ESA's JUICE spacecraft flies by Venus on its way to Jupiter's icy moons

During the wee hours of this morning (Aug. 31), a boxy spacecraft with solar wings in the shape of crosses flew right by Venus — if all went according to plan.
That probe is the European Space Agency's (ESA) JUICE ("Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer"), which is on its way to do just what you might expect after hearing its name.
The ultimate goal is indeed for JUICE to study our solar system's creamsicle-colored gas giant, but also to gather data about three of the planet's largest moons — Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.
These three moons are believed to harbor oceans under their icy crusts, meaning they could be solid leads in astronomers' quest to find life beyond Earth. Europa in particular is a high-profile suspect for that agenda.
But if you're familiar with the arrangement of our solar system's planets, you may wonder why JUICE flew by Venus on its way to Jupiter — that's technically the wrong direction. The simple explanation is that JUICE can't really take a straight-line route to its destination.
Rather, it's hopping around the gravitational tides of different worlds — it recently flew by the moon and then Earth again, for instance — as part of a larger, fuel-efficient effort to slingshot itself to the Jovian system.
Unfortunately for the public, JUICE operators had to turn off the spacecraft's sensors during the probe's Venus flyby because of the intense heat of the amber-hued planet's environment. What does that mean? No images.
In fact, according to a statement published by ESA on Aug. 25, JUICE even used its main, high-gain antenna as a "thermal shield" during today's encounter. That flyby peaked with a scheduled closest approach to Venus at 1:28 a.m. EST (0528 GMT) today.
The flyby comes after JUICE presented mission operators with a bit of a challenge in July, as the spacecraft stopped communicating information about its health and telemetry.
Twenty hours of troubleshooting later, however, the team was able to find the robotic explorer's voice once again, and all was well.
The next stop for the nearly 13,300-pound (6,000-kilogram) probe will be Earth yet again.
"JUICE will use the gravity of Venus this week to bend its orbit around the sun and gain speed relative to Earth without using fuel," ESA wrote in the Aug. 25 statement.
"JUICE will use the Earth flyby in 2026 to further fine-tune its trajectory." From there, the probe will conduct one more orbit around the sun, the team explained, before returning to (you guessed it) Earth a final time in January 2029.
Only then can it start thinking about the culmination of its journey. It should settle in orbit around Jupiter in July 2031.

One week until the blood moon total lunar eclipse lights up September's sky

In just one week, Earth's shadow will roll across the lunar surface, giving rise to a spectacular 'blood moon' total lunar eclipse on Sept. 7-8.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the moon and sun, casting its shadow over our natural satellite.
The tilted orbit of Earth's moon prevents us from experiencing a total lunar eclipse every month during the new moon phase.
However, about three times every year, orbital mechanics conspire to bring the Earth, moon and sun into perfect alignment, setting the stage for a breathtaking lunar spectacle.
The week leading up to the total lunar eclipse is the perfect time to stake out your ideal eclipse viewing spot.
This extra bit of prep will give photographers the opportunity to line up spectacular compositions featuring the eclipsed moon alongside iconic landmarks, while also allowing naked eye viewers to ensure that there won't be any pesky buildings ruining their view.
Stargazers lucky enough to have a direct line of sight on the moon during the total lunar eclipse will see it take on a rusty red hue as it slips into the deepest part of Earth's shadow during totality, known as its umbra.
This crimson glow comes from Rayleigh scattering, wherein bluer wavelengths of sunlight are deflected by particles in Earth's atmosphere, while longer red wavelengths are allowed to pass through relatively unhindered.
During totality, the moon is saturated in the longer wavelengths of sunlight, causing it to turn a deep red, granting it the moniker of a "blood moon".
There's absolutely no need to panic if clouds threaten your view of the lunar spectacle, or if the moon is below the horizon as the eclipse unfolds, as Space.com will be hosting a livestream of the event online, with details to be released closer to the time.

What to look out for when the blood moon rises on Sept. 7-8
The total lunar eclipse will begin globally at 11:28 a.m. (1528 GMT) on Sept. 7, with totality occurring at 1:30 p.m. ET (1730 GMT) and stretching on for a staggering 82 minutes before the deepest part of Earth's shadow begins to slip from the surface of the lunar disk.
Each phase of the eclipse will occur at the same time for everyone on Earth, though your ability to see it will be dictated by whether the moon is above the horizon as the cosmic alignment plays out.
An estimated 5.8 billion people — roughly 76% of the world's population — spread across Australia, Asia, Africa and eastern Europe will be in a position to witness totality from beginning to end.
Viewers in countries on either side of this block, such as the U.K., Spain and Brazil, will get a glimpse at some phases of the eclipse, but miss parts, or all of totality.
Sadly, the moon will be below the horizon for the entirety of the Sept. 7-8 eclipse for those in the Americas.
There's no risk of damaging your eyesight when viewing the stages of a total lunar eclipse — as opposed to a solar eclipse, where utmost care must be taken to protect your eyesight — so feel free to observe the event through a telescope, with binoculars, or the naked eye!

SpaceX Starlink Mission

On Sunday, August 31 at 7:49 a.m. ET, Falcon 9 launched 28 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
This was the 23rd flight for the Falcon 9 first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-5, GPS III Space Vehicle 06, Inmarsat I6-F2, CRS-28, Intelsat G-37, NG-20, TD7, and now 16 Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage landed on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Russia’s top general gives update on territorial advances

Russian forces taken control of over 3,500 square kilometers and 149 settlements in the Ukraine operation since March, Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov reported in an update on Saturday.
He noted that Russia has advanced along nearly the entire front over this time.
Gerasimov, speaking at a Defense Ministry briefing in Moscow, also gave percentage figures for Russian territory liberated and outlined plans for further operations.
According to Gerasimov, Russian troops “have liberated 99.7% of the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic (less than 60 sq. km remain) and 79% of the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic.”
He added that 74% of Zaporozhye Region and 76% of Kherson Region are now under the control of Russian forces. All four former Ukrainian regions voted to join Russia in referendums in September 2022.
Gerasimov said efforts are also underway to establish security zones along Russia’s border in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkov Regions.
After repelling a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region that began in August of last year, Moscow is seeking to create a “buffer zone” to shield its border from further attacks.
In Sumy Region, Russian troops currently control 210 sq. km and 13 settlements, Gerasimov said.
“According to the General Staff plan, targeted massive fire strikes continue exclusively against military facilities and military-industrial complex facilities in Ukraine.
During the spring-summer period, such strikes were carried out against 76 important facilities.
Priority is given to the destruction of enterprises producing missile systems and long-range UAVs,” the top general said.
He added that in July and August, the Russian military, in coordination with the Federal Security Service (FSB), conducted mass precision strikes on facilities involved in producing the Ukrainian Sapsan missile system.
Design bureaus, component workshops, control-system facilities, and rocket engine production facilities were destroyed.
Earlier this month, the FSB reported that targets included chemical and mechanical plants in Pavlograd, Dneptropetrovsk Region, as well as the Zvezda plant and State Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Products in Shostka, Sumy Region.
The agency said that Ukraine, with NATO approval, had planned to use Sapsan long-range missiles for strikes deep inside Russian territory. However, its plans “have been thwarted.”

Assassinated Ukrainian MP ‘directly ordered’ shelling of Donbass civilians – ex-diplomat

Andrey Parubiy, a far-right Ukrainian politician who was shot dead in Lviv on Saturday, directly ordered attacks on Donbass and provoked a “civil war” with eastern Ukraine after the Maidan coup, ex-Ukrainian diplomat Andrey Telizhenko has told RT.
Parubiy, an MP and former speaker of the Ukrainian Rada, played an active role in the Western-backed coup in Kiev in 2014, as well as in the nationalist government it brought to power.
He had deep and long-running ties to Ukraine’s neo-Nazi movement, co-founding the far-right Social-National Party of Ukraine.
“During the cabinet of ministers meetings, [at] which I was present, Parubiy directly ordered the mass shellings of the people of Donbass,” Telizhenko told RT on Saturday.
“He said, ‘We do not care who those people are. Russians, they’re Moscali [a Ukrainian slur for Russians], we should kill them,’” the former diplomat, who was an adviser to Ukraine’s prosecutor general at the time, said.
Parubiy and his team were “working directly with the Jamestown Foundation, a former CIA central think tank in Washington, DC,” Telizhenko claimed.
That’s a direct citation from Parubiy during the cabinet of ministers meeting, in which he pushed to provoke the civil war in eastern Ukraine, which has now led to a big massive conflict.
Parubiy and his team were “working directly with the Jamestown Foundation, a former CIA central think tank in Washington, DC,” Telizhenko claimed.
This is not just a collaborator with the West. He’s a Nazi. He was directly supporting the Nazi movement in Ukraine.
According to Telizhenko, Parubiy directly coordinated the shootings during the Maidan coup.
“He was coordinating the radicals on Maidan, when to shoot, who to shoot and how to shoot, even who to shoot [among] their own” and “provoking insurgents within the coup itself,” he said.
“His team was responsible for blocking the anti-sniper unit [from] coming to Maidan.”
Parubiy “also covered up the shootings” in the subsequent investigation, as well as blocking the probe into the 2014 Odessa massacre, Telizhenko said.
“He was responsible for closing down the case and destroying the evidence [of] his involvement in the coordination of that terrorist attack,” he said.
The far-right MP was reportedly responsible for organizing, arming, and transporting the militants which burned 42 anti-Maidan activists to death in the Odessa Trade Unions House.

Staunch neo-Nazi and Maidan kingpin assassinated: Who was prominent Ukrainian MP Andrey Parubiy?

Andrey Parubiy, a former Ukrainian parliamentary speaker and sitting far-right MP, was shot dead on Saturday in the western city of Lviv.
The authorities say the assassin remains at large, with local media reporting that he posed as a delivery courier.
Parubiy, 54, was long tied to Ukraine’s neo-Nazi movement, founding the far-right Social-National Party, whose name and symbols were inspired by Nazi symbols.
He played a key role in the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, later taking part in a harsh crackdown on those who opposed the post-Maidan government.
Here are the key points from his troubled legacy.
Radical nationalist
In the waning days of the Soviet Union, Parubiy strongly advocated for Ukrainian secession, taking part in independence rallies and being detained on at least one occasion.
He was also involved in efforts to restore the graves of Ukrainian Insurgent Army fighters, the force led by Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera during World War II.
In 1991, he and Oleg Tyagnibok, another notorious far-right figure, co-founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine (SNPU), which was rebranded as Svoboda (Freedom) in the early 2000s. The SNPU adopted a Wolfsangel symbol resembling Nazi iconography.
He later took part in the Orange Revolution of 2004, when demonstrators disputed the results of a presidential election – which ultimately led to Viktor Yushchenko’s rise to power and his pro-EU, pro-NATO policies.
Parubiy entered Ukraine’s national legislature in 2007, winning a seat on the ticket of Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine–People’s Self-Defense bloc.
Maidan enforcer
During the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev, Parubiy took command of far-right gangs of demonstrators in the protest camp, which on numerous occasions clashed with law enforcement.
He has also been accused of involvement in the sniper fire that killed dozens of protesters and police officers in February 2014, although he has never faced formal charges.
Odessa fire and Donbass conflict
After the Maidan coup and the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovich, Parubiy was appointed secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, a post he held until August 2014.
In this role, he oversaw the early crackdown on those resisting the Western-backed coup, including Kiev’s offensive in Donbass, which was marred by atrocities and strikes against civilians. In 2023, he was put on the wanted list in Russia.

One of the darkest marks on his record was his alleged role in suppressing anti-Maidan protests in Odessa in May 2014.
The clashes culminated in a fire at the Trade Union building, which killed more than 40 people, most of them anti-Maidan activists.
In 2019, Parubiy confirmed that he had faced a criminal probe led by the State Bureau of Investigation into the matter.
Parliament speaker
In April 2016, Parubiy became speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, which made him second in line to the presidency. During his tenure, parliament passed laws restricting the use of the Russian language in Ukraine.
In 2017, the lawmaker met with two senior Republicans at the time – House Speaker Paul Ryan and late Senator John McCain. The meeting was seen as a sign of support from the US to the post-Maidan government, which has been at odds with Moscow.
Parubiy subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding, underscoring the partnership between the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament.
In August 2019, Parubiy, an ally of former President Pyotr Poroshenko, vacated the office after the election of Vladimir Zelensky, who reshaped the legislature.
From that point until his death, he sat in parliament for Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party, although his influence was far less visible than during the Maidan coup.
Hitler controversy
In 2018, Parubiy said, “the greatest man who practiced direct democracy was Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.”
The remarks triggered a backlash both at home and in the West. He later claimed that he meant to say Hitler used democratic procedures for voter manipulation.
Why was he killed?
The motive behind Parubiy’s assassination remains unclear.
Sources cited by Strana.ua suggest it could stem from internal rivalries, pointing to his proven experience in organizing violent street protests – skills that might have been seen as dangerous in a climate of potential unrest in Ukraine.
Others have speculated about potential Russian involvement, portraying the murder as possible retribution for his central role in the 2014 Maidan coup. No evidence has been provided to support this, and Moscow has not commented on the killing.
Commenting on Parubiy’s death, Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik said Ukrainian politicians “are clearing the ‘political field’ of the old Banderites in anticipation of hypothetical elections.”

German police disperse protest against militarization (VIDEOS)

An initially peaceful anti-war march in Cologne descended into violence on Saturday after activists clashed with police.
Protesters were rallying against Berlin’s plans to boost military spending and aid for Ukraine and Israel.
The rally, which reportedly drew nearly 3,000 people, was organized by the anti-war group Disarm Rheinmetall, a reference to Germany’s top defense supplier.
The group staged multiple demonstrations this week, including blocking access to a Bundeswehr building on Wednesday and protesting outside Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger’s home in Meerbusch, near Dusseldorf.
The activists said they were opposing the government’s plans to increase defense spending, expand the army through conscription, and provide military support to Ukraine and Israel.
Footage from Saturday’s protest showed banners reading “lay down your arms” and “We won’t die in your wars.”
One protester told the video agency Ruptly that German militarization and NATO’s role in the Ukraine conflict marked “a significant step towards World War III.”
Another criticized the government for channeling funds into the arms industry instead of social needs and education.
According to reports, citing the local authorities, the march was repeatedly halted after police reported seeing protesters masking themselves and setting off smoke bombs.
Police also said it intercepted an escort vehicle carrying pyrotechnics, methylated spirits, and gas cylinders. It claimed it was eventually forced to disperse the crowd after some demonstrators attacked officers.
Videos posted online showed police using their fists, batons and tear gas, with several activists visibly injured. A number of protesters were reportedly detained, though no figure was given.
A spokesman for the demonstrators accused the police of attacking activists, claiming between 40 and 60 people were injured.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suspended borrowing limits to ramp up defense spending, pledging to raise it to 3.5% of GDP by 2029.
He also announced plans to expand the Bundeswehr from about 182,000 to 240,000 active troops by 2031, and introduced mandatory registration for 18-year-olds to prepare for a potential return to conscription.
He has further suggested that German troops could be deployed to Ukraine as part of a European peacekeeping force, despite Russia’s rejection of any Western troop presence in Ukraine under any guise.

Trump promises trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky

US President Donald Trump has stated that he believes a trilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky will happen.
Following his recent summit with Putin in Alaska, Trump pushed for a one-on-one between the Russian president and Zelensky ahead of any trilateral gathering.
The Kremlin has not ruled out a bilateral meeting, but stressed it should serve as the final stage of talks once tangible progress has been made in the peace process.
In an interview with the Daily Caller on Friday, Trump was asked whether a trilateral meeting is still planned.
“A tri would happen. A bi, I don’t know about, but a tri will happen,” the US president said. “But, you know, sometimes people aren’t ready for it.”
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, while Russia is still interested in direct talks with Ukraine, preparation for such a meeting is not “very active.”
All our positions have been communicated,” and Ukraine has submitted its own provisions, he said on Friday. “Further discussion is necessary.”
Moscow has already agreed to “show some flexibility” on a number of points that Putin and Trump discussed in Alaska, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told NBC News last week.
The US president later presented his proposals at a follow-up meeting with the Ukrainian leader and his European NATO backers, but “Zelensky said no to everything,” Lavrov said.
The reaction of Kiev’s Western sponsors at the talks “indicates that they don’t want peace,” the top diplomat said.
European NATO leaders have increasingly pushed for “security guarantees” for Ukraine in the form of Western “peacekeepers” or “reassurance forces” – something Moscow has stressed it would never accept, warning of potential uncontrolled escalation.
Moscow has condemned the EU’s recent militarization and longstanding military support for Ukraine.
It has consistently described the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war waged by the West and maintained that any settlement must address Russia’s security concerns and the root causes of the crisis, including NATO’s continued eastward expansion.

Russia strikes Ukrainian port infrastructure – MOD

Russian forces have carried out a long-range strike on Ukrainian port infrastructure used by Kiev’s military, according to a statеment released on Sunday by the Defense Ministry in Moscow.
The ministry said that Russian tactical aviation, drones, missiles, and artillery had struck coastal targets “used in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a Norwegian-made NASAMS air defense system” that was protecting them. However, neither the exact whereabouts of the targets nor other details were provided.
The ministry added that the bases of Ukrainian troops and foreign fighters in more than 150 locations were also attacked.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian media shared pictures of large fires in the coastal Odessa Region. Energy company DTEK said four of its power facilities in the region had been hit overnight.
Local officials confirmed the damage, adding that the city of Chernomorsk, not far from Odessa, and its surroundings bore the brunt of the attack.
“The enemy massively attacked the Odessa Region with strike drones,” officials said, adding that "fires broke out in some places, but were quickly extinguished by our rescuers".
“One person is known to have been injured,” officials noted, adding that more than 29,000 people were left without electricity.
Russia has for months been targeting Ukrainian military-related industrial sites, defense enterprises, as well as port and energy infrastructure.
Moscow has said the strikes are retaliation for Ukrainian attacks inside Russia that often hit critical infrastructure and residential areas, and maintains that it does not target civilians.

Zelensky threatens ‘new deep strikes’ into Russia

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has threatened new strikes into Russia, days after claiming that Kiev possessed a brand-new long-range missile capable of reaching Moscow.
Zelensky wrote on Telegram that he had been briefed by Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Aleksandr Syrsky, on the current battlefield situation.
“We will continue our active actions exactly as needed to protect Ukraine. Forces and means are prepared. New deep strikes have also been planned,” he said on Sunday, without providing further details.
Earlier this month, Zelensky claimed Ukraine had developed the long-range Flamingo missile with a reported range of 3,000 kilometers – which would be enough to reach not only Moscow but also Russian cities beyond the Ural mountains.
The Ukrainian leader, however, said that mass production is not expected for the next several months.
British media outlets cast doubts on whether the Flamingo was developed in Ukraine, noting similarities with the FP-5 cruise missile produced by the UK-based Milanion Group and unveiled at an arms expo in Abu Dhabi this year.
The UK has also been supportive of Kiev’s long-range strikes, having provided it with Storm Shadow missiles in the past.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that there is “nothing surprising” in the similarities, adding that “Ukraine has long turned into a testing ground for Western weapons. There are more than enough examples.”
On Friday, the Kyiv Independent also reported that Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau has launched an investigation into Fire Point, the defense firm linked to the development of the Flamingo missile, after reports it misled the government on pricing and deliveries.
Earlier this month the Wall Street Journal reported that the US had blocked Ukraine from carrying out strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Throughout the conflict, some of Kiev’s Western backers have been wary of authorizing unrestricted strikes into Russia using Western-supplied weapons, citing concerns over escalation with Moscow.
Ukraine has regularly carried out long-range attacks inside Russia, which Moscow says frequently hit civilian areas and critical infrastructure.
Russia has retaliated with strikes on Ukrainian military-related facilities and defense enterprises but maintains that it never targets civilians.

IDF chief threatens Hamas leaders abroad: ‘We will reach them too’

Following Israel’s assassination of top Houthi officials and Hamas’s military spokesman yesterday, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir says the military will continue to target threats “across all arenas,” speaking at a situational assessment in the Northern Command.
“The IDF is acting offensively, with initiative and operational superiority across all arenas and at all times,” Zamir says during the assessment, which reviewed intelligence and discussed operational plans for the continuation of the Gaza campaign, according to an IDF statement.
The strike on Hamas spokesman Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, more commonly known as Abu Obeida, “joins a series of significant IDF strikes in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and other arenas,” Zamir continues, saying this “is not the end.”
“The bulk of Hamas’s ruling leadership that remains is abroad, and we will reach them too,” he warns.

Turning to address the IDF’s recent recovery of slain hostages Idan Shtivi and Ilan Weiss, Zamir says: “We continue our efforts and operations to return all the hostages, both living and the fallen.”
Zamir thanks reservists who will report for duty ahead of the security cabinet-approved plan “to deepen the fighting against Hamas” by conquering Gaza City in October, saying, “The mission is not yet complete.”

Air force targets underground Hezbollah bunkers in major strikes in southern Lebanon

Israeli Air Force jets carried out a series of large-scale airstrikes against Hezbollah underground bunkers in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning, the IDF announced
The IDF said it struck the terror group’s “military infrastructure, including underground infrastructure” where the military had identified Hezbollah activity in the Beaufort Ridge area of the Nabatiyeh Governate.
“The existence of the sites and the activity within them constitute a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon” that were reached in November, ending a period of open conflict, the military added.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported intense strikes in the wooded area of Ali al-Taher, where forest fires were later declared, and in Al-Debsha, where serious damage was recorded.
According to NNA, jets fired “a large number of missiles,” with images showing thick columns of smoke rising into the sky.
Residents of northern Israel reportedly heard the impacts of the strikes from dozens of miles away.
The strikes came as the Lebanese government pledged to take steps to disarm Hezbollah, which has effectively controlled southern Lebanon for decades. Hezbollah has vowed not to surrender its weapons.
The Lebanese government is expected on Sunday to come up with a plan to convince Hezbollah to disarm, US envoy Tom Barrack said Tuesday.
Hezbollah began launching near-daily attacks on Israel border towns on October 8, 2023 — a day after fellow Iran-backed terror group Hamas invaded southern Israel, sparking the war in Gaza.
Hezbollah’s rocket attacks displaced some 60,000 residents of northern Israel.
In a bid to make it safe for them to return home, Israel in September stepped up operations in Lebanon, leading to two months of open warfare that ended with the November truce.
Israeli troops have remained stationed in several points in southern Lebanon following a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November 2024. The IDF says it carries out strikes in response to violations of the ceasefire.

Israel readies for Houthi retaliation after PM, ministers killed in IDF strikes in Yemen

The IDF has said it is preparing for any possible scenario following the death of Houthi Prime Minister Ghalib al-Rahawi and eight additional ministers in an Israeli airstrike on Thursday.
Israel Air Force officials noted that the Houthis possess independent production capabilities for manufacturing missiles and drones, with parts of their production line supported by purchases from countries such as Iran and North Korea.
While the group does not have a large or readily available weapons arsenal, and the number of launchers in their possession is unknown, the IDF is taking into account that they may attempt to challenge detection and air defense systems.
As a result, the IDF has reinforced certain units in preparation for the oncoming retaliation.
Houthis vow revenge after death of prime minister
According to the Houthis, no senior military officials, who hold greater influence than those killed, were harmed in Israel’s strikes.
“We will take revenge, and what the enemy has achieved is nothing more than a chance success.
To the Zionists, I say: dark days await you,” Mahdi al-Mashat, the head of the Houthis’ Supreme Political Council, said in a recorded speech released Saturday night.
In his speech, he also addressed Gaza residents: “To the people of the [Gaza] Strip, we will continue our stance until the aggression stops and the siege is lifted from you, whatever the price may be.”

Hamas propaganda chief slain, Israel’s defense minister says

Hamas’s chief propagandist, Hudahaifa Kahlout, or Abu Obeida, was killed in a targeted killing on Saturday by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security agency, Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday.
“Hamas terror spokesperson Abu Obeida was eliminated in Gaza and sent to meet all the eliminated members of the Axis of Evil from Iran, Gaza, Lebanon and Yemen in the depths of hell.
Congratulations to the IDF and Shin Bet for the flawless execution. Soon, with the intensification of the campaign in Gaza, many more of his criminal partners—Hamas murderers and rapists—will join him there,” Katz wrote on X.
Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the IDF had targeted Abu Obeida in an airstrike in Gaza City.
“We struck the Hamas spokesman, the spokesman of the murderous, evil organization, Abu Obeida,” Netanyahu said ahead of the weekly Cabinet meeting. “I hope he is no longer with us, but I notice that there is no one left to answer that question on Hamas’s side.”
The IDF said on Saturday night that it had struck a “key Hamas terrorist” in the Gaza City area, amid reports that Abu Obeida had been killed.
The operation was directed from the joint situation room of the IDF and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the two organizations said in a statement.
It was “made possible due to prior intelligence gathered by the Shine Bet and the IDF’s Intelligence Directorate, identifying the terrorist’s hiding place.”
Abu Obeida, the statement said, “was one of the last remaining senior terrorists of Hamas’s military wing from before October 7, 2023.”
According to Hamas, the airstrike targeted a building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood, and caused “dozens of deaths and injuries.”
A Palestinian source told Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya channel on Sunday morning that the Hamas propaganda chief, who has never shown his unmasked face to the public, had been killed.
On Oct. 25, 2023, the Arab media division of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit revealed Abu Obeida‘s identity, naming him as Hudhayfah Kahlot.
“Hudhayfah Kahlot, you have been exposed,” Col. Avichay Adraee, head of the Arab media division, tweeted, sharing a video revealing Kahlot’s face.
“He and other Hamas-ISIS leaders like to hide inside tunnels and behind women and children, as well as behind masks and shadows.” “It is time to stop covering up. The mask and keffiyeh will not help you,” said Adraee.
On Friday, Abu Obeida, 40, threatened the hostages’ lives in response to the IDF’s plan to capture Gaza City, saying that the terrorist organization would keep captives “as much as possible” alongside its operatives.
He warned that “the enemy army will pay in the blood of its soldiers” and threatened more kidnappings. According to him, Hamas is “on alert, with high morale, and will teach the invaders harsh lessons.”
The IDF continues to strike Hamas and is enhancing its focus on the area of Gaza City, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said on Friday.
Zamir spoke hours after the military announced that daily humanitarian tactical pauses would no longer apply to Gaza City, which was described as “a dangerous combat zone.”
Netanyahu on Aug. 14 outlined the government’s parameters for ending the war against Hamas in Gaza.
The conditions for victory were listed as the disarmament of Hamas; the return of all 48 remaining hostages; the demilitarization of Gaza; Israeli security control; and establishing an alternative civilian administration.

Trump reportedly pressuring Netanyahu to decisively defeat Hamas in a matter of weeks

Ahead of today’s security cabinet meeting to discuss plans for the Gaza war, unnamed sources tell Channel 12 that US President Donald Trump is increasing pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to defeat Hamas, after losing faith in the efficacy of ceasefire and hostage release talks.
Sources involved in the matter tell the Hebrew network that, following the January hostage-ceasefire deal and the May release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, Trump has pushed Netanyahu to move more rapidly toward the defeat of Hamas.
Trump’s stance is reportedly a main reason that Netanyahu is pushing for either the full military conquest of Gaza or a comprehensive deal strictly on Israel’s terms, despite security officials speaking out against such plans.
Channel 12 adds that Trump appears convinced that Hamas can be decisively beaten, “perhaps even within two weeks,” and that the US president feels he has already fulfilled the mission of bringing home most of the hostages, especially after Alexander’s release.
Despite public rhetoric in support of returning the hostages, Trump is privately making clear that, in his view, Hamas will never return all the hostages, but rather keep a certain number as a means of survival.
The network says that in July, after Hamas returned to hostage talks and Qatari mediators reported optimism, Trump publicly echoed that optimism, in support of the efforts of his envoy Steve Witkoff and Netanyahu to pursue a renewed deal.
But when Hamas toughened its position later on in those talks, amid international outcry over dire reports of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Trump “lost patience” with the terror group, partly because he had publicly given weight to Qatari optimism that proved mistaken.
Around the same time, Netanyahu also “fell into line,” declaring that the opportunity for a deal had passed, and ordered the Israeli delegation home from Doha, the report continues.
According to one source, even when Hamas returned two weeks ago with an approved proposal, Witkoff refused to engage, no longer trusting the Qataris and not wanting to risk embarrassing Trump.

Two Russian helicopters destroyed in Crimea after drone attack, says OSINT analyst

Drones targeted Simferopol in Russian-occupied Crimea on Saturday, August 30. Two Russian helicopters were destroyed at the local airport, reports aviation analytics resource AviVector.
"Ukrainian drones destroyed two helicopters at Simferopol airport on August 30. Around 06:30 UTC (09:30 Kyiv time -ed.), Russian monitoring resources recorded the movement of drones heading toward Simferopol airport. Later, footage of a fire near the airport appeared online," the resource reported.
Analysts compared satellite images from August 22 at 09:07 UTC and August 30 at 09:02 UTC.
The images show that a fire broke out in the area where Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters had been stationed, according to preliminary assessments.
Drones destroy Russian equipment
On December 31, 2024, Ukrainian intelligence used maritime drones to destroy two Russian Mi-8 helicopters in the Black Sea. Another helicopter was also damaged.
Several months earlier, on the night of June 28, the Security Service of Ukraine carried out an operation against the Kirovske military airfield in occupied Crimea.
The strike destroyed three Russian attack helicopters, Mi-8, Mi-26, and Mi-28, as well as a Pantsir-S1 self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun system.

Putin's palace narrowly escapes destruction during 4-day fire in his absence

A massive fire broke out near the so-called “palace” of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Gelendzhik after a drone crash. Firefighters battled the blaze for four days, according to Meduza.
The governor of Russia's Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratiev, reported that a fire near Gelendzhik was extinguished after a drone crashed a few kilometers from Putin's palace.
According to Kondratiev, more than 500 people fought the fire over four days. Around 100 pieces of equipment were used, including two Mi-8 helicopters.
It is reported that a drone crashed on the morning of August 28 near the village of Krynytsia, located less than 10 kilometers in a straight line from Cape Idokopas, where Putin’s palace is situated.
As a result of the fire, more than 20 people were trapped on the shore and were evacuated.
The outlet notes that, amid frequent drone attacks along the Krasnodar region’s coast, Putin has largely stopped flying to Sochi. He last visited his official residence, Bocharov Ruchey, in March 2024.
Currently, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has traveled to China for a four-day visit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping invited him to attend a parade marking the anniversary of the end of World War II.
It should be noted that on August 28, it was also reported that a forest fire broke out near Putin’s palace in Gelendzhik following the drone attack. The fire covered an area of up to 3.2 hectares.

'I tuned into an alien mothership that is heading for Earth during my ghost hunt'

A paranormal investigator claims he was sent a chilling warning about an approaching 'alien mothership' during a live investigation.
Charlie Harker said his electronic device called a portal box picked up the eerie message at his home in Bloxwich, Walsall.
The 60-year-old said he was trying to contact the dead when the message came through the device's speakers, which said "be warned, we're coming".
Mr Harker, who works as a cleaner by trade, believes the message is linked to reports of an unidentified flying object (UFO) heading towards Earth - which has generated theories that it could be a spacecraft.
Mr Harker said he didn't think too much of the message until he came across podcasts and social media posts discussing the issue, with the UFO said to arrive on Earth around November.
"I had no idea what it was on about, I thought it was something to do with the paranormal, like it might be an evil spirit, and then it just came out with, 'Aliens are coming'," said Charlie.
"It's supposed to arrive in November, they are saying."
Mr Harker said his portal box - which works by scanning radio frequencies and thus allegedly allows spirits to form phrases - also spoke of there being an "invisible planet".
He added: "We can look at it as fake, we can look at it as real."
Mr Harker's interest lies in the paranormal and he says extra-terrestrials are not his "type of thing" - but the incident has gotten him interested in this particular case.
"Because it happened on that particular night and put us on a different wavelength, we have to go into it further," said Mr Harker.
He is planning to do a follow-up live investigation on Sunday on his Facebook page called Afterlife Paranormal, in the hopes of trying to learn more information via his portal box.
According to reports, this UFO was first discovered on July 1 and is believed to be only the third so-called 'interstellar' object spotted in our universe.
The object has been dubbed 3I/ATLAS and is thought to be travelling at 135,000 miles per hour.
Although there has been pushback from some scientists who believe the object is just a comet, professor Avi Loeb from Harvard University warns this appearance could be "technological design".
He said: "It could come to save us or to destroy us.
"We better be prepared for both possibilities and verify that all interstellar objects are just rocks."
And he added: "An encounter with an interstellar, alien technology is a blind date of astronomical proportions.
"You don’t know what you will meet, because our imagination is limited to our experience on Earth."
Mr Harker has investigating the paranormal for years and regularly carries out investigation at his home and from different locations.
