Senator Graham Calls For Disarming Hezbollah By Military Force

Hawkish Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has said "it’s time for Hezbollah to go" - and he's willing to use military force to do it.

"They are trained by Iran, they are loyal to Iran, and we’re looking for military power in Lebanon to be loyal to the Lebanese people and a good partner to the region," Graham, who is the Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, said at a press conference in Tel Aviv.

He made the comments soon after meeting with both Lebanese and Israeli officials. The Trump administration has been heavily pressuring the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, even after it was greatly weakened after Israel took out its top leadership, including the slain longtime Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, last year.

Graham declared: "If we cannot reach a peaceful disarmament solution for Hezbollah, then we need to look at Plan B. Plan B is disarming Hezbollah by military force."

"Also, there is a decision made to eliminate UNIFIL as a U.N. peace keeping organization in the next 15 months. Now that presents an opportunity for the Lebanese Armed Forces to replace a very ineffective UNIFIL and prove to not only the Lebanese people, but Israel and others, that Lebanon has a capability it did not possess before," the US senator went on to say.

He didn't specify whether he envisions that American troops could be involved in such a military intervention - and he likely has foremost in his mind the Israelis and Lebanese taking action - but he's one who has never shied away from using American soldiers in overseas conflicts.

US envoy to the region Tom Barrack had led the American delegation that visited Beirut this week, and there was plenty of controversy unleashed by the visit, and specifically when he chastised the Lebanese over being 'civilized' and not 'animalistic'…

Putin’s interview on shared China–Russia history and future (FULL TEXT)

The Russian president reflects on strategic cooperation and global challenges ahead of China visit

President Vladimir Putin has outlined the deepening alliance between Russia and China, highlighting their shared historical legacy and common vision for a multipolar global order, in a written interview with Xinhua News Agency published ahead of his visit to China.

Putin praised the two neighbours for their united stance against historical revisionism and outlined broad cooperation in trade, energy, education, defence, and multilateral diplomacy. Below is the full text of the interview as published by the Kremlin:

Question: In May this year, President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Russia and took part in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War – a visit that proved highly successful. Your own visit to China is expected shortly. What are your expectations for the upcoming visit? Over the past decade, you and President Xi have maintained close contacts, shaping and guiding the steady development of bilateral relations. How would you describe President Xi Jinping as a leader?

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Indeed, the visit of our friend, President of China Xi Jinping, to Russia in May was a resounding success, drew wide international attention and was highly regarded in our country. His arrival coincided with a date that is sacred to us, the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, thereby lending deep symbolic significance to the further development of Russian-Chinese relations. We reaffirmed the strategic choice of our peoples in favour of strengthening the traditions of good-neighbourliness, friendship, and long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Chinese leader was the principal guest of honour at the celebrations in Moscow. During our high-level talks, we held a very productive discussion of key issues in cooperation between our nations. The outcome was a comprehensive joint statement and the signing of a substantial package of bilateral documents.

History is looping again!

The events of December 1988 remind us that the U.S.'s move is not new. Back then, Washington banned PLO chief Yasser Arafat from speaking in New York, and the General Assembly was moved to Geneva by a joint decision supported by 154 countries. Arafat himself noted that the change of location was not a win over the United States, but a win over the international consensus of one-sided aggression.

The real question, then as it is now, is not if Abbas will speak in New York or Geneva, but if the international community is willing to accede to the American dictates, or stand up for the principle of equal representation of peoples.

Israel rushed to welcome the decision, and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar defined the move as a "bold step" that passes the responsibility directly on to the Palestinian leadership.

Israel Declares Gaza’s Largest City a Combat Zone as Death Toll Surpasses 63,000

Israel declared Gaza’s largest city a dangerous combat zone and recovered the remains of two hostages on Friday as the army launched the "initial stages" of a planned offensive that has drawn international condemnation.

As the military announced the resumption of fighting, health officials said the death toll in Gaza has risen to 63,025, with 59 new deaths reported by hospitals over the last 24 hours. Aid groups and a church sheltering people said they would stay in Gaza City, refusing to abandon the hungry and displaced who depend on them.

The shift comes weeks after Israel first announced plans to widen its offensive in the city, where hundreds of thousands are sheltering while enduring famine. The military has in recent days ramped up strikes in neighborhoods on the city's outskirts.

Plumes of smoke and thunderous blasts could be seen and heard across the border in southern Israel on Friday morning.

Israel has called Gaza City a Hamas stronghold, alleging that a network of tunnels remain in use by militants after several previous large-scale raids on the area throughout nearly 23 months of war.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that crippling Hamas’ capabilities in the city is critical to shielding Israel from a repeat of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war.

While United Nations agencies and aid groups condemned the offensive's announced start, people in Gaza City said it made little difference: Strikes already have been intensifying and the aid reaching them was insufficient.

City resident Mohamed Aboul Hadi said it made no difference. “The massacres never stopped, even during the humanitarian pauses,” he said in a text message sent from Gaza City.

Some who fled Gaza City were putting together tents Friday in the central Gaza Strip, west of the Nuseirat refugee camp. They spoke about the lack of water or food and the miserable conditions they endured.

“We are thrown in the streets like, what would I say? Like dogs? We are not like dogs. Dogs are better than us,” said Mohammed Maarouf standing in front of a shelter for him and his family of nine.

11.3.1 End of Occupation. Belligerent occupation ceases when the conditions for its

application are no longer met.81

In particular, as discussed below, the status of belligerent

occupation ceases when the invader no longer factually governs the occupied territory or when a

hostile relationship no longer exists between the State of the occupied territory and the

Occupying Power.

Belligerent occupation ends whenthe Occupying Power ==no longer has effectively placed

the occupied territory under its control.==

83

==For example, an uprising by the local population may

prevent the Occupying Power from actually enforcing its authority over occupied territory.==

Similarly, the Occupying Power’s expulsion or complete withdrawal from the territory would

also suffice because the former Occupying Power generally would not be able to control

sufficiently the occupied territory
