PA President Mahmoud Abbas has also been given new-found authority after Mr Albanese and other global leaders engaged with him prior to the announcement.
Mr Abass is the PA President, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and the leader of radical political party Fatah.
In a 2023 speech to his Fatah party, Mr Abbas claimed the Holocaust was “not about antisemitism”, instead blaming Jews' “social role”, such as involvement in finance.
In the same speech, he claimed that European Jews had no historical connection to the Middle East, a discredited antisemitic theory.
He has also compared Israel to the Nazis, accusing it of lying “like Goebbels”, and has previously told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Israel has committed “50 Holocausts” against Palestinians.
However, Australia's Jewish groups have argued the government is now backing a body with no agreed borders, no unified leadership across the West Bank and Gaza, and a limited capacity to deliver peace or control extremism.

David Gonski and Jillian Segal lead Israel lobby heavies at Gold Coast antisemitism summit
The looming Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) summit is backed by an assortment of human rights advocates, astroturfers, property developers, and Zionist agitators. Wendy Bacon and Yaakov Aharon investigate.
Two of the keynote speakers at the CAM antisemitism summit on the Gold Coast next month are the controversial Antisemitism Envoy Jillian Segal and businessman David Gonski who co-chairs the committee which runs the event.
The conference will be chaired by LNP Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, and the CAM invitations highlight Australian Human Rights Commissioner Lorraine Finlay‘s participation as a speaker.
MWM asked Finlay how much she knew about the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), the organisation running the conference, before she accepted the invitation to speak. The AHRC media unit replied, “Unfortunately, the Commissioner is unavailable.”
Most of the speakers are openly conservative, including Woollahra Mayor Sarah Swan and Waverley Council’s Will Nemesh, who are helping promote the Summit. Nemesh recently welcomed Robert Gregory to Waverley Council’s Multicultural Advisory Committee.
Gregory is the CEO of the hard-right Australian Jewish Association (AJA), which has partnered with Advance and is currently being investigated by the Anti-Discrimination Board of NSW for alleged racial and religious vilification of Palestinians and Muslims.
Labor’s pro-Israel hawks are well-represented by retired Senator and Patron of Labor Friends of Israel, Nova Peris, and retired Labor politician and businessman Michael Easson, whose company, EG Funds, is also a sponsor.
Peris is a vehement supporter of Israel and played a prominent role in the pro-Israel Better Australia campaign. The ex-Olympian and Senator has shared content on social media referring to Muslims as “Satan worshipping cockroaches [who] need to be eradicated.”
