Genocidal organ
"Genocidal Organ" is a Japanese science fiction novel by Project Itoh, first published in 2007 by Hayakawa Publishing, which was later reprinted in 2010 and translated into English by Edwin Hawkes, published in August 2012 by Haikasoru / Viz Media.
The story is set in an alternate history where the world is transformed after Sarajevo is destroyed by a homemade nuclear device, leading the leading democracies to become surveillance states while the developing world suffers from a wave of genocides.
The narrative centers on Clavis Shepherd, a US Special Forces officer tasked with tracking down John Paul, an American man suspected of causing global chaos through a concept he calls the "genocidal organ".
This organ is portrayed as a latent human capacity for genocide, which can be activated by a specific sequence of words, or "genocide grammar".
John Paul, originally an American agent in charge of a program called Operation John Paul, escaped his handlers and used the activation sequence to incite civil wars, believing it was necessary to protect the "First World" from terrorism and resentment.
The truth revealed is that the "genocidal organ" is a result of a massive subliminal messaging campaign orchestrated by the "First World Order," a group aiming to impose a global "Order of Nations" through controlled chaos.
The novel was adapted into an animated film directed by Shûkô Murase, produced by Manglobe, and released on February 3, 2017.
The film's production was delayed due to Manglobe's bankruptcy in 2015, but it resumed under the new studio Geno Studio, with the film premiering at the 2016 Tokyo International Film Festival before its theatrical release.
The film features a voice cast including Yûichi Nakamura as Clavis Shepherd and Takahiro Sakurai as John Paul.
The film received mixed reviews, with some praising its complex themes and disturbing insightfulness, while others criticized its pacing and animation quality, noting the production difficulties left visible scars.
A three-volume manga adaptation by Asou Gatou was also published from 2015 to 2017.
Project Itoh, born Satoshi Itō, was a renowned Japanese science fiction author who passed away from cancer in 2009 at the age of 35.
Still way ahead of its time
and that is only 2012
