President Donald J. Trump Relieves Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook of Her Position

August 26, 2025 | Sundance |

Ms. Lisa Cook has vowed to fight the removal effort of President Trump through her attorneys. “President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so. I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy asI have been doing since 2022,” Cook said in a statement to POLITICO.

On a Truth Social Post, President Trump announced his decision to remove Lisa Cook from her position on the FED board of governors, due to the criminal referral which alleges she falsified information on a mortgage application.

(Letter)

WASHINGTON – […] The Supreme Court has repeatedly backed Trump’s efforts to remove executive branch officials that Congress had attempted to shield from removal without cause — including from agencies that have historically enjoyed arms-length independence. But the justices have made clear they view the Fed as an exception to this deference to the president.

In a May opinion upholding Trump’s removal of a member of the National Labor Relations Board, the high court emphasized that the Federal Reserve “is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entitythat follows in the historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States.”

Trump’s effort to remove Cook, however, will likely hinge on what he is claiming as the basis. The allegation of mortgage fraud has not as yet led to criminal charges or any findings of misconduct. (Guaranteed if she did or got away with one crime, she did more.)

In his letter, Trump sought to justify his legal standing in removing Cook, citing his executive authority.

“The executive power of the United States is vested in me as President and, as President, I have a solemn duty to ensure that the laws of the United States are faithfully executed,” he wrote. “I have determined that faithfully executing the law requires your immediate removal from office.” (more)

Trouble At The Fed: Investigation Into Lisa Cook’s Academic Record Raises Questions

Luke Rosiak andChristopher F. RUFO, April 10, 20241/2

MUST READ whole long article

Lisa D. Cook is one of the world’s most powerful economists. She taught economics at Harvard University and Michigan State University andserved on the Obama administration’s Council of Economic Advisersbefore being appointed, in 2022, to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, which controls the interest rates and money supply of the United States.

Despite her pedigree, questions have long persisted about her academic record.Her publication historyisremarkably thinfor a tenured professor, and her published work largely focuseson race activismrather than onrigorous, quantitative economics. Her nomination to the Fed required Vice President Kamala Harris to cast a tie-breaking vote;

The quality of her scholarship has also received criticism. Her most heralded work, 2014’s “Violence and Economic Activity: Evidence from African American Patents, 1870 to 1940,” examined the number of patents by black inventors in the past, concluding that the number plummeted in 1900because of lynchings and discrimination. Otherresearchers soon discovered that the reasonfor the sudden drop in 1900 was thatone of the databases Cook relied on stopped collecting data in that year.

The true number of black patents, one subsequent study found, might be as much as70 times greater than Cook’s figure, effectively debunking the study’s premise.

Cook also seems tohave consistently inflated her own credentials. In 2022, investigative journalist Christopher Brunet pointed out that, despite billing herself as a macroeconomist, Cook had never published a peer-reviewed macroeconomics article and had misrepresented her publication history in her CV,claiming that she had published an article in the journal American Economic Review. In truth, the article was published in American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings, a less prestigious, non-peer-reviewed magazine.

An exclusive City Journal and Daily Wire investigation reveals additional facts thatcast new doubt on Cook’s seriousness as a scholar.

In a series of academic papersspanning morethan a decade, Cook appears to have copied language from other scholars without proper quotation and duplicated her own work and that of coauthors in multiple academic journals without proper attribution. Both practices appear to violate Michigan State University’s own written academic standards….

We will review several examples which, taken together, establish a pattern of careless scholarship at best or, at worst, academic misconduct...

She does something similar in her October 2021 paper, “Closing the Innovation Gap In Pink and Black,” which, despite significant government subsidies and years spent on it by Cook, summarized the work of researchers Charles Becker, Cecilia Elena Rouse, and Mingyu Chenby copying roughly 70 words without quotes.

This appears to be a violation of the standards in Michigan State University’s guidebook, which states that authors must paraphrase or add direct quotations to verbatim passages. “…Cook also appears to have copied language from her own prior papers, or those of coauthors, without proper attribution…

In a 2018 paper, “Rural Segregation and Racial Violence,” Cook appears as the lead author, with scholars Trevon Logan and John Parman as coauthors. But this papersimplyduplicates word-for-wordmuch of Logan and Parman’s prior workwithout Cook. For example, the year prior, Logan and Parman published an original paper, with the following language:…

Does the deliberate recycling of old material, including material from coauthors, constitute academic misconduct? It is true that journalists, for example, often adapt previous reporting into a compilation or a book. But the standard in academia is more rigorous. According to the Michigan State University guidebook, republishing identical materialacross multiple journals, without proper attribution, appears to be a violation of the rule against “self-plagiarism.” The standard is that scholars cannot use copied language “regardless of whether [they] are or are not the author of the source of the copied text or idea.”

What shouldthe consequences be for this kind of academic misconduct at Michigan State…,

Cook is no stranger to mobilizing such punishments against others. In 2020, she participated in the attempteddefenestrationof esteemed University of Chicagoeconomist Harald Uhligfor thecrimeof publicly opposing the “defund the police” movement. She called for Uhlig’s removal from the classroom, claiming that he had made an insensitive remark about Martin Luther King, Jr. (The university closed its own inquiry after concluding that there was “not a basis” to investigate further.)

Uhlig, in a 2022 op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, asked the pertinent question:Under the leadership of an ideologue such as Lisa Cook, would the Fed continue to pursue its mandate, or succumb to left-wing activism?

Time will tell if the gears of justice turn against Lisa Cook, or if repeated academic misconduct, defended by some as mere sloppiness or isolated mistakes, is fast becoming an acceptable part of the academic order—as long as the alleged author of that behavior is favored by the powerful.

Nazi and porn images screened at livestream of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's speech at University of Pittsburgh

TOI Tech Desk

On Thursday, a scheduled speech by Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook at the University of Pittsburgh was abruptly disrupted when the internet stream of the event was hijacked by unknown individuals.

The attackers displayed a series of racist remarks, Nazi symbols, and pornographic content on the viewing screen, forcing organizers to terminate the online broadcast. While the in-person speech reportedly continued, the virtual intrusion significantly affected the public viewing experience and disrupted the planned question-and-answer session that was to follow.Lisa Cook, who made history as the first Black woman appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, was speaking on economic and policy matters when the digital attack occurred.

The incident highlights the continuing vulnerability of online public events, particularly high-profile governmental or institutional sessions, to malicious intrusions known as “Zoom bombing.” This is not the first time a Federal Reserve official has been targeted in such a manner, drawing attention to the growing need for improved cybersecurity measures in virtual forums.

Hate symbols and porn hijack Federal Governor’s university speech

The disruption took place just a few minutes into Governor Cook's prepared remarks. As the online stream was underway, offensive content including hate speech, Nazi imagery, and explicit pornography began to appear on the viewer screens. According to a spokesperson from the Federal Reserve, the in-person portion of the speech proceeded uninterrupted, although the online experience was swiftly terminated to prevent further exposure to the material.

Poll

How serious do you think this incident is in terms of academic integrity?

The event had been organized by the University of Pittsburgh as part of a broader discussion series focusing on economic policy and governance.

Cook’s speech was expected to provide insights into the Federal Reserve’s role in addressing inflation, financial stability, and broader economic equity concerns. The attack, however, forced organizers to curtail the online interaction component of the event, notably shortening or eliminating the audience question-and-answer session that was scheduled to follow her remarks.

Previous incidents involving Federal Reserve officials

Governor Lisa Cook is the second member of the Federal Reserve Board to experience such a cyber intrusion during a public engagement.

In March 2023, Governor Christopher Waller was the target of a similar Zoom bombingincident during a virtual-only event. That session had to be canceled entirely when pornographic content flooded the video stream, making it impossible to proceed with the planned discussion. Both incidents underscore the vulnerabilities inherent in conducting public or semi-public online events, especially those featuring high-profile figures.

The recurrence of such disruptions also raises concerns about whether these events are being specifically targeted due to the participants' roles, backgrounds, or public visibility….

This is all you need to Know about Lisa D Cook, she’s a racist

published by IMF long article

The Accidental Economist

DECEMBER 2020

Michigan State University’s Lisa D. Cook shows how racism and sexism hurt us all

Lisa D. Cook was two or three years old when the issue of race first hit her—literally. Kids at her Georgia nursery school called her a racial epithet and attacked her, leaving a lifelong scar above her right eye.

“It wasn’t until much later that I understood that that word was associated with violence, with racial violence, and its true history,” says Cook. Since then, the economist has embraced the issue of race to pursue research at the intersection of the African-American lived experience and macroeconomics.

In a profession lambasted for its sexism and racism, Cook stands out for her gender, her ethnicity, and her chosen areas of research. Among her conclusions is that racism and sexism create a huge drag on the world’s largest economy.

Against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, her findings have forced the issues of race and gender higher up the economics agenda, challenging a profession under fire on both scores. She has also become known for her work on development, financial institutions and markets, and economic history.

“Lisa has been willing to take the risk of not getting the professional plaudits she deserves by pursuing research in areas that have not been plumbed by anyone yet,” says William A. Darity Jr., a professor of economics and African American studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. “People are now acknowledging the significance of her contributions.”

Now a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Cook has published papers on subjects ranging from the impact of lynchings in slowing overall economic activity, to how having a distinctively black name positively affects longevity, to the economic loss of excluding African Americans and women from the innovation process.

Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree from the historically Black Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, a second bachelor’s as a Marshall Scholar from Oxford University, and coursework toward a master’s in philosophy from the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal. She earned her doctorate in economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Earlier this year, speaking via video link during protests following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, Cook considers whether this year’s events will differ from previous, successive protests.

“It possibly could, because of the strange confluence of events, and serendipity,” she says. “Because people are locked down, they have had to pay attention. So I think this time is different.”

Rare earth prices hit two-year peak after MP Materials stops China shipments

Eric Onstad and Amy Lv

By Eric Onstad and Amy Lv

LONDON/BEIJING (Reuters) -Prices of two rare earth elements needed for super-strong magnets have surged to their highest in more than two years after U.S. miner MP Materials (MP) stopped raw material exports to leading magnet maker China amid rising demand.

China dominates the global supply chain for rare earths, accounting for 90% of refining capacity and around 70% of mined output, but the U.S. has pushed back, signing a deal with its biggest producer MP in July to refine its output domestically.

MP's shipments had in the past three years fed 7%-9% of China's oxide production from mine output of rare earths neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) - vital to magnets that power electric vehicles, wind turbines and defence equipment - consultancy Adamas said.

NYSE - Nasdaq Real Time Price • USD

As of 10:23:57 AM EDT. Market Open.

"MP's shipments were a very material portion of NdPr oxide supply for China's factories, so that's left a big void," said Ryan Castilloux, managing director of Adamas.

The Chinese price of NdPr oxide, regarded as a benchmark, has jumped to 632,000 yuan per metric ton or $88 per kg, the strongest since March 2023, from $63 on July 9.

Its 40% rally after several years of weakness will boost prospects for mine projects seeking investment outside China as the West seeks to wean off reliance on Beijing.

Boosting the West's rare earth output became more urgent after China clamped down on exports in April amid a trade war with the U.S., prompting some auto plants to shut.

The U.S. government announced a ground-breaking deal with MP last month stipulating the company halt shipments to China. It also offered price support to MP for the NdPr it produces based on $110 per kg, at the time about twice the Chinese price.

MP had paused shipments to China in April due to high tariffs, but any shortage was masked by weakness in magnet demand due to Chinese export curbs, analysts said. U.S. rare earth ore supply to China slid in May and hit zero in June before jumping last month, probably due to the final MP shipments, they added.

China's exports of rare earth magnets recovered to hit a six-month high in July after Beijing eased its export controls, having agreed a series of deals with the U.S. and Europe.

PEAK MANUFACTURING SEASON

NdPr prices have been weighed down by oversupply in recent years and in March last year, they sank to 345,000 yuan, the weakest since November 2020.

Their recent gains have also been driven by a rebound in demand.

"China is currently in its peak manufacturing season for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and consumer electronics. This cyclical uptick in demand has put additional pressure on available NdPr supply," said Neha Mukherjee, research manager for rare earths at consultancy Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

More postal services pause shipments to U.S. with 'de minimis' loophole set to expire

The crackdown on small-dollar imports has left businesses and consumers scrambling.

Postal services in Japan and Switzerland are the latest to pause shipments to the United States this week, days before an exemption for certain import taxes is about to expire.

The loophole, known as “de minimis,” has allowed goods worth less than $800 to enter the United States duty-free since 2016. President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month to abolish the practice. It is set to end Friday.

The change has rocked small businesses and consumers, leaving many concerned about shipping backlogs and higher costs. Some business owners have said on social media they will be forced to close up shop.

“There is so much uncertainty about how these tariffs are going to be collected,” said Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief of Investopedia. “Who will collect these tariffs? What products, if any, will be exempt from these tariffs? And that just adds more uncertainty into an already very confusing picture around tariffs and how they’re going to impact us here in the United States.”

The change means effective Friday, goods coming into the U.S. from abroad will be slapped with country-specific tariffs. For an $800 item coming in from a country with a tariff rate of 25% or more (like China, Brazil, India, Switzerland or Canada), that could amount to at least $200 in extra costs just to bring the product into the U.S.

Under the new rules, letters and personal gifts worth less than $100 will still be duty-free.

The White House said ending the de minimis exemption would help combat “escalating deceptive shipping practices, illegal material, and duty circumvention,” claiming some shippers had “abused” the exemption to send illicit drugs such as fentanyl into the U.S.

The de minimis exemption had also been a focal point of the administration’s trade spat with China. Chinese-linked e-commerce companies like Temu and Shein surged in popularity among American consumers by directly shipping cheap clothes and goods under the de minimis threshold. Despite the ongoing conversation between the U.S. and China on a framework trade agreement, the administration ended the de minimis exemption for low-value imports from China and Hong Kong in early May, prompting Temu and Shein to switch to a “local fulfillment model” to avoid price hikes.

On Monday, Swiss Post and Japan Post announced they would soon suspend shipments bound for the United States. Postal services in Australia, India, New Zealand, the U.K. and other parts of Europe have said they will also stop shipping parcels to the States this week.

Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany, both divisions of DHL, said Friday it will stop accepting parcels destined for the U.S. starting Monday, saying that “key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out.”

Many European postal services say they are pausing shipments now because they cannot guarantee the goods will enter the United States before Friday.

Other delivery services said they would try to pick up the slack. “Our priority is supporting our customers and helping them navigate through the changes going into effect for U.S.-bound shipments on Aug. 29,” FedEx said.

(Countries trying to punish U.S. for tariffs, they should watch out for PDJT’s action)

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

As the President of the United States, I will stand up to Countries that attack our incredible American Tech Companies. Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology. They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China's largest Tech Companies. This must end, and end NOW! With this TRUTH, I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations, on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country's Exports to the U.S.A., and institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips. America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the “piggy bank” nor the “doormat” of the World any longer. Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies or, consider the consequences! Thank you for your attention to this matter.
