In other words, if the missle was a heat-seeker, the F16s might simply have deployed chaff. Or they might have intentionally drawn off the missle and taken a hit themselves to protect AF1.

Also, AF1 was flying from Quebec to Singapore. The Great Circle goes nowhere near Seattle. Maybe the missle wasn't even directly fired at AF1.

I'd prefer to take Q at his word. He said AF1 rerouted, not that AF1 was shot at. I suspect, as many anons have suggested with lots of pics and great analysis, that the missle was a Trident–ie, a ballistic missile rather than a SAM, in other words probably fired at NK to disrupt the summit rather than fired at AF1 directly.
