Xi calls on SCO members to challenge Western dominance

Members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) should continue to resist “hegemonism and power politics” to help build a fairer international system, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday as he opened the group leaders’ meeting in Tianjin.

Delivering a keynote speech to leaders and representatives of member and partner nations, Xi invoked what he called the “Shanghai spirit” of “mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of shared development.”

Xi praised the progress made by the SCO since its founding in 2001 and outlined new priorities. He said members must “oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices” – terms often used by Beijing to criticize US and Western policies.

“We should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and make the global governance system more just and equitable,” he added.

The Chinese leader also urged members to pursue win-win cooperation while respecting their national differences, strengthening exchanges between their peoples, and pushing for greater efficiency and evidence-based policymaking within the SCO.

The regional group’s collective economic output has reached $30 trillion, Xi noted, adding that its global influence was expanding accordingly. Members are working together to address challenges including security, environmental issues, and innovation, he added.

China’s cumulative trade with SCO nations has surpassed $2.3 trillion, Xi said, highlighting projects under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative and other mechanisms. He pledged further investments, including in education and the training of scientific and engineering skills required to sustain future growth.

More than 20 nations from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are participating in the Chinese-hosted gathering, as well as representatives of leading international organizations, including the UN and ASEAN.

For example, Iran eliminated its inventory of medium-enriched uranium, cut its low-enriched uranium by 98%, capped future enrichment at 3.67%, and rendered its heavy-water reactor inoperable by filling it with concrete. In exchange, Iran was granted sanctions relief.

Conservatives Rage After UK Court Of Appeal Rules With Govt To Keep Migrant Hotel Open

The Court of Appeal ruled on Friday that a temporary injunction obtained by Epping Forest District Council against the continued use of the Bell Hotel to house asylum seekers should be overturned.

During the hearing, Home Office lawyers argued that the human rights of asylum seekers outweighed the council’s decision to close the hotel. The council had insisted that Somani Hotels, which owns the Bell Hotel, was in breach of planning law by changing its use to accommodate migrants. But the judges found that the lower court, which granted the injunction, had made errors that “undermine his decision.”

The ruling lifts the interim injunction and scraps a Sept. 12 deadline for asylum seekers to be relocated. A final appeal hearing will take place later this year.

The hotel has been at the center of controversy in recent months after anti-immigration protests erupted in the town, following the arrest of one of its occupants on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

The Court of Appeal’s decision has sparked anger among opposition lawmakers, who accused Labour of prioritizing the rights of illegal immigrants over the safety of local communities.

Robert Jenrick, the Conservatives’ shadow justice secretary, posted: “Starmer’s government has shown itself to be on the side of illegal migrants who have broken into our country.”

Rupert Lowe, an MP and leader of Restore Britain, wrote: “A Government against its own people. No more appeals, court cases, or debates. We must deport the illegal migrants. Not some of them. Not most of them. All of them.” He later called for the Home Office to be abolished.

Mossad 'factory' churned out fake Australian passports

A former Mossad officer has alleged the Israeli spy agency has its own "passport factory" to create or doctor passports for use in intelligence operations.

Relations between Australia and Israel are under strain after three Australian passports were apparently used by suspects in the killing of top Hamas leader Mahmoud Al Mabhouh in Dubai last month.

Dubai police say they are 99 per cent sure Mossad was behind the operation to smother Mabhouh with a pillow in his hotel room.

Victor Ostrovsky, a case officer at Mossad for several years in the 1980s, says he has no doubt Australian passports have been forged or fraudulently used for similar operations in the past.

"They need passports because you can't go around with an Israeli passport, not even a forged one, and get away or get involved with people from the Arab world," he said.

"They'll shy away right away. So most of these [Mossad] operations are carried out on what's called false flag, which means you pretend to be of another country which is less belligerent to those countries that you're trying to recruit from.

"If they can obtain blank passports, which they have in the past from Canada, from England, they do. If not, they just manufacture them."

He says a company within Mossad headquarters is dedicated to forging passports.

"They create various types of papers, every kind of ink. It's a very, very expensive research department," he said.

He says the manufactured passports are almost identical to the originals.

"If they create a passport at a top level for use of that nature … I don't think anybody will be able to find the difference," he said.

Mr Ostrovsky says fraudulent Australian passports have been used regularly.

"Consider the fact that Australians speak English and it's an easy cover to take, very few people know very much about Australia," he said.

"You can tell whatever stories you want. It doesn't take much of an accent to be an Australian or New Zealander, or an Englishman for that matter. And I know people had been under Australian cover not once [but] quite a few times. So why not use it?"

He says Mossad chooses which passports to forge based on the cover agents need and the operation they are involved in.

NGO: Israel's 11,000 Palestinian security prisoners breaks record

Administrative detention numbers have surged in Israel, now three times higher than during the Second Intifada, reports HaMoked.

The 11,040 Palestinian security prisoners are the most Israel has ever held, the NGO HaMoked said on Monday, using numbers it received from the Israel Prisons Service (IPS).

56% or 6,239 of those prisoners are being held outside of standard criminal procedures, while 4,801 or 44% are being held in the context of standard criminal proceedings.

Of the 6,239, 3,577 are being held in administrative detention - also close to highs other than during the First Intifada of 1987-1991 - while 2,662 are being held as unlawful combatants.

The number of administrative detainees now dwarfs the number of Palestinians held during the Second Intifada by around three times, when the numbers only broke the 1,000 level.

Even during the later years of the Second Intifada and during the Knife Intifada of 2015-2016, the number of administrative detainees was more in the 700 range.

In quieter years over the last two decades, the numbers were usually down, closer to 200-300 for a time, and in the Oslo period of the 1990s, the numbers dropped to single or double digits.

In addition, HaMoked estimated that there are a few hundred additional Palestinian Gazans being held by the Israeli military as unlawful combatants, something which has been fairly consistent during the war, either due to the time it takes to process and transfer them into IPS custody or because the IPS does not have enough cell space.

Neither administrative detainees nor unlawful combatants receive regular criminal proceedings, and both are highly criticized globally. But whereas administrative detainees have set rules, such as that their cases are reviewed by IDF judges usually every three to six months to potentially free them, unlawful combatants can potentially be held for longer, and there are less clear procedures about handling them.

Palestinian terrorists from the West Bank are more likely to be placed in administrative detention, while terrorists from Gaza are more likely to be declared unlawful combatants.

Israel justifies administrative detention, saying that there are terrorists who would be dangerous to release, but who could not be convicted in regular court proceedings without blowing the lid off intelligence sources and methods.

Hamas forces do not wear uniforms

Regarding unlawful combatants, Israel says that Hamas terrorists from Gaza are in some ways like enemies from a foreign state, but also do not deserve prisoner of war status because Hamas forces do not wear uniforms and target civilians in violation of the laws of war.

Critics say that Israel uses these categories in order to whitewash keeping Palestinians in prison for extended periods of time, who it cannot, or does not want to, take the trouble of bringing evidence against in court.

Besides the above Palestinians, thousands of Palestinian prisoners who Israel was holding at different points during the war have been released either because of a lack of cell space or in hostage exchange deals in late 2023 and earlier this year.

Thousands of Palestinians have also been indicted, convicted, and sentenced for terror crimes.

Haniyeh’s family business in Israel

This is not the first time that someone related to Haniyeh has managed to live in Israel. In 2024, Sabah Abed al-Salam Haniyeh, the sister of Ismail, was arrested after being accused of identifying with a terrorist organization and incitement.

During a joint operation by the Israeli Police and the Shin Bet, her home was raided on suspicion of maintaining ties with Hamas operatives, identifying with the terrorist organization, and inciting violence.

During the search, the forces found documents, media equipment, phones, and other materials, as well as evidence linking her to serious security offenses. Hundreds of thousands of shekels in cash were also found at her home.

A few weeks later, the State Attorney's Office submitted an indictment against her to the Be'er Sheva Magistrate's Court, accusing her of identifying with a terrorist organization and incitement.

According to the indictment, Sabah Haniyeh sent WhatsApp messages to dozens of contacts, including her brother, praising, supporting, and encouraging Hamas' actions on the October 7 massacre just two days after, on October 9.

Israel’s foreign influence is the most unrelenting in US history

There are a handful of times in which external powers tried to steer us, but there is no comparison to the Likud Party's grip on Washington

In his farewell address to the nation, George Washington included a special pleading:

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government."

It is said that Israel’s influence over American military and foreign affairs is unique — that no small state in modern times has exerted such control over the affairs of a great power. This is a troubling claim. But is it true?

For sure, foreign powers historically have attempted to influence American politics, to steer, or even control our actions in the world. But their interventions never came close to matching Israel’s sustained sway over Washington’s power centers. This intricate grip has now lasted generations and has prevented the U.S., time and again, from acting in its own security interests in domestic as well as foreign affairs.

A comparative analysis would be useful in order to fully grasp the gravity of the situation. Let’s look at four instances in which foreign powers tried to intervene in U.S. politics. How aggressive were they? How much did they threaten American security? Was U.S. sovereignty ultimately damaged?

Only then can we fully take the measure of Israeli influence operations today.

France tries to manipulate its weaker client

Bourbon France was a decisive factor in securing American independence in 1783. Ten years later, France was torn by revolution and invaded by European great power monarchies. In desperation, France tried to suborn its former client, the United States. “Citizen” Edmond-Charles Genêt was sent to petition President Washington for help; instead, he lured Americans into a privateer scheme to raid British and Spanish shipping.

Washington had just declared neutrality in France’s European war. This was a naked bid to drag America into war. Washington quickly quashed Genet; yet the new United States continued to benefit from its fraternal relationship with France. There was the Louisiana Purchase, and then, in 1812, Madison took the U.S. to war with Britain in the belief that Napoleon was about to defeat America’s old nemesis. Hence, American strategy remained under the long, yet mutually beneficial, shadow of its old French patron — and then, after just a generation or so, it was gone.

Police are confident accused cop killer Dezi Freeman is being harboured by a member of the public

A friend of accused cop killer Dezi Freeman said the fugitive could potentially have a large network of supporters helping him stay hidden from cops.

Police today revealed they believe Freeman is being harboured by a member of the public after issuing a candid plea .

Despite Freeman's well-documented dislike for cops, Evans said he never believed it would come to this.

"[I was] pretty shocked when I saw it," Evans said.

"I just didn't expect a shooting, I didn't expect a shoot out like that."

The suspected gunman is accused of killing two Victoria Police officers Neal Thompson, 59, and Vadim De Waart, 35, after police attended his property in Porepunkah to execute a warrant on August 27.

After pleading directly with Freeman to surrender, Superintendent Brett Kahan today widened the net and asked anyone who knows where he is to come forward.

"I am going to change tack a little bit, and read into this what you will," Kahan told media.

"I extend that invitation to anyone who is harbouring, considering harbouring or knows something about the people who are harbouring [Freeman].

"You are committing an extremely serious crime by harbouring or assisting in the escape of Dezi Freeman."

Kahan said he believes people know Freeman's whereabouts.

Police do not know if it is one person or multiple people potentially concealing Freeman's location.

"People know the whereabouts of the person who has killed two cops," he added.

"We are absolutely hunting for a fugitive and we will continue to do so."

A mobile police facility has been set up in Bright, around 5km from Porepunkah, to gather information from the public.

Kahan confirmed police are still operating under the assumption Freeman is alive.

He said specialist resources have scoured "every neck of the woods".

"There's certain areas in and around that dense forestland, which we know has previously been populated by the fugitive," he said.

Kahan also wouldn't confirm if Freeman's wife Mali is cooperating with police, despite her plea for Freeman to surrender yesterday.
