John Travolta piloted a plane laden with aid supplies and Scientologists to Haiti today to bolster the US-based group's disaster relief effort.
The actor and leading Scientologist flew his own Boeing 707 to the capital, Port-au-Prince, shortly before US troops pulled a 35-year-old man alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Port-au-Prince. The man, saved two weeks after the earthquake was taken to hospital. Witnesses said he appeared to have few injuries.

Europe Needs 'Own Mueller' to Probe Alleged Russian Meddling - EP's Party Leader
Robert Mueller in the United States, to look into the alleged Russian disinformation campaign, president of the European parliament's Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Guy Verhofstadt said Monday.
On Sunday, the Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee issued a report in which the panel members said they had heard some evidence pointing to a campaign to influence UK election and referenda, allegedly led by Moscow.
"Europe needs it's own Mueller, to investigate the extent of Russian disinformation campaigns & other attacks on our democracies. In September I will push the Eur Parliament to such measures to clean up our internet & social media. It's time to fight back!" Verhofstadt, who serves as the main EU negotiator on Brexit, said on Twitter.
Mueller has been looking into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and the purported collusion between the Russian government and the campaign of US President Donald Trump. The US president has repeatedly described the probe as a witch hunt.
Russian officials have stressed that Moscow does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and pointed out that the allegations against Russia had not been substantiated.

CAIRO — An Egyptian court sentenced 75 people to death on Saturday, including top figures of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, for their involvement in a 2013 sit-in, state media reported.
The Cairo Criminal Court referred the sentences to the Grand Mufti — the country’s top theological authority — for his non-binding opinion as is the norm in capital cases. Though non-binding, the formality gives a window of opportunity for a judge to reverse an initial sentence.
The sentences are subject to appeal.
Sentencing for more than 660 others involved in the case was scheduled for Sept. 8, the Al-Ahram news website reported. Those sentences, too, are subject to appeal.
Of the 75 defendants referred to the Mufti, 44 are jailed and 31 are at large. The court normally hands down the maximum sentence for fugitives but a re-retrial is typically held after they are caught.
The case involves a total 739 defendants, including the Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie and photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid. The charges range from murder to damaging public property. Neither Badie nor Abu Zeid were sentenced to death in this case.

On July 29, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Tiger Forces, backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces, liberated the town of Abidin in the western Daraa countryside from fighters of the ISIS-affiliated Khalid ibn al-Walid Army, according to Syrian pro-government activists. The liberated town is located only 2km north of the Syrian-Jordanian border.
Earlier, the SAA and former fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) launch a ground attack on the key town of al-Shajarah and captured several positions and farms around it. However, the SAA is yet to impose its control of the town.

Ginsburg: “I have about at least 5 more years” on the Supreme Court
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Sunday said she hopes to remain on the high court for at least five more years, according to CNN.
“My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years,” 85-year-old Ginsburg said at an event in New York City.
The liberal Ginsburg, who was appointed to the court by former President Clinton in 1993, on Sunday said she missed her back-and-forth with Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away in 2016.
“If I had my choice of dissenters when I was writing for the court, it would be Justice Scalia,” Ginsburg said. “Sometimes it was like a ping-pong game.”

Trump doesn’t understand Iran's culture of resistance: Sherman
A former US under secretary of state for political affairs has taken President Donald Trump to task for his rash policies and uncalculated measures towards Iran after taking Washington out of a nuclear deal with Tehran, saying Trump does not understand Iran's culture of resistance.
In an interview with Yahoo News published on Sunday, Wendy Sherman slammed Trump's use of threats to push his adversaries into submission, emphasizing that Iranians are not a nation to surrender to any threats.
Sherman was a key member of the US nuclear negotiating team under former secretary of state, John Kerry, who pulled off the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to fruition in 2015.
Trump is a stern critic of the nuclear accord, agreed between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany. Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.
The US president announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement and that he planned to reinstate US nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose "the highest level" of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.
