Elon Musk vows immediate legal action against Apple over 'antitrust violation' favoring OpenAI
"Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store."
Elon Musk said on Monday night that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, would be taking "immediate legal action" against Apple, accusing the tech giant of "behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store."
Musk wrote, "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action."
This comes after the X app, formerly Twitter, reached the number 1 spot for the News category on the App Store, and the number five spot for top free apps.
"Hey Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps," Musk wrote earlier in the day. "Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know."
In June 2024, Apple announced that it was partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT across all devices. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said at the time, "We're excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way. Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI's mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone. Together with Apple, we're making it easier for people to benefit from what AI can offer."
Earlier in August, President Donald Trump announced that Apple would be investing $600 billion over four years into the US, as well as the launch of the American Manufacturing Program (AMP), which aims to expand Apple’s domestic supply chain. Through AMP, Apple said that all cover glass for its iPhones and Apple Watches would be made in the US.
