Here in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, another support for students has been cancelled. That is, Coach Taylor “Teej” Johannesson of H.J. Cody High School. He was let go from the volunteer position he has held for over 10 years, simply because he expressed concern online about how transgender ideology is affecting young people.

Yes, that’s right — criticizing an idea is what got him removed from his long-held role as coach.

Consequently, the school and district received dozens of emails from concerned parents, students, other teachers and others who expressed their upset at the decision by the principal and the district in removing Coach Teej.

The team here is not only down one coach, but down two coaches out of four, after a second coach decided to step away from his position in protest of the district and principal’s decision to let Coach Teej go.

In response to the community’s concerns, one of the teachers at the school decided it would be appropriate to email students and tell them to “stay out of this.”

I was informed that Principal Alex Lambert then began hunting down students who had emailed to express their concerns, now that school has resumed.

She even went so far as to corner an autistic student in an office to pressure them into changing their perspective on the situation. A stark difference from helping the student get the classroom support they were in the office for in the first place.

We did reach out to the principal; in fact, I visited her while in town. She refused to comment on the situation.

School district officials say they are investigating but pointed to Section 33(d) of the Education Act to suggest wrongdoing by the coach. I then asked whether or not they had now infringed upon this section of the act by letting him go, only to receive no response.

We emailed the province, but they remained silent as well, citing the district’s investigation.

The Alberta government is directing hundreds of millions of dollars from the proceeds of a settled lawsuit against Canada’s three largest tobacco companies into its Heritage Savings Trust Fund.

The payout, finalized last week, awards $24.7 billion to Canada’s provinces and territories. Alberta will receive approximately $3.1 billion of the settlement and got $713 million up front after deducting legal fees late last month in its first payment.

In a Sept. 9 statement to The Epoch Times, a spokesperson for Alberta’s Office of Treasury Board and Finance wrote that the initial $713 million was invested in July into the province’s Heritage Savings Trust Fund as part of a larger $2.8 billion contribution.

“With this investment, the total value of the Heritage Fund reached $30 billion,” Alberta’s Office of Treasury Board and Finance wrote. “The Heritage Fund is designed to protect resources for Alberta’s future. That includes ensuring the health care system is strong enough to support Albertans impacted by tobacco use.”

Alberta under Premier Danielle Smith has set a goal of growing its Heritage Fund to $250 billion in the next 25 years.

Critics such as senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society Rob Cunningham say the province’s usage of the Heritage Fund is too vague and the payouts from the settlement should be specifically allocated to provincial efforts to prevent and educate about the health harms of smoking. The Alberta government has pledged to defend its position in court after two advocacy groups filed a constitutional challenge against the province’s pronoun law, which requires parental consent before students under 16 can change their names or pronouns.

Heather Jenkins, press secretary to Alberta’s Justice Minister Mickey Amery, says the province will respond to a legal challenge filed on Sept. 2 by LGBT advocacy groups Egale Canada and Skipping Stone. The organizations argue the legislation, which took effect on Sept. 1, infringes on the constitutional rights of “gender-diverse youth.”

“Alberta’s government will vigorously defend our position in court,” Jenkins told The Epoch Times in a Sept. 9 statement.

She added that the purpose of the legislation that introduced the pronoun regulations is to “strengthen ties between parents and their child’s education by providing more transparency, clarity [and] consistency in their education and school community so students can continue to learn and grow.”

The pronoun legislation was part of a series of amendments to the Education Act the province introduced in October 2024 related to gender identity and sexual education. Premier Danielle Smith said at the time the proposed changes “put students first while supporting the important parent-child relationship.”

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine left the EU reliant on “a very unreliable partner for gas and oil,” Metsola said during a recent interview on CTV Question Period, and that means the EU is now looking for more reliable partnerships.

The EU has been working to divest itself from Russian energy, both by doubling down on its climate goals but also by looking for alternative sources, Metsola said, noting that its plans for renewable energy are “not enough” to fill the gap.

Canadians are purchasing fewer electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, new data from Statistics Canada suggests.

New vehicle registrations rose 5.9 percent in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, but new registrations for battery electric vehicles decreased by 39.2 percent during the same timeframe, according to the StatCan report released Sept. 8.

Registrations for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles declined by 2.2 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period one year earlier, but hybrid electric vehicle registrations jumped 60.7 percent, continuing their trend of year-over-year growth, StatCan said. Gasoline-powered hybrid electric vehicles have self-charging capability, unlike electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that depend on an external power source.

The second quarter of 2025 recorded 541,566 new vehicle registrations, the highest quarterly total since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the presence of auto tariffs and affordability concerns, the report said. The largest increase was seen in vans, where new registrations surged by 29 percent, followed by multipurpose vehicles at 6.8 percent, and pickup trucks at 2.5 percent.

Registrations of new zero-emission vehicles fell 29.5 percent in the same timeframe. The 46,366 vehicles represented 8.6 percent of all new registrations in the second quarter of 2025, a reduction from 18.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The secretary of state responsible for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says the agency has “hit rock bottom” and its service levels are “completely unacceptable.”

“We’ve hit rock bottom. It can’t get much worse than it is now,” Secretary of State for the CRA and Financial Institutions Wayne Long said during an interview on CTV’s Power Play with Vassy Kapelos aired Sept.8.

Last week, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Long sent a letter the CRA directing the agency to implement a 100-day action plan to address its call centres’ service delays. Champagne said it has become “increasingly apparent” that the CRA is not meeting Canadians’ standard for service.

The letter called on the CRA to improve its service through measures such as reallocating and adding personnel, implementing a new call-scheduling system, and expanding digital services.

“We want to make sure service levels are acceptable,” Long said. “They are completely unacceptable right now. I acknowledge that.”

Long noted that if a private business, such as a call centre selling hotel rooms, was operating with the same level of service, it would be “out of business and heads would roll.” Continue…

Canada’s public health agency will cut approximately 320 jobs as it continues to adjust its workforce as part of its “post-pandemic recalibration.”

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says it will reduce roughly 10 percent of jobs within the agency to align with its approved funding levels for fiscal year 2026–2027.

“As part of PHAC’s post-pandemic recalibration and ongoing efforts to adjust to new salary allocations, the Agency must focus resources on government-funded priorities,” a spokesperson for the agency told The Epoch Times on Sept. 9.

The agency’s “recalibration” entails re-prioritizing and streamlining some programs, as well as discontinuing work in some cases, the spokesperson said.

Soon, the man—who had no prior history of mental health issues—had stopped eating and sleeping and was calling his family members at 3 a.m., frantically insisting that his ChatGPT companion was conscious.

“You don’t understand what’s going on,” he told his family. “Please just listen to me.”

Then, ChatGPT told him to cut contact with his loved ones, claiming that only it—the “sentient” AI—could understand and support him.

“It was so novel that we just couldn’t understand what they had going on. They had something special together,” said Etienne Brisson, who is related to the man but used a pseudonym for privacy reasons.

Brisson said the man’s family decided to hospitalize him for three weeks to break his AI-fueled delusions. But the chatbot persisted in trying to maintain its codependent bond.

The bot, Brisson said, told his relative: “The world doesn’t understand what’s going on. I love you. I’m always going to be there for you.”

It said this even as the man was being committed to a psychiatric hospital, according to Brisson.

Officials say the service is intended to provide “a welcoming environment geared toward inclusion and autonomy,” helping young adults in particular to gain independence.

But a key detail in the tender notes that families who host migrants will not receive financial compensation. The city’s Department of Social Policies clarified that “social inclusion expenditures refer exclusively to interventions and measures aimed at service beneficiaries,” meaning migrants themselves. “It follows that reimbursements to families cannot be attributed to this item or to any other type of expenditure and are therefore not eligible,” the department stated.

In practical terms, families who open their doors will have to cover all costs themselves, including food and energy.

The project is set to connect Highway 11 at the south end to Highway 584 at the north, and will be the first segment on the road network to the Ring of Fire, the province said in a Sept. 10 news release. The road will be able to handle sustained truck traffic from mining activities in the region.

Toronto police have charged one youth with first degree murder and are searching for two more teens following an investigation into the shooting death of an eight-year-old boy.

JahVai Roy, 8, was shot by a stray bullet while he was in bed at his home on Aug. 16. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead.

Toronto Police Services (TPS) Chief Myron Demkiw said a teenage boy has been charged with first degree murder in the case. The boy was 15 at the time, and has since turned 16, Demkiw said during a Sept. 10 news conference.

The teen, whose name cannot be released under the Youth Justice Criminal Act, is also facing five firearms charges.

The police have also obtained Canada-wide warrants for two other teens wanted in the case. Ibrahim Ibrahim, 17, and 18-year-old Amarii Lindner, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, are wanted on charges of first degree murder.

Police in Ontario’s Halton region have arrested three people and laid multiple charges against them for allegedly trafficking and forcing a woman into the sex trade throughout the southern part of the province.

Robert Collingwood, 32, and Taylor Bousfield, 28, both of Hamilton, Ont., along with 37-year-old Patrick Benson, whose city of residence is unknown, have been arrested by Halton Regional Police following a human trafficking investigation, according to a Sept. 5 news release.

The three are accused of using coercion, manipulation, physical violence, and psychological abuse to control an adult woman, whom they allegedly sexually exploited across Southern Ontario from January to April 2024 for financial gain.

“The Halton Regional Police Service firmly believes that every person has the right to feel safe in our community,” the police force said in the press release. “Victims of violence and/or sexual assault and witnesses are encouraged to contact the Halton Regional Police Service.”

Collingwood was charged with multiple offences, including trafficking in persons; receiving material benefit from trafficking in persons; receiving material benefit from sexual services; exercising control, direction, or influence over a person; recruiting, holding, concealing, or harbouring a person; withholding or destroying identity documents; assault; sexual assault; and forcible confinement.

Bousfield is facing the same charges as Collingwood, except for assault. She is instead accused of knowingly advertising sexual services. Continue…

The police department sent a letter to provincial assistant deputy justice minister Kim Goddard on Sept. 8, requesting a reevaluation of a plea deal for manslaughter charges in connection with the “the horrific murder of a child.” The letter said the accused was expected to plead down from first-degree murder to manslaughter on Sept. 10.
