At least seven people were shot after gunfire rang out three separate times Monday evening during the West Indian Day Parade in New York City.

The first of the shootings occurred “along the parade route on Eastern Parkway at about 5:35 p.m.,” leaving a man and a woman wounded, the New York Post reported.

Two other individuals were shot on Eastern Parkway about 6:30 p.m.

NBC New York noted that two more people were shot–both in their shoulders–around 6:45 p.m., and a 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded some time after that.

Parubiy was shot eight times on Saturday on a street in the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv. The attacker fled the scene but was apprehended by Ukrainian law enforcement on Monday.

The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Lviv resident Mikhail Stselnikov, appeared in court on Tuesday. The alleged killer received an opportunity to speak to reporters about the motives behind the attack, and claimed he had not held a specific grudge against Parubiy.

The Nova Scotia government has said its goal is to create an electronic database containing all residents' medical history.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) will appear before the Nova Scotia Supreme Court on September 2 and 3, 2025, in a case challenging recent amendments to the province’s Personal Health Information Act (PHIA).

At issue are 2024 budget bill changes to section 110 of the PHIA, which compel doctors, hospitals, and clinics to provide patient records to the Minister of Health and Wellness. The government has said the goal is to build an electronic database of every Nova Scotian’s medical history. Patient consent is not required.

The applicants — including physicians Dr. Chris Milburn and Dr. Aris Lavranos, citizen advocates Shelly Hipson, Valerie Henneberry, and Susan Kaiser, along with the Nova Scotia Civil Liberties Association — argue the amendments breach Charter protections of privacy under sections 7 and 8. These sections guarantee the right to life, liberty, and security of the person, as well as freedom from unreasonable search and seizure.

“Health care records contain among the most private and personal details of an individual’s life,” said JCCF lawyer Chris Fleury. “Consent of the patient must be required before a government can obtain medical records. Canada’s six-month period of standing up to U.S. President Donald Trump with trade actions has mostly officially come to a close today.

Duties imposed on the United States in response to Trump’s initial tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian goods have been lifted effective Sept. 1.

As a result, over 1,200 different types of U.S. goods coming into Canada could drop in prices in the coming weeks or months, covering a wide range, from food stuffs to motorcycles, from kitchenware to apparel.

Trump had implemented his first tariffs against Canada and Mexico in March, accusing the two countries of being springboards into the United States for illegal drugs and immigrants.

In response, Ottawa placed a surtax on C$30 billion worth of U.S. goods, the first phase of matching tariffs on C$155 billion worth of U.S. imports, said to be aimed at maximizing the damage to the United States while minimizing the impacts domestically. This was still the objective as of early last month. “We have always said that we will apply tariffs where they have the maximum impact in the United States and a minimum impact in Canada,” Carney said on Aug. 5, echoing statements he had first made in March after winning the Liberal leadership race. A digital version of Albertans’ health care cards will be the first document available in a newly launched app called the “Alberta Wallet,” which will allow residents to carry and manage government-issued documents on their phones, Premier Danielle Smith said at an Aug. 29 press conference.

She said the new optional tool will address the “ongoing embarrassment of the flimsy paper Alberta health care cards,” while offering Albertans “ease of use and convenience.”

“Our world is digital, and people have embraced this in droves—we developed the Alberta Wallet because Albertans expect their government to keep up with them,” she said. “We are adapting to an always-on high-speed digital future.”

Smith said protecting Albertans’ privacy and personal information is a priority for her government, noting the new digital tools are designed with encryption and security features to ensure information is only accessible to users and not shared with third parties without their consent.

She said that using the digital health card or wallet is optional, adding that her government “completely understand[s] that not everyone is comfortable with computers and mobile phones.” Continue…

Police in Renfrew are seeking suspects involved in a home invasion and a sexual assault at two hotels in the eastern Ontario town, with the suspects from both incidents still at-large.

Renfrew Ontario Provincial Officers (OPP) officers responded to an inn on Gibbons Road after receiving reports that two men had entered a room, attacked the occupants with what is believed to be bear spray, and stole property before fleeing shortly after 9 p.m. on Aug. 31, police said in a social media post.

Additional officers, including police dogs, were called to search for the suspects, who still have not been apprehended. The “targeted” attack is under investigation by the Renfrew OPP and Renfrew OPP Crime Unit, police said.

The search was initiated just days after a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault at a local motel evaded police capture, prompting a shelter-in-place order in the town located one hour west of Ottawa.

Renfrew residents living between the Millennium Trail and the western bank of the Bonnechere River were asked to remain indoors beginning at approximately 9 p.m. on Aug. 28, while police conducted a search for a suspect who was reportedly armed with a gun.

The investigation amounts to “an attempt to criminalize journalism and intimidate every reporter who digs into the government's candidates,” said Juno News co-founder Keean Bexte.
