Rumford police search for three armed suspects after early morning car chase

RUMFORD, Maine (WGME) – A suspect is still on the loose after a car chase in Rumford.

 

Officers say five people fired rifles at them during a pursuit on South Rumford Road.

 

Their vehicle crashed, and they ran into the woods.

 

Around 5 a.m., Rumford Police issued a shelter-in-place order to find the suspects.

 

By 6:30 a.m., police found two of the suspects, and the order was lifted.

 

Police are still searching for the three remaining suspects, who are in their 20s.

 

They were last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and sweatpants and could be armed.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) – Authorities say they have captured the three teen boys who escaped from Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland on Friday.

 

The Maine Department of Corrections says two 17-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy escaped from Long Creek around 12:35 p.m.

Police say they received information that the teens were heading to Saco in a vehicle.

 

Around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, police in Saco spotted a vehicle and began following it. The car pulled into a parking lot on Main Street and all three suspects ran away.

 

Police say two suspects were quickly caught. The third suspect was caught a short time later.

 

All three teens were turned over to the custody of the Maine Department of Corrections.

 

The Maine DOC says it has identified the method of escape and has taken action to secure the facility.

 

The department will be conducting a review of facility security infrastructure and management practices and make adjustments to prevent future incidents.

Long Creek has a long history of residents escaping:

 

In 2017, state troopers captured three juveniles who got out after they stole and crashed an SUV.

In 2024, two teens got out for four days, during which they carjacked a woman, and each stole two separate cars in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

In July, a 14-year-old got out and was loose for two-and-a-half hours.
