Had a similar thing happen with an auto lender years ago. Repo agent showed up at my door and demanded that I open the garage because they were here to repossess my car. That car was paid off nearly a year beforehand, and I had the title in my safe. The paperwork that the repo agent handed me wasn't even from the original lender, so it was FUBAR from the start.

I told him that I would not open the garage, and explained the situation to him, and told him that I would have him prosecuted for theft if he tried to take possession of my vehicle.

That lender wound up taking me to court, and losing since they were clearly in the wrong. I counter-sued them for my court costs and my time, and the judge awarded me that back along with $5K in punitive damages.

Banks have too many people in them, and one person doesn't know what the other is doing which opens the door to colossal fuckups like these. Not sure how a bank that you never had any dealings with makes a claim on your property, but it happens.
