History of Armenia and Azerbaijan
The long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, primarily over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, has seen a significant shift in recent months, with both nations agreeing on the text of a draft peace agreement in March 2025, although progress has been slow since then.
As of August 2025, the two leaders are preparing to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House to advance the peace process, marking a potential turning point after decades of war and tension.
Historical Roots and Soviet Era: The conflict's origins lie in the Soviet period, when Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnically Armenian-majority region within the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, was established as an autonomous oblast in 1923.
Tensions simmered for decades, and in 1988, the region's legislature voted to join Armenia, sparking the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.
First and Second Karabakh Wars: The First Karabakh War (1988-1994) resulted in approximately 30,000 casualties and led to Armenian forces gaining control of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding Azerbaijani territories.
A ceasefire was brokered by Russia in 1994, leaving the region de facto independent but dependent on Armenia.
The Second Karabakh War in 2020 lasted 44 days, ending with a decisive Azerbaijani victory that reclaimed the seven surrounding districts and a third of Nagorno-Karabakh itself.
Recent Escalation and Peace Efforts: Following the 2020 war, a blockade of the Lachin corridor, the vital lifeline to Armenia, began in December 2022, causing severe shortages in Nagorno-Karabakh.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan launched a major offensive, leading to the rapid capitulation of the breakaway region, the flight of nearly all its 100,000 ethnic Armenian residents to Armenia, and the dissolution of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh on January 1, 2024.
Since the exodus, both sides have engaged in peace talks, with Armenia returning four villages captured during the first war in May 2024, and the U.S. offering a new peace deal in August 2025 to resolve the conflict.
