“As a result of the attack, the Ukrainian ship sank,” the Defense Ministry said.

This was the first successful use of a sea drone to take out a Ukrainian Navy vessel, TASS reported later in the day, citing a UAV expert.

Kiev has confirmed to the media that the vessel was hit.

American journalist James O’Keefe travelled to Nova Scotia to attempt to receive a fine for defying the province’s ban on hiking in the woods, but was ultimately not charged.

O’Keefe, the founder of O’Keefe Media Group, said in an Aug. 26 video on X that he travelled to Sydney, N.S., to purposely try to receive a $25,000 fine after seeing Canadian Armed Forces veteran Jeff Evely receive a $28,872.50 ticket for hiking in the woods in the Sydney area. Evely had went against the provincial orders on Aug.8 in order to protest the law. After receiving the fine, he filed a legal challenge against the forest access ban, with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms representing him in court.

“I thought about doing this, but then I saw Jeff’s story, and then I figured, ‘hey, I should do that,’” O'Keefe said.

O’Keefe said Cape Breton Regional Police officers arrived at the trail after being informed via the province’s phone line that he was hiking on it, but left after around 10 minutes without finding and speaking with O’Keefe.

The video shows that while hiking on the trail, O’Keefe also spoke with a worker from the Department of Natural Resources who was driving an ATV. When O'Keefe asked the worker about the ban and said he wasn’t carrying anything that could start a fire, the worker responded, “If you want to break the law, talk to Trump,” referring to the U.S. president.

The Nova Scotia government implemented a ban on walking, hiking, camping, fishing, or picnicking in any wooded area of the province without a permit due to risks of wildfire. The ban, which was implemented on Aug. 5 and lasts until Oct. 15, can carry fines of up to $25,000. Continue…

Christopher Cooter will take on the role of high commissioner for Canada in the Republic of India, Anand announced on Aug. 28. Cooter has 35 years of diplomatic experience and most recently served as Canada’s Chargé d'affaires to Israel and as Canada’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Mauritius, and Madagascar.

“The appointment of a new High Commissioner reflects Canada’s step-by-step approach to deepening diplomatic engagement and advancing bilateral cooperation with India,” Anand said in an Aug. 28 statement.

“This appointment is an important development toward restoring services for Canadians while strengthening the bilateral relationship to support Canada’s economy.”

India also appointed its new high commissioner to Canada on Aug. 28. Dinesh K. Patnaik, the current ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, is expected to take up the assignment of high commissioner of India to Canada “shortly,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced.

China-Born Canadian Citizen Deported From US Over Illegal Drone Photography of Defence Base

A Canadian citizen has been deported from the United States after receiving probation for illegally photographing a U.S. defence facility with a drone.

A Florida judge has put Brampton, Ont., resident Xiao Guang Pan on probation for 12 months and has ordered him deported back to Canada, according to Global News. Pan was charged earlier this year by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida with three counts of using a drone to photograph defence installations and equipment at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Base (CCSFS) in Florida.

He later pleaded guilty to all three counts, according to a court document filed on June 18. His case comes amid heightened concerns about drone sightings at U.S. military bases and other sensitive sites.

Pan was born in China and moved to Canada in 2001, according to a biography posted by the Brampton Arts Organization. He is described as an “enthusiastic” drone photographer and videographer who previously worked at Best Buy for 18 years until his retirement in 2022.

Pan took nearly 250 drone photos and videos of “vital” military installations at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station between Jan. 5 and 7, according to the court document, which was signed by Pan. That space force base supports the United States’ space launch capabilities, and also hosts space launch complexes and U.S. Navy submarine wharfs.

U.S. federal law prohibits taking unauthorized photographs of vital defence installations or equipment. Continue…

Court Finds WestJet Responsible for Compensating Passenger for 2021 Flight Cancellation

An appeal court has ruled in favour of a passenger whose flight was cancelled by WestJet one hour ahead of departure, upholding a compensation of $1,000.

The Federal Court of Appeal found that WestJet’s decision to cancel a passenger’s 2021 flight from Regina to Ottawa due to a crew shortage was within the airline’s control and was not required for safety purposes as the airline had suggested. The court found the passenger was entitled to $1,000 of compensation for the inconvenience he experienced as a result of the 21-hour delay.

“A disruption resulting from a crew shortage should not be considered to fall within the safety category unless the carrier demonstrates that the disruption could not have been reasonably prevented, or was unavoidable, despite proper planning and did not result from the carrier’s own actions or inactions,” Justice Gerald Heckman of the Federal Court of Appeal wrote in his Aug. 25 reasons for judgement.

WestJet cancelled passenger Owen Lareau’s July 18, 2021, flight from Regina to Toronto, from where he would fly to his final destination of Ottawa, less than an hour before the flight’s departure due to a staffing shortage, the court document says.

The airline rebooked Lareau on a flight to Calgary later that day, where he stayed overnight using vouchers provided by WestJet for his food and accommodation, and then flew to Ottawa the next day. He arrived at his final destination roughly 21 hours later than he was originally scheduled to.

Lareau requested compensation from WestJet for the flight disruption. However, the airline declined his request, saying the disruption was due to crew member availability and was required for safety purposes. Continue…

Quebec Government Says Legislation Coming to Ban Prayer in Public Spaces

The Quebec government says it will introduce legislation to ban prayer in public places to strengthen secularism in the province.

Premier François Legault raised the issue of ending public prayer last year, saying he wanted to send a “clear message to Islamists.” He also said the province could use the notwithstanding clause to protect the legislation from legal challenges.

Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge said that legislation will come this fall.

Roberge called public prayers a “serious and sensitive issue” for Quebec in a statement released on Aug. 28. He noted the government had “expressed its discomfort” with the “increasingly prevalent phenomenon.”

“The Premier of Quebec has given me the mandate to strengthen secularism, and I am firmly committed to fulfilling this mandate diligently,” he said.

“This fall, we will therefore table a bill to strengthen secularism in Quebec, including by prohibiting street prayers.” Continue…
