In summer 2025, a claim spread online that U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed in an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson that "Operation Mockingbird," an alleged CIA campaign to manipulate the domestic press, never ended.
Gabbard did not explicitly confirm the existence of Operation Mockingbird in her interview with Johnson and her office has not, as of this writing, clarified her comments. Instead, she appeared to imply that CIA operatives, acting on their own, sometimes leak intel to the press to "undermine" U.S. President Donald Trump's agenda.
While claims that the CIA promoted propaganda in the domestic press through an extensive and widespread operation were unsubstantiated as of this writing, the CIA does have a long history of manipulating foreign media to serve political goals abroad, and a 1976 Senate investigation found that at least 50 American journalists were CIA assets at the time. The CIA declined to answer Snopes' inquiries about Operation Mockingbird on the record.
