Palestine on Friday warned of an “unprecedented” Israeli assault on churches in the territory as part of a “systematic campaign to eradicate Christian presence,” Anadolu reports.
The Higher Presidential Committee of Church Affairs in Palestine pointed to “an unprecedented assault on the churches of the Holy Land, led by a direct attack on the Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem.”
“These actions are part of a systematic policy aimed at dismantling the authentic Christian presence in Palestine and stripping the land of its historic religious institutions,” it said.
The committee explained that on Thursday “Israeli occupation authorities have frozen the bank accounts of the Patriarchate and imposed crippling, unjust taxes on its properties.”
“Such measures severely threaten the Church’s ability to provide spiritual, humanitarian, and community services, constituting a flagrant breach of the historic Status Quo and a gross violation of international law and binding agreements,” Ramzi Khouri, PLO Executive Committee member and Head of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine, said in a letter addressed to church hierarchs worldwide.
The committee added that “the assault extends beyond financial strangulation.”
“Lands belonging to the Orthodox Church around the Monastery of Saint Gerasimus (Deir Hijleh) near Jericho have been targeted through aggressive settlement expansion,” it said. “In the past two years, new illegal settlement outposts have been established in the Jericho area, posing a direct threat to its historic and sacred character and forming part of a broader plan to erase Palestine’s Christian and historical identity.”
The Higher Presidential Committee stressed that “these practices come within the broader occupation policy aimed at changing Jerusalem’s identity, erasing its religious and cultural character, and ultimately eliminating the Palestinian presence in the city.”
The letter concluded with an urgent appeal to churches and Christian institutions worldwide to “take immediate political, legal, and media action to halt these violations and defend the Church’s freedom to carry out its spiritual and humanitarian mission.”
“Protecting the churches of Palestine is a collective responsibility and a historic trust,” the committee affirmed.
In recent years, Israeli authorities have escalated measures demanding that historic churches in Jerusalem pay taxes.
Churches also say Israeli authorities facilitate the takeover of church-owned properties in the city by Israeli settler groups, as is happening in the Bab al-Khalil (Jaffa Gate) area of Jerusalem’s Old City.

James Comey posts emotional tribute to Taylor Swift, says she provides hope through Trump 'bad dream'
Comey accused Trump of “humiliating” the country.
Former FBI Director James Comey released a five-minute video on Sunday in which he praised pop star Taylor Swift, calling her a source of inspiration during the Trump administration.
The video, posted on Comey’s Substack, opened with him saying he would not discuss Trump’s recent efforts to negotiate a peace deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Ukraine. Comey accused Trump of “humiliating” the country and said he instead wanted to highlight “a truly inspirational figure named Taylor Swift.”
Comey described himself as a longtime “Swiftie,” recalling that he attended his first Swift concert 15 years ago. He said he was particularly inspired by her recent appearance on her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast and said that Swift’s career reflects a certain way of living that resonates with parents and kids.

The former FBI chief also expressed frustration with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s outspoken social media attacks on Trump, saying he does not want Democrats to become “like Trump and his followers.”
“There are far more decent, honest, kind people in America than there are mean jerks,” he said, referring to supporters of the president.
Comey used Swift as a contrast to Trump, pointing to her opposition to the president’s reelection bid last year.
“While our elderly makeup-covered president is posting about whether Taylor Swift is still ‘hot’ and declaring that he can’t stand her, what’s she doing? Living her best life, producing great music and as she urged all of us to do during the podcast, not giving the jerks power over her mind,” he said.
“She said something about dealing with internet trolls that stuck with me: think of your energy as if it’s expensive,” Comey added.
Comey, who was the director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017, also reflected on attending his second Swift concert 14 years ago, referencing her song “Mean,” which has the lyrics “why you gotta be so mean?” and connecting it to what he called the “nasty people” in politics today.
He concluded his video by thanking Swift and urging her to “keep the faith.”

Hillary Clinton ADMITS TRUMP WAS RIGHT! – Says She is “Encouraged” by NATO Progress
Tarlov: There’s been a lot of conversation about the breakdown of the post world war two order, and we don’t have the same kind of relationships with our allies. To put it in Clintonian terms, there’s a lot of dumb power being used, not a lot of smart power. How far, I guess, do you think this breakdown has been if we would be welcomed back into the proverbial fold. It seems like from the NATO summit that that is the case, that our European allies are just waiting for Donald Trump to turn around and say, “Actually, I would like to go back to more or less the way things were, because we are better together than we are on our own.” What are your thoughts on that?
Clinton: You know,Jessica, I actually was encouraged by the events of the last several months. First of all, the NATO commitment by individual member states to increase their defense spending is very welcome. It’s something that prior administrations have certainly sought, and I think it’s great that we are seeing these commitments that now have to be followed through on; the willingness of European countries to support Ukraine, and by doing so, buy American weapons in order to provide them to the Ukrainians.
I think all of that is a very good signal that there is beginning to be a better understanding, both by the President and the people around him, as well as by the leaders of our European allies, that there can be common ground amongst us, and the kind of dismissiveness that we saw in the first Trump administration has been replaced by a much more obvious working relationship to the good of European security, transatlantic security, and hopefully Ukrainian security. So, I’m actually encouraged.
