I remember seeing whole neighborhoods that were abandoned. I wondered about how there could be so many people when so much of it was a waste land.
It occured to me then, and previous to that: what is welfare recipients are counted for a census but don't actually exist.
what if an appartment block is counted with thousands of people, all of whom show up on welfare, but there are only a few hundred?
in a city like Los Angeles who would really be able to tell if the commerce department, the post office, and the city were in collusion (not really that far fetched.
I envisioned an empty appartment building with hundreds of listed residents and all of them collecting 'housing assistence' and welfare, food stamps (EBT) but actually no one there at all.
the local schools would get more funding.
the highways would be better funded.
someone would vote all the 'adults'.
and then when I heard about 300,000 children missing I thought (recently) 'what if the same children were brought back and forth so that one slave-child would be counted 20 or 30 times? someone would collect 20 or 30 times the welfare, cities would get 20 or 30 times the federal funding.
I guess it all stemmed from one day that Market Basket when a Russian woman had a deck of EBT cards and was buying a very lot of expensive groceries. I didn't even say anything but just looked at it with curiousity and she insisted that it was the woman for whom she was a maid who had the EBT card that she was about to use.
my thought: if she's a maid why does she need an EBT card, she's got a job. If a wealthy woman from a rich town (with snob zoning and 4 acre house lots) needs an EBT card, I don't understand it.
