Part of the coup plot, prosecutors allege, involved a plan to potentially assassinate Lula, his vice president and a minister of the Supreme Court.

Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing.

Trump, an ally of Bolsonaro, has criticized the trial against the former Brazilian president, calling it “politically motivated,” something authorities in Brazil have rejected. Last week, he signed executive actions imposing a 50% tariff on Brazil, after threatening to do so if the country did not end the trial against Bolsonaro.

The US has also sanctioned Justice Moraes for what it considers “serious human rights violations,” and announced visa restrictions against him and other court officials over Bolsonaro’s trial.

Bolsonaro’s supporters and some on Brazil’s right have welcomed Trump’s proactive interest in the case. But the current administration in Brasilia, and many others in Latin American nation, see it as the US directly meddling in its affairs.

President Lula last week slammed the US for imposing the tariff on Brazilian exports and for sanctioning the Supreme Court justice. He accused the American government of interfering in Brazil’s justice system, a move he called “unacceptable.”

Karen Bass Raked In Cash From Chinese Intel-Tied Bankers Before Appointing Them As Advisors

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ transition advisory team enlisted two Chinese intelligence-tied bankers who have fundraised for her and a nonprofit she helps lead, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation discovered.

Bass appointed Dominic Ng, CEO of East West Bank, and Simon Pang, co-founder of Royal Business Bank, to her mayoral transition advisory team in December 2022, according to the City of Los Angeles. In total, Ng, East West Bank and Pang have donated upwards of $1 million to Bass’ mayoral campaign and the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles, where Bass serves as an advisor to the board of directors, according to the nonprofit.

While it is unclear what Ng and Pang did while serving on Bass’ mayoral transition advisory team, both have extensive ties to the Chinese government and have also been listed as holding positions within arms of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence and intelligence service called the United Front Work Department (UFWD).

Bass’ office did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Pang could not be reached for comment. A Royal Business Bank spokesperson declined to comment.

An East West Bank spokesperson acknowledged that Ng had previously participated in two Chinese government organizations, but denied his involvement in a third, when the DCNF asked about several Chinese government entities identifying him as a member.

“I absolutely believe that anyone holding a United Front position and then landing a spot on a mayor’s transition team is a huge red flag,” Sam Cooper, a Canadian investigative reporter and author of “Wilful Blindness: How A Network Of Narcos, Tycoons And CCP Agents Infiltrated The West,” told the DCNF. “In fact, they’re often placed on these teams as a reward for channeling significant donations.”

“When donors connected to United Front groups have significant wealth and show up constantly around politicians, they’re there for a reason,” Cooper said.

The Bass administration’s Chinese government-ties have come under increased scrutiny from media outlets and China experts, like Gordon Chang, following a June 2025 DCNF investigation revealing Bass appointed the son of a Democratic fundraiser and CCP intelligence arm official to serve as the city’s liaison for Asian-Americans and director of commission appointments.

“Los Angeles is now a wide-open city for China’s communists,” Chang, author of “Plan Red: China’s Project To Destroy America,” told the DCNF. “Angelenos can thank the CCP sympathizer-in-chief, Karen Bass. Karen Bass resists federal agents and welcomes China’s communists. It’s very clear where her sympathies lie.”

Bass’ congressional and mayoral campaigns as well as the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles have received as much as $33,000 from Pang, who has been identified as an official by a UFWD affiliate tasked with co-opting U.S. lawmakers.

Pang donated $3,800 to Bass’ congressional campaign between 2019 and 2020, and has contributed $4,700 to Bass’ mayoral campaign since 2021, according to Federal Election Commission and Los Angeles Ethics Commission filings.

Pang has reportedly held multiple positions with the Chinese government, such as serving as the “Southern California coordinator” for the Chinese People’s Association For Friendship With Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), according to the Burbank, California government website.

CPAFFC is a United Front affiliate, according to an October 2020 U.S. State Department announcement, which designated the Beijing-based organization as a “foreign mission.” The Chinese government tasks CPAFFC with influencing foreign leaders in order to promote China’s agenda, the announcement states. Among other things, CPAFFC allegedly leveraged its influence to pressure lawmakers in Irvine, California to sever ties with Taiwan’s government in 2006, according to the U.S. Director of National Intelligence.

“[T]he United Front is the CCP’s first ‘magic weapon’ to defeat adversaries,” Jacqueline Deal, an advisory board member at State Armor, a nonprofit focused on countering the CCP, told the DCNF. “This weapon infiltrates adversaries to subvert them from within — so CCP agents are tasked with operating inside our society to at once promote the party’s interests and degrade the U.S. political system, economy and national security.”

The website for the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles states that it has received between $5,000 and $24,999 from Pang during Bass’ tenure as mayor. Established in 2014, the fund is the brainchild of Bass’ predecessor, former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, according to the nonprofit. The fund sparked concerns of ethical violations and corruption during Garcetti’s tenure for allegedly allowing the mayor to solicit contributions outside the bounds of campaign finance laws, The Los Angeles Times reported in 2015.

CPAFFC’s former chairwoman, Li Xiaolin, awarded Pang — whose Chinese name is Feng Zhenfa — the honorary title of “Sino-U.S. Friendship Envoy” in 2019 for his contribution to the development of friendship between American and Chinese people, according to a DCNF translation of a Chinese government announcement.

One photo accompanying that announcement shows Pang wearing a “Mao suit” alongside CPAFFC’s chairwoman within Beijing’s Great Hall of the People during a Chinese government reception celebrating the communist nation’s 70th anniversary.

CPAFFC’s subsequent chairman, Lin Songtian, appointed Pang to serve as an “overseas honorary director” of CPAFFC’s Shanghai branch in February 2023, according to a DCNF translation of a CPAFFC announcement, which includes a photo showing Lin handing Pang a framed document.

The Chinese government also entrusts CPAFFC with developing sister-city relationships between China and foreign localities, and “may exploit these pacts to press its agendas,” according to a report published by the Director of National Intelligence in July 2022.

By December 2019, Pang and a nonprofit he heads, called the U.S.-Sino Friendship Association, had already led nine delegations of U.S. lawmakers to China to meet with CPAFFC officials, and continued to take lawmakers to China until at least 2023, Chinese government announcements indicate. In one instance, Pang helped bring 21 mayors to meet with CPAFFC officials in Hubei Province in May 2014, Chinese state media reported. The majority of those lawmakers have been Democratic Party politicians, according to a DCNF review.

Although there is no evidence Bass participated in any of Pang’s China delegations, Pang connected Bass with Chinese-American donors when she ran for mayor.

In July 2022, Pang arranged for Bass to meet with Chinese-American entrepreneurs in California, where they discussed crime, homelessness and business, according to Chinese-language news outlet UNECNE. Five of the 10 attendees identified ultimately donated to Bass’ mayoral campaign, Los Angeles Ethics Commission records show.

Bass and the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles have also received upwards of $1 million from East West Bank and Ng, who has been identified as an official by three Chinese government organizations.

Ng contributed $1,500 to Bass’ mayoral campaign in April 2022, according to the Los Angeles Ethics Commission, and the East West Bank Foundation has donated between $100,000 and $999,999 to the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles during the current reporting period, the nonprofit’s website states.

“East West is deeply committed to the well-being of the communities it serves, and the bank has supported the Mayor’s Fund under multiple administrations — even prior to Mayor Bass’ tenure,” an East West Bank spokeswoman told the DCNF.

A spokesperson for the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles told the DCNF that East West Bank Foundation’s contributions helped support Bass’ “mission to end homelessness,” but did not respond to questions about Ng or Pang’s Chinese government-ties or the fund’s vetting process for donors.

In February 2023, the American Banker published an East West Bank statement alleging that Ng had served at an “executive-director level” in an “honorary position” at the China Overseas Exchange Association (COEA), and had been invited, but declined to join the China Overseas Friendship Association (COFA), after the DCNF reported that both organizations listed him as an official that month.

A Chinese government announcement reveals that the UFWD controlled COEA in its final years until 2019, when COEA was subsumed by COFA, which is a UFWD organization, according to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), a legislative commission created by Congress to investigate the national security implications of the relationship between the U.S. and China.

In March 2015, Chinese government and state media reports revealed Ng also attended the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), whose delegates “serve as proxies for CCP interests,” according to USCC.

“Mr. Ng attended a ceremonial session of the [CPPCC] in March 2015 as a non-official, non-voting guest observer. He had been invited in his capacity as then-chairman of the Committee of 100 (C100),” the East West Bank spokeswoman said. “Although the invitation was extended while he was still C100 chairman, due to scheduling constraints, he attended the session after his term had concluded in 2014.”

While C100 claims merely to seek “constructive dialogue and relationships” between the U.S. and China, the nonprofit has been repeatedly accused of promoting CCP interests, and its members have included numerous individuals listed by the Chinese government and United Front as officials, the DCNF previously reported. One joint report published by the Hoover Institution and Asia Society — where Ng served as a board member— alleges that the Chinese Consulate tasks C100 with co-opting prominent Chinese-Americans.

“Mr. Ng had no knowledge of any involvement by the [UFWD] during his interactions, and, to this day, has not knowingly engaged with UFWD representatives,” East West Bank’s spokeswoman said.

During his tenure as C100’s chairman between May 2011 and April 2014, Ng interacted with individuals affiliated with UFWD arms, such as during a November 2013 C100 delegation he led to Beijing to meet with Chinese government officials, including the CPPCC’s deputy chairman, Han Qide, who was then also a CPAFFC advisor, according to a DCNF translation of Chinese government reports.

In addition to their connection through the City of Los Angeles and the Mayor’s Fund For Los Angeles, Bass and Ng have also attended several events together in 2025.

Most recently, Bass “delivered a tribute” to Ng in June 2025 during an event held by a nonprofit called the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation (LAPRF), where East West Bank’s senior vice president serves as a director. During the event, LAPRF gave Ng the “Twice a Citizen” award for his “dedicated service to the LA community,” according to an East West Bank announcement.

“The bottom line is this: donations from United Front-linked actors are part of Xi’s strategy to embed the CCP inside democratic systems,” Cooper said. “The ultimate goal is to build such deep financial and political leverage that they can demand their preferred candidates rise within government ranks.”

Trump says JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America rejected him as a customer

-President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the two largest U.S. banks previously rejected him as a customer, reviving claims that conservative clients were being unfairly denied accounts.

-Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in a wide-ranging interview that JPMorgan Chase informed him he had 20 days to move “hundreds of millions of dollars in cash” to another bank.

-The president then said he approached Bank of America to “deposit a billion dollars-plus” and was told the bank couldn’t provide him an account, Trump said.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the two largest American banks previously rejected him as a customer, reviving claims that conservative clients were being unfairly denied accounts.

Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in a wide-ranging interview that JPMorgan Chase informed him he had 20 days to move “hundreds of millions of dollars in cash” to another bank. He didn’t say when this happened.

The president said he then approached Bank of America

to “deposit a billion dollars-plus” and was told the bank couldn’t provide him an account, Trump said.

″[Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan] said, ‘We can’t do it,’” Trump said. “So I went to another one, another one, another one. I ended up going to small banks all over the place. I mean, I was putting $10 million here, $10 million there.”

Shares of the two banks dipped more than 1% in afternoon trading.

Some conservatives, crypto executives and religious organizations have claimed to be unfairly “de-banked” by large U.S. financial institutions. Banks generally deny rejecting clientele based on political or religious beliefs, but say they are required to comply with federal laws aimed at preventing financial crimes, including the 1970 Bank Secrecy Act, and have faced regulatory pressure related to crypto and other industries that are considered higher risk for money laundering or fraud.

The topic came up again in January, when Trump accused Moynihan of denying services to conservative customers.

The issue puts banks in a bind; the companies risk further angering the president as he airs grievances that resonate with his supporters. At the same time, banks have been a major beneficiary of the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back Biden-era regulatory rules across a wide swath of financial activities.

The Trump administration is preparing an executive order that threatens the industry with fines if they drop customers on political grounds, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. A draft version of the order asks regulators to investigate whether banks violated laws, according to the Journal.

A trade group for big banks said that “regulatory overreach” was the root cause of the de-banking problem.

“Banking agencies have already taken steps to address issues like reputational risk, and we’re hopeful that any forthcoming executive order will reinforce this progress by directing regulators to confront the flawed regulatory framework that gave rise to these concerns,” the Bank Policy Institute told CNBC.

While Trump on Tuesday mentioned his business, likely referring to his real estate and hospitality conglomerate, it wasn’t clear if the events he described were in reference to personal or business accounts, or both.

Trump said that he believes banks rejected him and his supporters because regulators during the Biden administration applied pressure to the companies.

In a March lawsuit filed against Capital One, the president’s company alleged that the bank improperly closed more than 300 accounts a few months after the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. The bank denied the accusations.

JPMorgan denied targeting conservatives or Trump supporters for de-banking.

“We don’t close accounts for political reasons, and we agree with President Trump that regulatory change is desperately needed,” a JPMorgan spokeswoman said Tuesday. “We commend the White House for addressing this issue and look forward to working with them to get this right.”

In a broadcast interview later Tuesday, Moynihan told CNBC that Trump was “after the right thing” in terms of criticizing an industry that is beholden to a web of regulations.

“We bank everybody, but the reality is, we want to make sure that the rules and regulations don’t cause decisions we make that then are looked at in the aftermath” and questioned, Moynihan said.

Disney’s ESPN to acquire NFL media assets in major deal

Walt Disney

’s ESPN has reached a landmark deal with the National Football League to acquire NFL Network and other media assets from the league in exchange for the NFL taking a 10% equity stake in the sports network, the parties said on Tuesday.

The deal, which ESPN said would bolster the offerings on its upcoming ESPN streaming service, is subject to regulatory approval. Financial terms were not disclosed.

ESPN also will acquire NFL Fantasy, a digital offering, and will gain the rights to distribute the NFL RedZone television channel to its cable and satellite television customers.

“Today’s announcement paves the way for the world’s leading sports media brand and America’s most popular sport to deliver an even more compelling experience for NFL fans, in a way that only ESPN and Disney can,” Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.

The Athletic, which first reported last week that a deal was imminent, said it could potentially be worth billions of dollars, according to sources. ESPN declined to comment on the reported figure.

The ESPN streaming service, which Iger has said could launch as early as this month, will cost $29.99 per month.

It will provide access to ESPN’s portfolio of professional and college sports, including the NFL, the NBA and WNBA, MLB and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, as well as studio shows such as “SportsCenter” and “Pardon the Interruption.”

“By combining these NFL media assets with ESPN’s reach and innovation, we’re creating a premier destination for football fans,” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement.

The league launched the NFL Network in 2003, as it sought to tap into the revenue generated by cable and satellite subscriptions. While it gained traction, introducing Thursday Night Football, it never rose to become a rival to ESPN.

Under the new agreement, ESPN would own and operate the TV and streaming rights to the NFL Network, which will continue to carry seven games a year.

“The network’s sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

RedZone is a service that allows fans to watch scoring opportunities during Sunday afternoon NFL games.

The league will continue to own, operate, and produce NFL RedZone and retain rights to distribute it digitally. The league also will retain ownership of certain media properties, such as NFL Films, and platforms such as the NFL Podcast Network and NFL+.

Indian components found in Russian drones used for Putin’s war, Ukraine claims

Indian-made components have been discovered in Russian drones used for deadly attacks on Ukraine, one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s top officials has claimed.

The Iranian-made Shahed drones containing Indian parts have been involved in attacks along the frontlines and against civilians, Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram.

He called on the world to “deprive Russians of the ability to receive components from other countries and stop the killing of Ukrainians,” according to Kyiv-based Ukrainian news agency UNN.

“Also, buying Russian energy resources is financing the war, which does not contribute to peace,” Yermak added.

The White House and National Security Council didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.

The drone development comes as President Trump has threatened to slap new tariffs on India if it does not stop purchasing Russian oil.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday.

Trump added on Friday that he was also seeking to impose new sanctions on Russia and any country that purchases its energy exports like crude oil and electricity.

India, as the third-biggest oil importer and consumer in the world, has a high demand and draws one-third of its supply from Russia.

A source from the Indian government noted that its purchases have helped balance global oil prices by easing the pressure on supplies from other regions.

The relatively inexpensive Shahed drones that included the Indian-made components have become a crucial part of Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine since late 2022.

Iran initially supplied 2,000 fully assembled drones to Russia, which soon established its own assembly system using Iranian ready-made components, according to Ukraine’s Security Service.

That number was quickly escalated, with more than 6,000 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia last month alone, according to figures from the Ukrainian air force.

Passengers find cockroach infestation on Air India flight

A recent Air India flight had some unexpected passengers onboard: cockroaches.

"On flight AI180 from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata, two passengers were unfortunately bothered by the presence of a few small cockroaches on board," a spokesperson for the airline told USA TODAY in a statement. They notified a crew member who relocated them to different seats, where they were "comfortable thereafter," the airline continued.

During the scheduled fuel stop at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, the aircraft was deep cleaned by the ground crew to address the issue and continued its journey to Mumbai as scheduled.

"Despite our regular fumigation efforts, insects can sometimes enter an aircraft during ground operations," the airline added. "Air India will be undertaking a comprehensive investigation to determine the source and the cause of this incident and implement measures to prevent recurrence. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to the passengers."

This isn't the first time a cockroach has made an appearance on an Air India flight. In 2019, a passenger said he found a dead bug in the in-flight meal he was served.

Earlier this summer, a TikTok went viral after a Spirit Airlines passenger shared her experience of finding cockroaches crawling around on the bulkhead near her seat. She said she told the flight attendants, who didn't help, and the airline ended up offering her a voucher.
