Timing is no coincidence

Mkhaimer Abusada, an associate professor of political science at Gaza’s Al Azhar University, now based in Cairo, puts it bluntly: “Israel has realized it failed to free the Israeli hostages and defeat Hamas,” he said. “The continuation of the war guarantees Netanyahu will remain in his seat.”
Netanyahu’s coalition controls just 61 seats in the Knesset – a razor-thin majority. Several ultra-Orthodox lawmakers have threatened to bolt over a controversial draft law that would conscript Haredi youth into the Israel Defense Forces. Losing even a handful of members could cost him his majority and trigger elections he’s far from certain to win.
That vulnerability hands outsized leverage to hardline partners like Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir – both vocal advocates for expanding the war.
Yariv Oppenheimer, an Israeli peace activist and board member of Peace Now, one of the country’s leading anti-occupation NGOs, sees a clear political motive. “Netanyahu is doing what’s good for himself and his own coalition,” he said. But, Oppenheimer adds, there’s also ideology at play.
“Netanyahu and his government don’t want to reach a ceasefire deal with Hamas. They don’t want to end the war. And the alternative of ending the war is to escalate the war and to conquer parts of the Gaza Strip. They are doing that in order to pave the way for eventually building Israeli settlements.”

While the saga played out in one-sided NYC court rooms, Hoffman was making regular visits to Joe Biden’s White House.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that he believes the plan to take over the Gaza Strip will bring about the release of the 20 remaining living hostages in Gaza.
In response to a question at a press conference for local media on whether he would agree to a partial hostage release deal if Hamas agrees to one after the operation begins, Netanyahu does not answer directly, replying instead that he is “committed to…the release of all 20 of our hostages, and the defeat of Hamas is the decisive operation that I believe will achieve that.”
There are 50 hostages still in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Addressing his commitment to returning the hostages, Netanyahu says: “People ask why the war has taken so long — first of all, because we paused for the release of hostages.”
He adds that the newly approved operation aims to bring down Gaza City — Hamas’s “center of gravity” — in a decisive strategic hit to the terror group that contrasts with previous operations.
“We didn’t do this in a systematic way before; we saw Gaza, we went here and we went there. But as a goal — to topple Hamas, to topple its last stronghold, to bring down its center of gravity — that we did not do before. We are doing that now, and I am certain this will also bring about the release of all the hostages.”
Hamas “has raised impossible conditions — not only in our view, but also in the view of the United States,” he charges, saying “They include, among other things, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip — including from the Philadelphi Corridor — which would allow the free smuggling of weapons; the release of imprisoned terrorists, these monsters; and a demand for binding international guarantees that would prevent the IDF from resuming combat. These are terms of surrender that no responsible government would agree to accept — and certainly I will not accept them.”
“Hamas has deceived us. Therefore, I have become convinced that the only way to return all our hostages is to defeat Hamas,” says Netanyahu.
He adds that in the security cabinet’s discussions, “an alternative was also raised — to hold our position while encircling the remaining Hamas strongholds and carrying out raids.
After an in-depth discussion, an overwhelming majority of cabinet members concluded that by this method, we would achieve neither victory nor the return of our hostages.”
The decision for the expanded takeover was achieved “despite immense pressures from home and abroad — pressures to stop the war,” which Netanyahu says existed “even before we entered Rafah” last year.
The premier says that if he had yielded “to those pressures,” Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh “would still be ruling in Gaza, [former Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah would be in Lebanon, [former Syrian president Bashar] al-Assad in Syria, and Iran today would be racing toward a nuclear weapon.”

A Texas mayor was caught on video using disturbing language berating a Christian preacher at a LGBT festival, video shows.
Jim Ross, the mayor of Arlington, Texas, targeted the preacher during a 2023 LGBT event. The shocking moments were captured by Vice, though Ross’s face is blurred and the footage has just now been uncovered by The Dallas Express.
Ross claims he’s a moderate, but routinely pushes race-based and gender-based initiatives and has promoted LGBT “pride.”
“I believe y’all can have free speech. But this is some hateful s*** and I am a heterosexual guy,” Ross says in the footage, speaking to preacher Ruben Israel, who has since passed away.
“You stand out here like you are a bda motherfer,” the mayor continued. “You don’t think anal sex is good, do you? Have you ever fed your old lady in the a? I’d f your old lady in the a.”
Ross was not done, however. He called Israel a “p* motherer” and told him, “Shut your a, shut your a, you little piece of s. You ought to talk s, these people around here are having a good f***ing time.”
At the time of the confrontation, Ross was serving as mayor of Arlington, and currently holds the same position.
Tarrant County GOP Chairman Bo French said Ross needs to resign “immediately” over the conduct.
Tarrant County Republican Precinct Chair TK Campbell, also speaking to The Dallas Express, said Ross’s unprofessional behavior mirrors that of prominent Democrats, who’ve clung to cursing as an apparent political strategy.
“The now Mayor of Arlington’s vile, profanity-laced rant at the late Ruben Israel, a Christian street preacher, is a disgrace,” Campbell said. “Perhaps the mayor was stressed out because of not being able to pay his taxes of late, but his unprofessional conduct mirrors the worst of today’s cursing Democrats. Leadership demands better.”
Campbell’s comments regarding taxes seem to reference Ross recently having his wages garnished by the IRS. According to The Dallas Express, Ross owes $940.39 in penalties and interest and has an outstanding debt of about $175,000.
During his tenure as mayor, Ross has created advisory councils based on race, religion, and identity, including black, Asian, Latino, Muslim, and LGBTQ.
In 2023, Ross defended the forums during an NAACP event. “You have to have a black advisory council because, folks, black people are not the same. Did y’all know that?” he said, according to KERA News. “Latinos are not the same. Asians are not the same.”

It works like this. In Medieval times, Jews were accused of murdering non-Jews, particularly children, to use their blood in the performance of religious rituals. Every time a Jew is accused of murdering a non-Jew, so the thinking goes, this endangers Jews by fuelling the very kind of antisemitism that ultimately led to the gas chambers of Auschwitz.
Responsible people, or at least those with a reputation to protect, therefore avoid making any statements that might contribute to the impression that Jews – or in this case, the soldiers of the Jewish state of Israel – are killing non-Jews.
If such criticisms are made, they must be carefully couched by western politicians, the media and public figures in language that makes the killing of non-Jews – in this case, Muslim and Christian Palestinians – appear reasonable.
Israel is simply “defending itself” in killing and maiming 100,000s of civilians in Gaza after Hamas’ one-day attack on 7 October 2023.
The enclave’s masses of dead innocents are just the unfortunate price paid to secure the “return of Israeli hostages” held by Hamas.
Israel’s active, months-long starvation of Gaza’s children is a “humanitarian crisis”, not a crime against humanity.
Anyone who dissents from this narrative is denounced as an antisemite, whether they be millions of ordinary people; every respected human rights organisation in the world, including the Israeli group B’Tselem; the World Health Organisation; the International Criminal Court; genocide scholars like Omer Bartov, himself an Israeli; and so on.
It is the perfect, self-reinforcing loop, one entirely divorced from the reality being live-streamed to us daily.

This is the shocking moment a Serbian minister suffered a stroke live on television, leaving him stumbling over his words before the broadcast was cut short.
Minister for Public Investments Darko Glišićfell fell ill on Tuesday while he made an appearance on a morning show for Serbian TV channel Televizija Pink.
Footage from the program shows the moment Glišić's speech slowed and how he began to stutter while his face began drooping.
The two TV presenters interviewing appeared concerned just moments before the broadcast was cut short.
The minister was rushed to a hospital in Belgrade and was reportedly unconscious.
He is understood to have undergone an emergency operation.
His condition was described as serious and was temporarily put on a ventilator.
Glišić leads the Ministry of Public Investments and is considered to be one of Serbian President Alexander Vučić's closest associates.
