A way to start with Linux:
I use Linode for my Unix needs.
Linode is one of several companies who sell Virtual Private Servers (VPS).
The actual device is at a data center somewhere.
This one is $5 per month, and provides me with a full Debian Linux installation.
It is accessed by an SSH client on my Android tablet, which means I use the traditional Command Line Interface, which is typing in text commands to get it to do things.
I use it to experiment and learn Unix, soon to compile programs for Raspberry Pi, to scrape and store Q stuff, to save YouTube vids, and to serve web pages when I want.
I have never tried a windows type graphical interface, don't think that would work well.
This may be the best, least technical route to learn Unix, rather than start by installing it on one's own home machine.
