Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has come under renewed ethics scrutiny after a July 2025 report revealed she labeled her fiancé, Riley Roberts, as her “spouse” to secure access to high-profile perks like a $250 ticket to the 2021 Met Gala—while simultaneously avoiding federal financial disclosure requirements by claiming he was not her spouse.

 

The House Ethics Committee concluded that Ocasio-Cortez used the spousal designation when it benefited her, allowing Roberts to attend the exclusive event for free under House gift rules that only apply to legal spouses. However, in her financial disclosures to Congress, AOC did not identify Roberts as her spouse, thereby avoiding the legal obligation to publicly disclose his income, assets, stock trades, and business interests. This inconsistency drew sharp criticism from both watchdog groups and lawmakers, who accused the congresswoman of selectively applying the rules for personal gain.

 

In addition to the ticket issue, the committee noted that AOC delayed payments on several items and services tied to her appearance at the Met Gala, including her now-infamous “Tax the Rich” dress. She has since agreed to reimburse vendors approximately $3,724 and pay the full ticket value of $250. The investigation, which had been ongoing since early 2023, has been closed after her full cooperation and payment commitments.

 

Critics argue that the incident undercuts her public stance on transparency and ethics in government. AOC has been a vocal advocate for banning members of Congress—and their spouses—from trading stocks, positioning herself as a champion for accountability. Yet this case has led some to question whether she used a legal gray area to avoid the very rules she promotes for others.

 

While no formal disciplinary action has been recommended at this time, the Ethics Committee’s findings have raised broader concerns about how congressional gift rules and financial disclosure requirements are enforced—and whether some members of Congress are able to exploit the system for personal convenience.
