Space-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is being explored to enhance global network security, particularly for transcontinental and intercontinental communications. QKD uses quantum mechanics to securely generate and transmit cryptographic keys. Space-based QKD overcomes the limitations of terrestrial QKD and when combined with symmetric key infrastructure (SKI) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC), will create a crypto-resilient network. Financial firms are likely the first adopters, followed by government agencies protecting diplomatic and national defense infrastructure.
