Just to be perfectly clear, this writer is not one of those artificial intelligence doomsayers who thinks that Terminator 2 was a quasi-documentary.

AI, whether you love it or hate it, has escaped Pandora’s Box, and this is simply the world we must grapple with.

To say that it has no value whatsoever would be naive. Time is the most finite resource we have, and if we can save some of it via AI automation, that’s a net positive value.

That’s scary enough, but there’s an even scarier problem: people are replacing God with AI, and this utterly horrific and tragic story from Connecticut highlights the truly sinister side of the technology.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Stein-Erik Soelberg, 56, entered into a dangerous and parasocial relationship with a ChatGPT bot prior to murdering his own mother, and then himself.

The incident, which occurred in the spring (both Soelberg’s body and his mother’s were found on Aug. 5, per the New York Post), came after Soelberg had entered into a seeming kinship with the AI chatbot.

Diageo, an alcoholic beverage company, says it will be closing its Amherstburg, Ont., facility and moving some of its operations to the United States.

The company said it will close the facility where it bottles spirits like Crown Royal in February 2026.

It said it will move its bottling operations for products aimed at U.S. customers to the United States, while its products for Canadians will move to its Quebec facility.

The president of Diageo’s North America supply said it was not an easy decision.

“This was a difficult decision, but one that is crucial to improving the efficiency and resiliency of our supply chain network,” Marsha McIntosh said.

An assessment used to determine if employers genuinely need to hire temporary foreign workers due to a shortage of qualified Canadians has been misused by “unscrupulous employers,” posing serious challenges for Canada, says a briefing note from the federal labour department.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) says the “illicit misuse” of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) has become a “serious issue.” There is “evidence that these types of illicit activities are being undertaken by a range of players, both domestically and internationally,” according to the department’s June 18 briefing note, though no specific figures were provided.

“LMIA misuse includes both the buying and selling of LMIAs, as well as the unethical recruitment and exploitation of vulnerable foreign nationals for personal and financial gain,” the briefing note added, as first covered by Blacklock’s Reporter.

The labour department said that in 2024, tightening measures were implemented to improve the integrity of the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program “by reducing the number of available positions, and the length of time that LMIAs remain valid,“ thus “limiting opportunities for unscrupulous employers to misuse the Program.”

On Aug. 6, 2024, ESDC announced that then-Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault met with representatives of Canada’s largest business associations to convey that the TFW program cannot be used to avoid hiring qualified Canadian workers.

“I’ve been clear over the last year; abuse and misuse of the TFW program must end,” said Boissonnault in a statement at the time. “Bad actors are taking advantage of people and compromising the program for legitimate businesses.” Continue…

Saskatchewan RCMP say they’ve charged a 29-year-old man with arson in connection with a wildfire started in May that saw properties damaged and communities evacuated.

The charges are connected to what the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) called the Ditch 2 fire, which RCMP said caused structure damage and the “evacuation of several communities.”

RCMP said the fire started on May 26 in the Weyakwin area, which is 282 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

SPSA fire investigators looked into the cause of the fire and determined it was “human-caused,” RCMP said.

Waskesiu RCMP started a criminal investigation that led to Jason Halkett from LaRonge being charged with one count of arson - damage to property.

Saskatchewan RCMP said he was arrested in Saskatoon by local police on Aug. 27 and appeared in provincial court on Aug 28. Continue…

Residents of Fort Providence, N.W.T., are required to evacuate due to a wildfire that is now within two kilometres northeast of the community.

The community of Fort Providence issued an evacuation order at 8:50 a.m. on Aug. 31 due to a wildfire encroaching on the community. Residents are required to leave the area immediately, register with the community, and proceed to a reception centre set up in Hay River, about two hours and 20 minutes away by car to the southeast.

“This wildfire grew significantly overnight driven by severe northerly winds,” the province said in a wildfire update at 1:45 p.m. local time on Aug. 31, adding that the fire was now within two kilometres northeast of Fort Providence.

The local weather forecast for Aug. 31 is calling for winds primarily from the south until the evening when northerly winds are expected and could push the fire to Fort Providence’s edge.

The province says structure protection specialists have set up sprinklers and water cannons on all structures along the community’s northern perimeter to “mitigate potential losses.”

The fire was first discovered on July 7 and was caused by lightning, the province says. The fire has grown to 89,000 hectares in size as of 1:45 p.m. on Aug. 31 and is deemed to be “out of control.” The province indicates that the response to the fire is “limited action.” Continue…

The Ontario Provincial Police have seized more than $8 million in illegal cannabis products as part of a months-long investigation into a distribution network that spanned several provinces.

“The investigation identified a network allegedly producing and distributing illicit cannabis products in Ontario and transporting them to New Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia,” OPP said in an Aug. 29 press release posted on X.

Between October 2024 and July 2025, the police say they carried out five search warrants in Etobicoke, Ohsweken, Scarborough, and Brantford as well as in an “illicit cannabis grow operation” in Binbrook, which led to five individuals facing numerous charges.

Investigators seized illicit items with a street value of more than $8 million, including 753 pounds of dried illegal cannabis, a large quantity of illegal cannabis products, 28,280 illegal cannabis plants in various stages of growth, 400 cartons of contraband tobacco, 30 grams of suspected cocaine, and $4,600 in cash.

The search warrants were carried out by officers from the OPP’s Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team, the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Brant County’s OPP Street Crime Unit, and the Emergency Response Team.

The OPP says it partnered with the Safer Communities Section, which is supported by New Brunswick’s Department of Justice and Public Safety, and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) to carry out the investigation, called Project SHORT. Continue…
