Five Minutes in Orbit

August 29, 2025

Taken June 22, 2025

The scenery changes quickly for the crew of the International Space Station. Traveling at a speed of 5 miles (8 kilometers) per second, the station completes one orbit of Earth about every 90 minutes.

This time-lapse video offers a flavor of the earthly and celestial phenomena visible from about 400 kilometers (250 miles) above the surface in just over five minutes of travel time.

It consists of 315 photographs taken by an astronaut aboard the station as it orbited over the eastern Pacific Ocean and North America on June 22, 2025.

Mexico comes into view in the first part of the video. The land is mostly dark in the early morning hours (about 2:30 a.m. Central Standard Time), but lights appear in developed areas and illuminate clouds from below.

Some frames capture flashes of lightning. Later in the video, lights along the U.S. Gulf Coast and across southern states appear, and sunrise approaches.

Above the lower atmosphere, where most of the planet’s weather occurs, a diffuse layer of green and orange arcs along the horizon.

This band of light is airglow, produced when sunlight strikes atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere and causes them to eject photons.

Stars fill the blackness of space above Earth’s limb, forming the backdrop for the appearance of several bright objects within our solar system. The Moon rises in the center of the scene in the waning crescent phase.

Although the side facing Earth was only 13 percent lit, the crescent cannot be discerned in these images because of its relative brightness and the camera’s exposure settings.

Shortly after moonrise, Venus emerges above the horizon to the right of the Moon. Objects on the left side of the video moving parallel to the horizon are satellites, which sometimes appear in astronaut time-lapses prior to sunrises.

Though the Moon appears exceptionally bright in this video, some astronaut photos depict its varied terrain. People on Earth’s surface can also observe these lunar details with the naked eye, through binoculars, or on a virtual tour, among other methods.

International Observe the Moon Night offers many opportunities for lunar science and exploration. The next one occurs on October 4, 2025, when the Moon will be around first quarter and shadows will enhance its cratered surface.

Astronaut puts his mad video game skills to the test | On the International Space Station Aug. 25-29, 2025

August 29, 2025

The seven astronauts and cosmonauts that comprise the second half of the International Space Station's Expedition 73 crew focused this week on a new shipment of supplies and conducting the time-sensitive science that arrived along with the cargo.

They also prepared for an upcoming re-boost of the orbital complex's altitude in orbit.

Before becoming an astronaut, Jonny Kim was a Navy SEAL and a medical doctor. Now aboard the International Space Station, he has revealed he was a gamer, too, and able to put some his boyhood skills to good use.

"Growing up, I played a lot of video games — and while I still enjoy gaming with my kids, time is scarcer these days," wrote Kim in a social media post on Wednesday (Aug. 27).

"This demo brought me right back, blending elements of real-time strategy, RPGs, and first-person play into something very real."

Working with the Surface Avatar team at the European Space Agency (ESA), Kim was able to test how teleoperations could be of use to future missions on the moon and Mars.

"A joystick and advanced robotic arm controller let me mimic finger and wrist movements with precision. A heads-up display kept me informed with battery levels, location data, and quick access to either an AI assistant or ground teams," he wrote.

"I could enlarge a mini-map to see each robot’s perspective, like a 'fog of war' in strategy games, and send parallel commands to different units.

With the fine arm controls, I could enter into the perspective of a humanoid robot to manipulate the environment, whether moving science samples or shifting a rock that blocked the way."

Kim said his favorite demo was with a rover that had a smaller, deployable unit that could get into tight areas, such as caves — "a feature that felt straight out of a game but with real scientific potential."

"It was not just a technology demonstration, but a glimpse into how play, imagination and innovation intersect to shape the future of exploration," Kim wrote.

Science status

Among the research that was conducted by the Expedition 73 crew aboard the space station this week was:

MVP Cell-07 — Having arrived aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on Monday (Aug. 25), one of the space station's newest science experiments quickly got the attention of Expedition 73 flight engineer Zena Cardman with NASA.

She set up the Maturation of Vascularized Liver Tissue Construct in Zero Gravity experiment in a portable microgravity glovebag to begin studying how the blood vessels in 3D-printed liver tissue reacts to being weightless.

Ultrasound 2 — Kimiya Yui of JAXA and Mike Fincke of NASA worked together to test a possible countermeasure to the redistirbution of liquids from the feet to the head in microgravity.

Fincke wore a specially designed thigh cuff, while Yui recorded the data from electrodes applied to Fincke's chest.

Station keeping

The Expedition 73 crewmates also took part in activities to maintain the space station's systems and prepare for future research.

CRS-33 — NASA astronaut Jonny Kim worked on unloading some of the 5,000 pounds (2,300 kilograms) of supplies delivered on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on Monday (Aug. 25).

Fellow flight engineers Mike Fincke and Kimiya Yui removed and restowed frozen science samples from Dragon to the freezers on the space station.

NASA engineers at Mission Control in Houston also took remote control of the space station's Candarm2 robotic arm to remove and inspect a reboost kit that was launched in the unpressurized trunk of SpaceX's CRS-33 Dragon.

The hardware will later be used to maintain and raise the orbital complex's altitude.

Astronaut activity

"Boop! We have a new Dragon at the bow of our International Space Station," wrote Expedition 73 flight engineer Zena Cardman of NASA in a social media post on Tuesday (Aug. 26).

The commercial space capsule arrived at the orbiting laboratory on Monday with more than 5,000 pounds (2,300 kilograms) of supplies on board.

"We’ve been hard at work unpacking ever since. Welcome, SpaceX CRS-33!" wrote Cardman.

By the numbers

As of Friday (Aug. 15), there are 7 people aboard the International Space Station:

Expedition 73 commander Sergey Ryzhikov of Roscosmos; fellow cosmonauts Alexey Zubritsky and Oleg Platonov; Jonny Kim, Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke of NASA; and Kimiya Yui of JAXA, all flight engineers.

There are two docked crew spacecraft: SpaceX's Dragon "Endeavour" attached to the zenith port of the Harmony module and Roscosmos' Soyuz MS-27 attached to the Earth-facing port of the Prichal node.

There are three docked cargo spacecraft: Roscosmos' Progress MS-30 (91P) attached to the aft port of the Zvezda service module, and Progress MS-31 (92P) docked to the space-facing port of the Poisk module.

SpaceX's CRS-33 Dragon spacecraft is docked to the forward port of Harmony Node 2. As of Friday, the space station has been continuously crewed for 24 years and 9 months and 27 days.

An Engineer Says He’s Found a Way to Overcome Earth’s Gravity

Aug 28, 2025 2:39 PM EDT

In 2001, British Electrical Engineer Roger Shawyer first introduced the “impossible drive,” known as the EmDrive.

It was called “impossible” because its creator purported that the drive was reactionless, meaning no propellant required—in other words, it defied the known laws of physics (specifically, the conservation of momentum).

As with anything that appears to thumb its nose at Newton and Einstein, scientists raised more than a few eyebrows, and two decades of testing eventually boiled down to an inevitable (and somewhat predictable) conclusion in 2021:

the EmDrive was bunk. But that’s the nature of the scientific method—take a seemingly impossible idea, put it through rigorous testing, and hopefully get to an unassailable conclusion (or new discoveries that lead in other directions).

While at NASA, Charles Buhler helped establish the Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center in Florida—a very important lab that basically ensures rockets don’t explode.

Now, as co-founder of the space company Exodus Propulsion Technologies, Buhler told the website The Debrief that they’ve created a drive powered by a “New Force” outside our current known laws of physics, giving the propellant-less drive enough boost to overcome gravity.

“The most important message to convey to the public is that a major discovery occurred,” Buhler told The Debrief.

“This discovery of a New Force is fundamental in that electric fields alone can generate a sustainable force onto an object and allow center-of-mass translation of said object without expelling mass.”

Buhler stressed that this work is unaffiliated with NASA, and that he recently presented his findings at the Alternative Propulsion Energy Conference (APEC), which is a club of engineers and enthusiasts eager to find ways to overcome the limitations of gravity and physics—and not always with the most scientifically sound methods.

In an interview with APEC’s co-founder Tim Ventura, Buhler explained how his background in electrostatics led to the discovery.

He says his team—made up of people from NASA, Blue Origin, and the Air Force—investigated propellant-less drives for decades before arriving at electrostatics.

For years, their devices produced negligible thrust, but saw increases with each new iteration. This culminated in 2023, when this “New Force”-powered drive generated enough thrust to overcome Earth’s gravity.

“Essentially, what we’ve discovered is that systems that contain an asymmetry in either electrostatic pressure or some kind of electrostatic divergent field can give a system of a center of mass a non-zero force component,” Buhler told The Debrief.

“So, what that basically means is that there’s some underlying physics that can essentially place force on an object should those two constraints be met.”

Obviously Buhler’s claims are pretty “woah, if true,” but the history of propellant-less drives is filled with seemingly positive results that are eventually dashed upon the rocks of scientific reality.

For the EmDrive, hopes for the device skyrocketed after NASA’s Eagleworks team, which is dedicated to investigating new forms of propulsion (i.e. warp drives), claimed to measure thrust from the “impossible” drive in 2016.

However, subsequent studies—including an exhaustive (no pun intended) one at the Dresden University of Technology—found zero thrust.

Before any alternative propulsion enthusiasts should start popping corks, rigorous, third-party research will have to verify the results again and again.

While it’s not impossible that Buhler et. al stumbled across some unknown quirk of physics, it’s an extremely unlikely outcome.

For now, let’s call it an “improbable engine.”

Russian space enterprise RSC Energia on verge of collapse, according to its CEO

  1. August 2025

Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia, the leading Russian enterprise in the field of manned space exploration, is on the verge of collapse, according to reporting in the Russian press.

A 26 August report by Russian news outlet Gazeta.Ru quoted an internal memo by RSC Energia CEO Igor Maltsev, posted on the occasion of the enterprise’s 79th anniversary, in which he predicted its probable closure.

Describing the situation as critical, Maltsev referred to “multimillion-dollar debts”, adding that “interest on loans are ‘eating up’ the budget, many processes are ineffective [and that] a significant part of the team has lost motivation and a sense of shared responsibility”.

In his memo Maltsev wrote that “all major projects … have missed deadlines” and called on colleagues to stop “lying to themselves and others” about the true state of affairs and to start “fighting for the enterprise”.

He did rule out “closing the corporation” due to “the inability to function normally” and pay salaries.

He called for “discipline” and “co-ordinated action.” from all employees, but admitted that “pulling the company out is a task beyond the realm of miracles”.

Founded in 1946 under the leadership of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev, RSC Energia developed the first Soviet ballistic missiles, as well as the Sputnik, Vostok, Voskhod, Luna, Molniya and Soyuz family of space vehicles.

However, a crisis in the Russian space industry has been worsened as a consequence of the Ukraine War, with Russia’s state corporation for space activities, Roscosmos, which comes under RSC Energia, becoming subject to international sanctions and losing almost all of its foreign customers.

A 27 August report by The Moscow Times stated that RSC Energia has accumulated RUB 10.5 billion (EUR 110 million) in net losses over the past 10 years and that the company’s total debt as of 30 June 2025 was RUB 168.4 billion.

According to data for 2024 from the website payloadspace.com, Russia made just 17 orbital launch attempts that year, compared to 145 for the United States and 68 for China.

US Deports Canadian Citizen Accused of Spying on Space Force Facility

August 29, 2025 17:17:03 IST

A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin has been deported from the United States after being convicted of illegally using a drone to photograph a US defence facility.

Xiao Guang Pan, a resident of Brampton, Ontario, was sentenced by a Florida judge to 12 months of probation along with mandatory deportation to Canada, according to The Epoch Times.

Earlier this year, Pan was charged by the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida with three offences related to using a drone to capture images of defence installations and equipment at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS).

The Accused later admitted guilt to all three charges

He later admitted guilt to all three charges, as indicated in a court document filed on June 18, cited in the TET report. Pan, who was born in China, relocated to Canada in 2001, according to a biography provided by the Brampton Arts Organisation.

He is characterised as an “enthusiastic” drone photographer and videographer and previously worked at Best Buy for 18 years until his retirement in 2022.

Between January 5 and 7, Pan captured nearly 250 drone photos and videos of “vital” military installations at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, as noted in the court document signed by Pan.

This space force base supports the US’s space launch capabilities and features space launch complexes as well as US Navy submarine wharves.

Under US federal law, unauthorised photography of significant defence installations or equipment is strictly prohibited, as highlighted by the TET report.

NASA identified drone activity in the vicinity of the space force base on January 7 and notified local authorities, who subsequently discovered Pan operating a drone, a Mavic 3 Pro model manufactured by the Chinese company DJI, from a nearby parking lot.

An investigation of Pan’s drone and phone revealed that he had taken 243 photographs and 13 videos of the military structures at the space force station.

“At no time did Pan seek or obtain permission to capture images or videos of CCSFS,” states the court document.

The structures documented in Pan’s photos and videos included space launch complexes, a payload processing facility, mission control and power distribution systems, security checkpoints, and fuel and munitions bunkers.

Pan’s situation has been investigated by several US security and intelligence entities, which include Homeland Security Investigations, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to the TET report. (Inputs from ANI)

Space Force’s first Officer Training Course graduates at Peterson SFB

Aug. 28, 2025

The U.S. Space Force reached a historic milestone Aug. 28 when the inaugural class of Guardian officers graduated from the Officer Training Course at Peterson Space Force Base.

More than 80 officers completed the year-long program, marking a new era in how the Space Force trains and develops its commissioned force.

OTC is now the service’s initial leader development course, designed to produce a multidisciplinary officer corps with a broad grasp of mission concepts and the foundational skills to identify, plan, integrate and synchronize effects across the full spectrum of space operations.

“Officers are the Space Force’s commanders, leaders, planners, and strategists. I need you to be the big-picture, multi-disciplinary thinkers,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman speaking at the graduation ceremony.

“OTC has given you a broad foundation across all the Space Force’s operational disciplines. This is a brand-new approach for us, and it is an important pivot from the old days.”

The course combines training in satellite, intelligence, and cyber operations and provides exposure to acquisitions to deliver a single, integrated learning experience.

OTC is part of a broader effort to redesign how the Space Force trains and develops its personnel.

Space Training and Readiness Command has already launched a course for new civilian employees and is creating a tailored pipeline for enlisted Guardians aligned with the service’s codified work roles.

“This course is another step toward institutionalizing the training requirements all Guardians will need to succeed,” said Maj. Gen. James E. Smith, commander of STARCOM.

“Whether they’re officer, enlisted or civilian Guardians, it’s important that we have training pipelines and curriculum that prepare our forces not just for the threats we see today, but for emerging threats we may not anticipate.

These training foundations set the stage for their ability to adapt to any situation and win in combat.” OTC graduation with Guardians in uniform. Photos feature pinning ceremony and officers in their formal blues.

Guardians, instructors, and guests gather during the Officer Training Course graduation at Peterson Space Force Base, Colo., Aug. 28, 2025.

The Space Force has approximately 14,000 military and civilian Guardians, including nearly 5,000 uniformed officers. OTC will ultimately train more than a third of all Guardians.

Approximately 60 percent of graduates will begin their first operational assignment in the Colorado Springs area. (U.S. Space Force photo by Isaac Blancas)

Each OTC graduate is now headed to their first operational assignment at units worldwide. They are fully qualified to serve in cyber, intelligence, and space operations roles, and will also have opportunities to pursue Force Modernization assignments in the future.

OTC graduates received an interim badge to mark their transition to a Guardian-first, mission-integrated officer corps capable of leading across the full spectrum of space operations.

A permanent design is in development and will replace the interim version once approved and fielded.

“Standing up a year-long training course so quickly was a tremendous team effort, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built,” said Lt. Col. Liam Conley, 319th Combat Training Squadron commander.

“Now, we have a foundational course that gives every new officer the skills needed to lead in the fight from day one. This first year of OTC exemplifies the ‘Can Do’ Guardian attitude in pursuit of combat credibility.”

Ukrainian missile launcher destroyed in Russian strike – MOD

29 Aug, 2025 14:17

The Russian Defense Ministry has released video footage showing the moment of impact of what it claims was an Iskander strike that destroyed a Ukrainian long-range cruise missile launcher.

The strike reportedly took place in part of Russia’s Zaporozhye Region that is controlled by Kiev. According to the ministry, the ten Ukrainian servicemen operating the equipment were killed in the strike.

The Defense Ministry identified the Ukrainian launcher as a Neptune missile system.

A separate video posted Thursday by a Telegram military channel appeared to show the same incident but contained indications that the crew may have managed to fire at least one missile before being hit.

The Neptune missile, first introduced in 2015 as an anti-ship weapon, can be fired from different platforms, including ground-mobile launchers, and can carry up to four projectiles.

Prior to the escalation of the conflict with Russia, Ukrainian officials had promoted it as a potential way to threaten the Crimean Bridge.

Ukrainian media recently reported that an upgraded “long Neptun” variant of the missile had been developed that has an extended range of up to 1,000km, far above the original 300km.

Ukrainian drone сauses fire near Vladimir Putin's Black Sea palace and winery, media reports

August 29, 2025 6:24 pm

Parts of a Ukrainian drone have fallen on a forest near a palace and winery on the Black Sea used by Russian President Vladimir Putin, causing a fire, Russian independent media the Insider reported on Aug. 29.

The fire started as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack on Aug. 28 near a village close to Gelendzhik, a Russian resort town, according to the reports.

By the morning of Aug. 29, the had grown to an area 41,5 hectares (102,5 acres), according to Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

The village is located 10 kilometers (6,21 miles) from Putin's palace on Cape Idokopas. According to Important Stories, the fire may have broken out 3-4 kilometers (2 miles) from the palace.

Another fire was started less than a kilometer from Putin's Krinitsa winery. Both the winery and the palace, appeared in investigation by Alexey Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation in 2021, sparking major protests in Russian cities.

The Idokopas Palace, built between 2005 and 2010, has gained notoriety its huge cost and lavish interiors — including a private theater, a game room with slot machines, a pole-dancing lounge, a casino, and an "aqua-disco."

According to another investigation published by Russian opposition meda Project in May 2024, entertainment zones in the palace had been eliminated, replaced by a spacious hall dedicated to military paintings and a luxurious palace chapel that included an icon of Saint Vladimir, an iconostasis, and a wooden throne.

Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted Russian infrastructure through sabotage operations and drone strikes throughout the full-scale war, aiming to destroy Russia's logistical capabilities in supplying the Russian military with fuel materials, ammunition, and personnel.

Oryol Hit by Ukrainian Drones in Rare Strike on Usually Peaceful Central Russian City

Aug. 29, 2025, 6:03 pm

Ukrainian drones hit the usually peaceful Russian city of Oryol early on Friday morning, Aug. 29 in a possible retaliation attack for a deadly Russian strike the night before.

The Ukrainian strike against Russia’s Oryol was less than 20 aircraft, observers said. Four Russian civilians reportedly were injured. The city is some 220-240 kilometers (137-149 miles) from probable Ukrainian drone launch sites.

Russia’s military on Thursday used bombers, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, “hypersonic” missiles, and more than 560 drones in attacks focusing on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

A reported 23 Ukrainians, among them four children, were killed and more than 50 civilians were injured.

Four Russian civilians were injured in the Ukrainian attack against Oryol, local officials said.

A relatively wealthy industrial city, Oryol (Russian: Орел = “eagle”), until Friday morning had almost been untouched by the Russia-Ukraine War.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Ukrainian drones had struck around the city only twice, in December 2023 and February 2024.

Both air raids were less than ten aircraft attacking the city’s oil refinery, news reports at the time said. The last time air raid sirens had been turned on in Oryol was in May, but no drones ever appeared, the independent Astra news agency reported on Friday

Reports of Ukrainian drones in the air and heading towards the city of 300,000+ flooded social media shortly before midnight. Attacks by a reported 12-17 aircraft over about 30 minutes of strikes was thoroughly recorded by social media and security cameras at locations across the city.

Content uploaded by Oryol social media users showed Ukrainian Liutiy long-range drones flying horizontally at around 100 meters (328 feet) altitude before sharply diving to impact on the ground. Residents reported hearing between 10 and 17 explosions.

There was little evidence of Russian air defenses engaging the Ukrainian aircraft. One video showed a drone impacting and detonating against the upper story of a high-rise building.

Over the night according to a Russia defense ministry statement, air defense forces claimed they shot down a total 54 Ukrainian drones violating airspace in 10 Russian regions, as well as over the Russia-occupied Crimea peninsula and the Black Sea.

The official Kremlin announcement listed only four shoot-downs over Oryol.

Some Russian social media reported the Ukrainian drones appeared to be targeting an Oryol airfield used by a military helicopter unit, but there was no confirmation of that. Post-strike video showed a fire burning in a city residential district.

An announcement by the Oryol region governor’s office said all the Ukrainian drones were shot down. Four Oryol residents were injured and four buildings – an apartment high-rise, two private homes, and an administrative building were damaged by falling debris, the local news channel Zhest Oryel reported.

The news platform Novosti Orel I Oblast reported police had cordoned off the site of one of the Ukrainian drone strikes in the vicinity of Polesskaya street.

The road is in the city’s western Sovetskiy district, a mixed residential-industrial region containing apartment buildings, three universities, and a hospital. Ukraine, since August has targeted Russia’s energy infrastructure.

Potentially, two corporate properties in the district – the head office of the regional electricity and power company Orlovsiy Energosbyt, and the regional headquarters of the Russian natural gas giant Gazprom – would be typical targets for a Ukrainian drone strike.

Russian strike planners at times have seemed to seek maximum Ukrainian civilian casualties at times by targeting apartment buildings, crowded train stations, hospitals, subway stations and public gatherings.

However, Moscow spokesmen maintain Russia only attacks military targets. The bloodiest single Russian attack on Ukraine probably was on the village of Hroza in Kharkiv Oblast on Oct. 5, 2023.

Missiles hit a cafe and grocery store where civilians had gathered for a memorial service, killing 51 people, including a six-year-old child, and injuring six.

The strike wiped out approximately one-fifth of the village’s population.

Ukrainian strike planners seem to have been less willing to risk civilian casualties and, for the most part, have targeted Russian military units, along with logistics nodes or energy production infrastructure.

Russian air defense systems, bomber aircraft and senior officers have been priority targets. In August, Ukraine launched a drone strike campaign visibly targeting oil and gas production and transportation infrastructure in western Russia.

After four weeks of bombardment about 20% of crude oil processing capacity in the entire Russian Federation was offline because of damage from drone hits and fires set by them, market observers have said.

According to Friday’s Russian news reports, the production cuts have spiked prices and even empty pumps at gas stations as far away as the Russian Far East.

Ukraine claims strike on Russian S-400 radar system in occupied Crimea, shows footage

August 29, 2025 10:41 am

Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) struck a Russian 91N6E radar system, part of the S-400 Triumph air defense system, in occupied Crimea overnight on Aug. 28, HUR reported.

"Another (Russian) Triumph on the peninsula has been 'blinded'," the agency said on Aug. 29. Its statement was accompanied by a black-and-white drone footage that purports to show the successful strike against the Russian system.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims.

The attack marks the latest in a series of reported strikes targeting components of the S-400 Triumph system. In late June, Ukrainian drones struck air defense equipment in Crimea, damaging radar units and other parts of the system.

Russia's modern S-400 Triumph air defense system is estimated to cost around $1.2 billion. It is capable of intercepting a range of aerial targets, from cruise missiles to drones and aircraft.

Ukraine has previously carried out successful attacks on S-400 radar systems in Crimea — a southern Ukrainian peninsula occupied by Russia since 2014 — and in Russian regions, including Belgorod Oblast.

HUR claimed a successful drone attack against a Russian Buyan-M-class small missile ship off the Crimean coast on Aug. 28, claiming that the vessel was forced to retreat after the attack.

Ukraine calls emergency UN Security Council meeting over Russian strike on Kyiv

August 29, 2025 12:33 pm

The U.N. Security Council will convene on Aug. 29 at Ukraine's request to discuss a recent deadly Russian attack against Kyiv, Ukrinform news agency reported.

During the meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, the Ukrainian delegation in New York will brief the international community about the scale of destruction and urge an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.

Russia launched a barrage of around 630 drones and missiles against Ukraine overnight on Aug. 28, killing at least 23 people in Kyiv, including four children, and injuring over 60.

The attack took place amid now months-long efforts by the U.S. to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, even as the Kremlin continues to reject calls for a ceasefire.

European officials have broadly denounced the recent strike — which also damaged the building of the EU mission in Kyiv — as evidence of Moscow's disregard for peace efforts.

In turn, the White House drew a parallel between the deadly attack against civilians in Kyiv and Ukraine's strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, a key source of Russia's revenues that helps to fund its war.

The U.N. session will coincide with top Ukrainian officials' visit to New York for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to discuss efforts to end the war.

Presidential Office Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov are expected to discuss future security guarantees for Ukraine and setting up a bilateral meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bloomberg reported.

Japan seeks record defence budget, to triple drone spending

August 29, 2025

TOKYO: Japan’s defence ministry is aiming for a major boost to its drone arsenal as part of another record spending request made today to deal with a “severely intensifying security environment”.

Japan in recent years has been shedding its strict pacifist stance, moving to obtain “counterstrike” capabilities and doubling military spending to 2% of GDP.

The defence ministry’s new budget request made on Friday for the coming fiscal year starting April 1, seen by AFP, is for ¥8.8 trillion (US$59.9 billion).

It surpasses the world’s fourth-largest economy’s previous record of ¥8.7 trillion, secured for this fiscal year ending in March 2026.

Eighty years after World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan’s constitution still limits its military capacity to ostensibly defensive measures.

However, the new budget increase reflects the “severely intensifying security environment” around Japan, a defence ministry official told reporters in Tokyo on condition of anonymity.

Drones

The budget request asks to roughly triple spending on various types of unmanned vehicles to ¥313 billion.

The ongoing war in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022 has highlighted the destructive power of drones and their growing role in modern warfare.

Under the plan unveiled Friday, Tokyo is eyeing the use of drones to strengthen a planned coastal defence system it dubs “SHIELD”.

“In the worst-case scenario where Japan’s long-distance “standoff” missiles are bypassed by enemy troops, it is hoped – Synchronised, Hybrid, Integrated and Enhanced Littoral Defence (SHIELD) – could block any invasion nearer land,” the official said.

Japan is hoping that SHIELD will be completed by March 2028, with no details yet on which part of Japan’s coastline it will be linked to.

“There’s a need to catch up with significant changes in the way militaries fight,” the defence official said.

During a visit to Istanbul this month, defence minister Gen Nakatani agreed to explore the possible purchase of Turkish drones, Japanese media reported.

Japan, which hosts some 54,000 US military personnel, is also coming under pressure from US President Donald Trump’s administration to beef up its defence capabilities.

Washington and Tokyo are moving to make their forces more nimble in response to threats such as a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Japan is also looking to boost arms exports, and this month won a US$6 billion order from the Australian navy for 11 frigates.

The budget request will now be vetted by the finance ministry, with the central government expected in the coming months to draw up a comprehensive budget proposal that is anticipated to be a record high.

The Yomiuri Shimbun daily said the overall budget request is expected to be more than ¥122 trillion, a sharp increase from ¥117.6 trillion for the current year.

Much of the money will cover elderly care and managing Japan’s colossal debts, which are among the biggest as a proportion of economic output among advanced economies.

F-47 Fighter: The ‘Stealthiest Aircraft Ever’ That Can Quarterback a Drone Swarm

August 29, 2025

Key Points and Summary – The U.S. Air Force’s secretive F-47 sixth-generation fighter is a technological marvel designed to counter the growing threat from China.

-Expected to fly faster than Mach 2, the F-47 will likely be the stealthiest aircraft ever built, featuring a tailless, horizontal design.

-More than just a fighter, it will act as a “quarterback” for a swarm of AI-enabled drone wingmen.

-Its advanced sensors and computing will shorten the “sensor-to-shooter” timeline to milliseconds, and it may even be armed with revolutionary laser weapons, ensuring American air dominance for decades to come.

The F-47 Might Be Able to Do It All

The U.S. Air Force has high hopes for the still-in-development Boeing F-47 NGAD 6th-Generation steatlh fighter.

Unprecedented stealth and speed, AI-enabled sensing and computing, long-range attack mission capability, and the ability to operate multiple drones from the cockpit are a few of the many attributes likely woven into the mysterious and predominantly “black” F-47 6th-generation stealth fighter.

Power in Numbers

Most of the details related to these capability questions are not likely to be available for important security reasons.

Yet, the Pentagon, the Trump administration, and the Air Force have publicly offered some extremely relevant hints or ideas about the aircraft.

As expected, some are likely to raise concerns about the cost of such a platform, which raises important questions of great relevance to national security.

Of course, the Air Force should consider the costs, and making a wise decision to build a significant fleet in bulk would lower prices.

And yet it seems the US simply cannot afford not to build large numbers of the F-47.

There are many reasons for this, one of which relates to recent sightings of China’s emerging 6th-generation aircraft, such as the stealthy-looking fighter-bomber J-20 and the PLA’s fast-growing fleet of J-20s.

F-47 Speed of Mach 2

The F-47 aircraft will hit speeds of at least Mach 2, President Trump announced earlier this year upon the naming of the new jet.

This speed is something that comes as little surprise, given that the F-22 has shown it can travel at speeds of at least Mach 2.25; the US F-22, Russian Su-27, and F-15 are all fighters capable of traveling faster than Mach 2, so it seems feasible that the F-47 will be faster than all of them.

Therefore, it would not be surprising if the F-47 were capable of reaching levels of speed and agility well beyond that of the “F-22,” as hinted by the President.

The effectiveness of the F-47 will be significantly enhanced by surrounding drones, known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft, controlled from the cockpit.

A manned F-47 will operate forward-positioned unmanned systems capable of blanketing high-threat areas with surveillance, testing enemy air defenses, and launching attacks with human supervision.

Many of these CCAs already exist and will likely be networked to transmit time-sensitive combat info to the F-47 cockpit quickly.

Fastest Stealth Fighter Ever?

A new generation of speed and agility would potentially introduce paradigm-changing advantages in several key respects.

Speed not only enhances air dominance as it enables advanced levels of dogfighting and air-to-air engagements, but it also dramatically improves survivability as a faster jet is more likely to outrun air attacks and be much less detectable to enemy air defense radar.

When coupled with agility and the ability to “vector” successfully, speed becomes a multiplying advantage in air combat.

The concept is to maneuver to an advantage and be ahead of, or inside, an enemy’s decision cycle, something famously referred to as OODA, for Observation, Orientation, Decision, Action.

F-47, AI and the OODA Loop

Articulated years ago by renowned US Air Force pilot John Boyd, the OODA Loop is now a classic term describing critical parameters of air-attack and dogfighting success.

It is entirely realistic that the new F-47 will be capable of maneuvering into an advantageous or superior attack position faster than any adversary it might encounter.

There are advantages beyond dogfighting prowess associated with the OODA Loop, as some war futurists have suggested that new generations of sensor fidelity and precision weapons, along with their increased attack ranges, might render dogfighting obsolete.

In this case, unparalleled speed and agility would help enable a fighter jet to both avoid being detected and maneuver away from vulnerable positions faster than it could be targeted.

Enhanced by AI

The advent of AI can, in this case, exponentially increase sensor-data processing and targeting capability, something likely to further improve the F-47’s ability to get ahead of or inside of an enemy’s OODA Loop decision cycle.

Advanced, AI-enabled systems now utilize high-tech gateway technologies that can gather, pool, organize, analyze, and transmit data across otherwise disparate or separated sensors and transport layer communication systems.

These abilities enable the integration of jet-integrated AESA radar, EO/IR sensing, RF signals, and even satellite data, allowing for their combination, organization, and analysis in relation to one another.

Sensor-to-shooter time is now significantly reduced from a process that used to take minutes to seconds or milliseconds.

An AI-enabled system can query a seemingly limitless database to compare, contrast, and analyze past circumstances, delivering decisions and options with paradigm-changing speed and accuracy.

Weapons & Fire Control

Advanced speed would also support new generations of breakthrough high-speed weapons such as air-launched hypersonic weapons, lasers, and AI-enabled long-range attack bombs and missiles.

The F-22, famously referred to as a “first-shot, first-kill” platform, will likely be surpassed in capability by Boeing’s emerging F-47.

>>23524646

However, the F-47’s likely advantages will extend well beyond new levels of speed and agility to include computing, sensing, networking, and weapons attack capabilities.

The F-47 is almost certain to feature new generations of fire-control technology, meaning it will potentially integrate an entirely new arsenal of weapons, including lasers, hypersonics, collaborative weapons capable of exchanging data in flight, and bombs and missiles that can autonomously change course and adapt to threats in flight.

F-47 Laser Attack

One possibility might be air-attack laser weapons, as the Air Force has been working on developing small-form-factor, exportable mobile power sources for years, sufficient to support fighter-jet laser weapons attacks.

Air-fired lasers would not only be scalable, low-cost, and precise but also travel at the speed of light, something which would undoubtedly support new generations of speed and agility.

Laser weapons require massive amounts of power and are therefore easily integrated into larger platforms, such as tactical trucks and ships.

The Air Force Research Laboratory has been progressing rapidly with efforts to fire lasers from drones and fighter jets, following successful ground tests and initiatives to integrate lasers onto larger, mid-sized platforms, such as the C-17 and C-130 cargo planes.

It takes little imagination to understand how lasers on a high-speed, stealthy manned fighter could improve lethality and introduce new concepts of operation.

Stealthiest Ever?

Pure stealth is, of course, another attribute that can’t be overlooked, as the external configuration of the F-47 suggests it may be the stealthiest aircraft ever to exist.

Not only does the aircraft appear to have a smooth, blended, bomber-like horizontal body with conformal air inlets, but it also appears to fly without tails, fins, or vertical structures.

A platform with little to no protruding shapes off of which an enemy radar electromagnetic “ping” can bounce is much less likely to generate a return rendering to enemy air defenses.

Much like the fully horizontal broadband stealth configurations associated with high altitude bombers, the F-47 could have the lowest radar cross-section of any aircraft in existence.

Could the F-47 be as stealthy as the B-21 yet also capable of fighter jet speeds, vectoring ability, and maneuverability? Such a combination could be paradigm-changing in the realm of air attack, particularly if combined with an ability to fire lasers and air-launched hypersonic weapons.

AI & Sensing

Alongside speed and stealth, the F-47 is almost certain to be built with never-before-seen levels of sensing ranges, information processing, and targeting technology.

Simply put, an aircraft able to “see” an enemy target with high-resolution sensing from stand-off or “less detectable” ranges would be well positioned to prevail in air combat.

This has been the case with the F-35, which, for example, has demonstrated in US Air Force wargames like Red Flag that it can destroy multiple 4th-generation fighters from ranges where it itself remains undetected or “not-seen.”

IDF kills most senior Islamic State terrorist in the Gaza Strip

AUGUST 29, 2025 19:00

Over the past week, the IDF, under the direction of the Southern Command and the Intelligence Directorate, killed Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Abu Zubaida, head of the Islamic State’s Palestine District in the Gaza Strip, the IDF confirmed on Friday.

The operation took place in the Bureij area.

Abu Zubaida held the most senior position within the ISIS terrorist network in Gaza. He directed the group’s strategic activities across Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, and the Sinai Peninsula.

According to military intelligence, he also oversaw the transfer of funds and combat equipment into Gaza, and his operatives were involved in fighting against IDF troops during the war.

His death occurred amid intensified IDF activity throughout the Gaza Strip. In recent days, the IDF has escalated operations in Gaza City, targeting dozens of terrorist infrastructure sites.

Southern Command is reportedly preparing for what officials have described as a final push to dismantle the remaining Hamas battalions embedded in several key neighborhoods.

IDF suspends humanitarian pauses in Gaza

As part of this escalation, the IDF announced the suspension of humanitarian pauses in northern Gaza, stating that ceasefire arrangements would no longer apply in Gaza City.

The change signaled the beginning of an open-ended military operation in the area, where troops have been conducting raids, gathering intelligence and executing precision strikes on buildings used by Hamas and other armed groups.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces recovered the body of hostage Ilan Weiss in Gaza City. The remains of another, as-yet-unidentified soldier were also recovered during the same operation.

The effort followed a complex intelligence-gathering process involving the Hostages and Missing Persons Headquarters, Unit 504, and the Southern Command, based on information obtained from detainees interrogated by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

The discoveries came as IDF troops intensified operations in central Gaza, particularly in Shujaiyya and Zeitoun. Forces carried out both surface-level and subterranean raids.

Engineering units destroyed tunnels, and dozens of gunmen were either killed or captured in close-quarter combat.

IDF says it detained several terror suspects during overnight op in southern Syria

August 29, 2025 5:12 pm

The IDF says that its forces carried out a series of overnight operations in southern Syria, detaining several suspects accused of advancing terror activity against Israeli troops in the area.

The raids, conducted by the 226th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade under the 210th “Bashan” Regional Division with assistance from field investigators in Military Intelligence’s Unit 504, also uncovered weapons during searches, the army says.

Israeli forces remain deployed in the buffer zone to prevent the entrenchment of terror operatives, it adds.

The IDF’s statement does not address separate reports by Syrian state media yesterday that Israeli commandos staged a raid near Damascus following two days of airstrikes.

The army has yet to comment on those claims.

IDF declares Gaza City area 'war zone,' suspending combat pauses

Aug. 29, 2025 / 10:12 AM

The Israeli military announced Friday that temporary pauses in its military operations in northern Gaza would no longer apply to Gaza City and that it was declaring the area a combat zone.

"In accordance with the situational assessment and directives of the political echelon, starting today at 10:00, the local tactical pause in military activity will not apply to the area of Gaza City, which constitutes a dangerous combat zone, the Israel Defense Forces said in a post on X.

"The IDF continues supporting humanitarian efforts while conducting operations to protect Israel."

The move withdraws protection zones that allowed aid organizations to distribute food, with localized cease-fires still in place in the al-Muwasi area and parts of central and Southern Gaza.

Tanks and aircraft have been hammering parts of Gaza's largest city for the past week and Israeli armored units have already taken up positions on the outskirts, with about a million people expected to be forced to flee the area by a potential invasion.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said routing Hamas from the city is the best way to get back Israeli hostages and that pursuing the option in tandem with negotiations for a cease-fire will put the militant group under pressure to Israel's terms.

Families and supporters of the 50 hostages still being held captive, of whom less than 20 are still believed to be alive, believe the strategy puts their loved ones in grave danger and have been protesting en masse for the past week, demanding an end to the war

The announcement came as a famine declared last week by the top global hunger monitoring agency deepened, with the United Nations warning of "further devastating consequences for civilians where famine conditions already exist."

"Many people especially sick and malnourished children, older people and people with disabilities may be unable to evacuate," U.N. organizations including Unicef and the World Food Program said in a joint statement.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification confirmed the famine on Aug. 22, saying a little under 514,000 people in Gaza, out of a total population of 2 million, were facing "starvation, destitution and death," with that number forecast to rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

It was only the fourth time the Rome-based organization had declared a famine in its more than two-decade-long history. IFSPC is backed by the United Nations and 19 other intergovernmental bodies and NGOs.

Google Maps users claim they've found an 'alien base' under a cliff in Antarctica

20:05 29 Aug 2025 GMT+1

Hold your horses folks, Google Maps users have stumbled upon another 'UFO' and it's worrying conspiracy theorists everywhere.

People are convinced that a crash-landed alien spaceship is readily available for viewing online if you go to specific coordinates.

It's worrying people on social media, and even more eerily, the item has been found in Antarctica.

Google Maps is the centre of numerous conspiracy theories, with many claiming they've seen evidence of alien life due to screenshots taken by satellites.

In all fairness, how would a 1,000ft UFO go undetected by humans, regardless of where it is on Earth?

But now, a round entity has been found beneath a cliff around 90 miles from the coast of Antarctica, which might be enough to get certain Transformers fans a bit excited.

Whether it's man-made or something otherworldly, one American ufologist has claimed that it could be stuck under a rock in yet another conspiracy theory.

Almost appearing like an Oreo, it's been theorised that the item might even be hidden on purpose, as UFO Sightings Daily website runner Scott C. Waring stated on YouTube.

"The UFO is still there! Too hard to recover or still being used?" he said.

To see the structure yourself, head onto Google Maps and type these coordinates into the search bar: 66°16'24.5"S 100°59'03.5"E.

It's about 45 miles from a domed ice island known as Mill Island, while also being just six miles from the A. B. Dobrowolski Polar Station, a Polish research base.

The object has a silver line going around the rim, which has intrigued many UFO fans, though the rest looks to be black in colour, which stands out from the rock and snow around the object.

It's heavily pixelated online, but there are some odd black lines also stretching between the plate and the rock.

Waring said on the UFO Sightings Daily website that while it was discovered two years ago, others spotted the UFO-like object even earlier.

A quick search on Reddit shows users asking about the object in 2021, labelling it as a 'UFO crash site' on the forum site.

One suggested it could be a 'weather balloon' while another said it could just be a 'pond of meltwater'.

Others spoke about 'weird stuff' you can see in Antarctica, while others said it had an 'ominous' appearance.

Sorry to poke a hole in your fun though, UFO geeks, as a scientist from the University of Newcastle has revealed that it's a 'small lake in a rock basin'.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, glaciologist Professor Bethan Davies said: "There is a small patch of snow and the warmer lake water has a lower albedo so it absorbs more solar radiation,

"This is melting the snow, giving it the semicircular arc - not a UFO." A mapping specialist at the British Antarctic Survey named Laura Gerrish agreed, saying it looked 'like a small lake'.

"This area is called the Bunger Hills, which is a largely ice-free region along the Knox Coast in Antarctica - and it has lots of small lakes and ponds," she revealed.

These can form smooth edges along the edge of the ice, explaining its appearance online.

Farmer stuns archaeologists after finding 3,000-year-old 'alien axe' deep in rainforest

Updated: 29/08/2025 - 04:03

Archaeologists have been left mystified after a 3,000-year-old "extraterrestrial" axe was discovered by a farmer in the Indonesian rainforest.

The ancient axe, discovered in the Kalimantan area of Borneo, is believed to have been forged from a meteorite and is thought to have been used as a status symbol.

Researchers previously believed that ancient Bronze Age societies in Indonesia only utilised metals found locally, including stone and copper.

And the conical axe find has left researchers questioning whether the country's ancient inhabitants had progressed past the Stone Age earlier than initially thought - and could have been capable of sophisticated metalworking.

The incredible find was not made by archaeologists carrying out an excavation - but a local farmer who was panning for gold.

The intriguing artefact is just one of many ancient objects uncovered by the Indonesian farmer, who has built up a collection of stone axes and beads which were made by the Dayak tribe, the indigenous people of the island of Borneo.

According to local folklore, objects such as the axe only appeared after lightning strikes.

However, researchers have suggested it could have made from melted meteorite material using advanced metalworking techniques.

Scientists were particularly drawn to the artefact's conical shape as they say it demonstrates an expert level of craftsmanship.

Dr Hartatik from the Banjar Regency Cultural Heritage Expert Team, said: "This artefact represents not only technical mastery, but also the social and cultural values of Bronze Age life in Borneo."

The indigenous name for the object is "Gigi Petir" or "Untu Gledek".

One of the first archaeologists to analyse the object, Ida Yogi, said: "In all my years studying Kalimantan's archaeology, I have never seen a conical axe like this."
