Hoover City Schools launch new automotive academy at RC3
HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) - Students in Hoover now have the opportunity to turn their interest in cars into a career. Hoover City Schools officially unveiled a brand new Automotive Academy at the Riverchase Career Connection Center (RC3), just in time for the start of the school year.
The new program is the latest addition to RC3’s growing list of academies, which are designed to prepare students for work, college, and life after graduation.
This has been years in the making, and now it’s finally here.
Students will get hands-on experience and classroom instruction as they train to become certified automotive technicians, a skillset instructors say is in high demand.
RC3 Coordinator Cedric McCarroll said the program was developed in response to workforce data showing a shortage of qualified automotive workers in the area.
“Well, one of the things we do is look at workforce trend data, and we notice that there is a shortage of automotive workers in this area,” McCarroll said.
To help meet that demand, Hoover City Schools created a program that blends practical skills and academic training.
“If you’re into computers or electronics, this is the career field for you,” said instructor Thaddeus Oliver. “Today’s cars are highly technical.”
Students won’t just learn from textbooks - they’ll get under the hood.
The curriculum combines traditional instruction with hands-on automotive training, preparing students for real-world jobs in a rapidly evolving industry.
“There’s absolutely no part of a car that’s not electronic,” said instructor Ricky Newton. “With the EV market growing, students really need that strong background in electricity and electronics.”
The district says students will also benefit from strong ties to local businesses and dealerships, which are eager to hire qualified graduates.
“There’s a great need for automotive technicians across the United States, not just in Hoover,” Newton added. “Our goal is to help change that.”
Both Oliver and Newton bring years of real-world experience to the classroom and they’re excited to help guide students into meaningful careers.
“Working in the automotive field is not just greasy work,” Oliver said. “It’s a real career path. They’ll clock in, wear uniforms—it’s going to feel like a real job because we’re preparing them for one.”
Enrollment in the program is open to 10th through 12th grade students at Hoover and Spain Park high schools. To qualify, students must meet academic requirements, including a strong GPA.
The academy officially launches Thursday, August 7, with 43 students enrolled. School leaders hope to expand to nearly 90 students next year.
