Former D.C. Diplomat Charged with Sexually Abusing His Children’s Playmates

A World Bank consultant, former Australian diplomat, and father of three is being held without bond and charged with sexually abusing three of his children’s playmates who lived in his Northwest Washington, DC, neighborhood.

Thomas Mahony, 42, was arrested in July and accused of sexually abusing two 7-year-old girls and one 8-year-old boy.

“Mahony, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffed,” appeared in D.C. Superior Court Thursday where he failed to get bond as he was considered a “significant flight risk,” according to Washington Post coverage of the case.

According to the Post:

The arrest has shocked the D.C. youth swimming community, where he was known as a proud father who regularly volunteered to time races or take team photos. Two of the swim teams Mahony had volunteered with, All Star Aquatics and MVP Dolphins, sent emails to families asking them to contact police with additional information.

Court records cited by the newspaper revealed that police wanted to arrest Mahoney as far back as November 2023 when he allegedly assaulted one of the girls while she on a playdate with his children.

The U.S. attorney’s office declined to prosecute due to “consideration of the government’s burden of beyond a reasonable doubt,” according to the Post’s examination of the records.

Now prosecutors have charged Mahony with two counts of first-degree child sexual abuse and one count of second-degree child sexual abuse stemming from incidents from February 2023 to July 13, 2025.

Under D.C. law, first-degree abuse involves a sexual act while second-degree abuse involves sexual contact that can occur over or under clothing.

All three minors reportedly told authorities that they had been at Mahony’s house having fun with his children doing typical activities like “watching a movie, playing video games, or pretending to run a Target store” when the abuse occurred.

In a court filing this week, prosecutors revealed that more charges could be on the way.

The mother of two of the children told the Post she once considered Mahony “the hero of the community.” Her family first got to know him “in 2023 as the involved father and volunteer photographer at events hosted by their children’s elementary school.”

“The only thing you can do is just cry,” she said. “I feel like I failed as a mother by trusting this person.”

Prosecutors worked to keep Mahony jailed ahead of his Thursday hearing. They expressed concern that the Australian national would flee the United States, citing his relationship with the Australian Embassy. Even if he surrendered his passport, he could obtain another there, they argued.

In a motion opposing Mahony’s release, prosecutors also said his “wife plans to move to Japan, then Australia in the coming weeks.” They reported Mahony’s parents “have been packing up his apartment.”

A source at the World Bank told the Post that Mahony’s employment was terminated as soon as the bank learned of his arrest.

Britain’s FBI to Investigate Alleged Police Involvement in Child Rape Grooming Gangs

Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said that it will take over a grooming gang investigation from the South Yorkshire Police after the force came under fire for investigating itself amid accusations that some of its officers were complicit in the sexual exploitation of children and had personally raped young girls.

A team of officers from the NCA’s Operation Stovewood will take the lead in the investigation into “allegations of child sexual abuse by former South Yorkshire Police officers” after the force requested Britain’s equivalent of the FBI to take over the investigation.

It came after allegations from victims of the predominantly Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs in Rotherham, who accused members of the South Yorkshire Police of collaborating with the child rape networks and of sexual abuse. One victim accused former Police Constable Hassan Ali and another unnamed officer of raping her in the back of a police car as a child.

The allegations threw into question the police force’s Operation Linden into sexual exploitation, with critics claiming that the South Yorkshire Police could not be trusted to investigate its own officers due to potential bias and likely conflicts of interest.

Professor Alexis Jay, whose 2014 report found that around 1,400 mostly young white girls were sexually abused by mainly Pakistani Muslims in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013, said last month that she was “shocked” the SYP was investigating itself.

“In far too many cases, the priority for the institution, of whatever kind, is to protect their reputation rather than prioritising the welfare of children and the devastating effect that sexual abuse can have,” she said.

Following the critiques, the National Crime Agency said that it would take over the investigation.

Israel is committing war crimes – and its legal heads remain silent

The silence of Israel’s three senior legal officials charged with ensuring that Israel’s military operations comply with the rules of international law is indefensible

Close to twenty experts in international law and legal theory from law faculties in Israel’s universities sent a letter on Wednesday to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in light of Israel’s plans to expand the fighting in the Gaza Strip, conquer it entirely or in part, and carry out what is described as “encouraging voluntary migration.”

The experts’ conclusion is unequivocal: the continuation of the war in the Gaza Strip – and certainly its expansion – has become illegal and may even be considered an “act of aggression” that entails criminal liability for senior Israeli officials.

“After nearly two years of fighting, when most of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people have been repeatedly displaced from their homes, medical services have collapsed, and tens of thousands are suffering from malnutrition and hunger, the marginal addition to state security that could be gained, if at all, from continuing the fighting – let alone expanding it – is not proportionate,” the legal scholars wrote.

“The use of force that exceeds the bounds of proportionality and cannot achieve the aim of self-defense is unlawful, and in certain circumstances even a crime, under the most severe categories of the laws governing the use of force and international criminal law,” they added.

This is a harsh legal opinion, certainly not one that will be embraced by the prime minister, the heads of the military, and members of the security cabinet. But the letter’s signatories see it as their duty to state the matter plainly and reflect Israel’s true position under the rules of international law.

In a first, Argentinian lawmaker indicted for anti-Israel social media posts

Left-wing legislator Vanina Biasi faces charges over several posts comparing Israel to Nazis as Milei’s government cracks down on anti-Israel activity

An Argentine lawmaker has been indicted on criminal charges after comparing Israel to the Nazi regime and calling it a “genocide state” on social media.

Vanina Biasi of the left-wing Workers’ Party is the first sitting legislator in Argentina to be indicted for antisemitism, and the case against her marks the first time social media posts demonizing Israel have been legally recognized as antisemitic in Argentina.

The indictment comes as Argentina takes an aggressive stance against antisemitism and anti-Israel activity, fueled by the philosemitism of its populist president, Javier Milei. Charges against Biasi were first filed in late November 2023, days after Milei’s election and before he was sworn in. Biasi lost a series of appeals, leading to the formal indictment on Thursday.

The case against Biasi centers on eight tweets she posted on X between November 27, 2023, and January 29, 2024.

“The Zionist Nazis need to destroy UNRWA humanitarian aid so the extermination can accelerate. They use famine, like in Nazi concentration camps, as a method of extermination,” Biasi wrote in one of the tweets. In another, she wrote, “The Zionist state is Nazi because of its practices and ideology.”

Prosecutors argued that Biasi’s messages went beyond free speech and constituted hate speech under Argentina’s Anti-Discrimination Law. A federal judge backed that assessment in April, saying that her posts incited hatred against Jews, and ordered a seizure of assets equal to about $7,500.

Biasi’s legal team appealed on free speech grounds.

On Thursday, the Federal Chamber unanimously upheld the indictment and asset seizure. The judges ruled that freedom of expression is not absolute and can be restricted to protect others’ rights, national security, public order, health or morals. They agreed that Biasi exceeded the limits of allowable free speech.

Biasi is a prominent leader of the Workers’ Party, a former national lawmaker, and a recently elected member of the Buenos Aires city parliament. If convicted, she could face a prison sentence of one month to three years.

The case has divided Argentinians, with some arguing that even if her posts might be seen as objectionable, they should not be treated as illegal. Others say they are glad the government is taking a strong stance against antisemitism.

Worse still, Bari Weiss, a journalist with a long history of zealous pro-Israel advocacy, is being considered as the network’s new ombudsman, shaping its political direction, precisely because of her “pro-Israel stance.”

Israel’s Man In Silicon Valley

Although Skydance, Ellison’s media empire, is officially headed by David, it is well understood that father Larry holds both the purse strings and the reins of power. With a net worth of $301 billion, placing him second on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires Rankings, Larry made his fortune by founding tech giant Oracle.

Oracle started as a project for the Central Intelligence Agency. Indeed, it is named after Project Oracle, a 1970s CIA operation on which Ellison worked. For some time, the CIA was Oracle’s only customer, until it began to win contracts with other agencies of the U.S. national security state. Today, although Oracle’s customer base is much wider, it maintains its role as the privatized face of the CIA.

Yet if Oracle is close to Washington and Langley, it is perhaps even more intimately tied to the State of Israel. An avowed Zionist, Ellison has worked tirelessly to advance Israel’s political project. Among his closest personal friends is Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he vacationed on his private island in Hawaii. Ellison was so impressed and confident in the Israeli prime minister that he offered him a seat on his company’s board, replete with a salary of $450,000.

While Oracle has signed multiple lucrative contracts with the Israeli national security state, Ellison himself has personally bankrolled the Israeli Defense Forces, giving tens of millions of dollars to the Friends of the IDF, an organization that purchases equipment for the Israeli military. This included a $16.6 million pledge (the largest single donation the group has received) to build a new training facility for soldiers defending what he called “our home.” As Ellison explained:

In my mind, there is no greater honor than supporting some of the bravest people in the world, and I thank Friends of the IDF for allowing us to celebrate and support these soldiers year after year. We should do all we can to show these heroic soldiers that they are not alone.”

Oracle sees itself as an activist organization, one whose goal is the advancement of the Israeli colonization project. Safra Catz, the company’s Israeli-American CEO, bluntly explained that any employees uncomfortable with supporting a genocide should simply quit. “We are not flexible regarding our mission, and our commitment to Israel is second to none,” she said, adding:

This is a free world and I love my employees, and if they don’t agree with our mission to support the State of Israel, then maybe we aren’t the right company for them. Larry and I are publicly committed to Israel and devote personal time to the country, and no one should be surprised by that.”

DOJ To Expunge Employees' COVID-19 Vaccination Records: Lawyers

The government has agreed to a settlement that involves expunging records showing the COVID-19 vaccination status of employees, lawyers representing workers who sued said on Aug. 7.

Officials must expunge the records under the settlement and bar discrimination based on vaccine status, Feds for Freedom, the workers group, and its lawyers said in a statement.

An email to the Department of Justice attorney who filed a voluntary dismissal in the case on Thursday returned a message saying he is on leave until Aug. 11. The department’s media office did not respond to a request for comment by publication time.

The formal settlement has not been entered on the court docket, but lawyers for Feds for Freedom said it includes the reimbursement of some of the legal fees incurred in the case the organization brought against the government over the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal workers.

Feds for Freedom sued the government in 2021, after President Joe Biden imposed COVID-19 vaccine requirements on all federal workers. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown entered a preliminary injunction in January 2022 that blocked the mandate as the case proceeded, finding that Biden lacked the authority to issue such a mandate.

A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit several months later lifted the injunction, saying the federal workers who sued should have taken their complaints to an administrative board rather than the courts. The full appeals court in 2023 kept the mandate in place.

The Supreme Court in late 2023 vacated the rulings in the case because Biden had rescinded the mandate, meaning none of the decisions will serve as precedent in future cases.

Brown in March vacated the injunction. He also directed the government and plaintiffs to file a status report.

UK Government Warns Against VPNs, Caught Using Them Themselves

MPs warn against VPNs to skirt Britain’s new online censorship law while billing taxpayers for their own.

The UK’s technology secretary urged citizens to think twice before using virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass the country’s new oppressive online digital ID checks, framing it as a matter of child safety. His comments have landed awkwardly, given that many MPs, including senior ministers, rely on taxpayer-funded VPN subscriptions themselves.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Peter Kyle warned: “For everybody out there who’s thinking about using VPNs, let me say this to you directly: verifying your age keeps a child safe. Keeps children safe in our country, so let’s just not try to find a way around.”

Politico reported that official spending records show parliamentarians across party lines have been billing the public for commercial VPN services.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds charged taxpayers for a two-year NordVPN subscription in April 2024.

Labour MP Sarah Champion, who in 2022 pressed the government to investigate whether teenage VPN use could undermine online safety rules, also has a subscription on record.

The government says it has no intention of outlawing VPNs but admits it is monitoring how young people use them. This comes after a sharp increase in downloads following the rollout of mandatory digital ID checks under the new censorship law, the Online Safety Act.

For security experts, VPNs are not a subversive tool but a vital one.

The real danger lies in the age verification industry itself.

Despite stressing that banning VPNs is “not on the cards,” Kyle has urged caution, telling Good Morning Britain viewers: “Do the right thing… Because every time you prove your age, you keep children safe across Britain. It is a minority of people who are trying to use the VPNs. I urge them not to.”

A government spokesperson said platforms are being told to block material that promotes VPNs to children, while conceding there are many legitimate reasons for adults to use them.

Kyle has also been using his media appearances to attack political opponents of the Online Safety Act, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has vowed to scrap it. Farage claims the law threatens free expression and fuels state surveillance. Kyle responded by accusing him of siding with those who endanger children.

UK Details Its Bank Account Surveillance Powers

Bank accounts could soon become open ledgers for the state, with social security claimants first in line for scrutiny.

Plans to give the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) new authority to probe people’s bank accounts are moving closer to reality, with Parliament expected to pass the measures later this year. Civil liberties groups say the proposals open the door to financial surveillance on a scale never before seen in the UK.

Under Labour’s Fraud, Error and Debt Bill, the DWP would be able to compel banks and building societies to share information about social security claimants.

Baroness Maeve Sherlock told the House of Lords that the so‑called “Eligibility Verification Measure” will require institutions to provide specific account details once a formal request is issued. This includes the account holder’s name, date of birth, sort code, account number, and certain indicators of whether the account fits the rules for receiving social security.

Officials say the information will be used to check if someone qualifies for the payments they receive, pointing to the £16,000 ($21,000) savings threshold that normally rules out eligibility for Universal Credit. The department intends to introduce the process in stages over a year, starting with a smaller group of financial providers.

The legislation also hands the DWP a second power: the ability to issue “Direct Deduction Orders” to remove money directly from wages or bank accounts. Similar powers already exist for HMRC and the Child Maintenance Service, and the DWP expects to use them thousands of times a year.

Labour calls this the “biggest fraud crackdown in a generation” and claims it could save £1.5 billion within five years. But privacy advocates, including Big Brother Watch, say the policy is “intrusive” and “threatens to usher in an unprecedented system of mass financial surveillance.”
