EU Banana Regulations
The European Union's specifications for bananas were established by Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2257/94, which took effect on 1 January 1995 and was later replaced by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1333/2011 on 9 January 2012.
The regulation applies to unripened green bananas and primarily concerns growers and wholesalers, not retailers.
It mandates that bananas must be green and unripened, firm and intact, fit for human consumption, not affected by rotting, clean, free of pests and damage from pests, free from deformation or abnormal curvature, free from bruising, and free of any foreign smell or taste.
The regulation specifies minimum size requirements, with a length of at least 14 cm and a thickness (grade) of 2.7 cm, although exceptions exist for bananas from certain regions where smaller sizes are traditional.
It also establishes quality classifications: Extra, Class I, and Class II. Only Extra class bananas must comply fully with shape specifications, being free from any malformation or abnormal curvature.
Class I bananas are permitted slight defects of shape, while Class II bananas are allowed full defects of shape.
The regulation does not ban curved bananas; instead, it requires them to be free from "abnormal curvature".
The rule has been frequently misrepresented in media and political discourse as a ban on "bendy bananas," a claim often cited as an example of an "Euromyth".
The original regulation was repealed in 2012, but its core quality standards, including the shape and size requirements, were carried forward into the new regulation.
A 2008 proposal to reform regulations related to fruit and vegetable quality standards, including those for bananas, was discussed, but it did not specifically target the banana shape rules.
The European Commission stated that it was unnecessary for the EU to regulate such matters, advocating for market operators to decide.
not just western government.
here is what anons research shows including others research put togather to get a fuller picture.
