The Michigan Department of State is pleased to announce the launch of a new online option to better serve the needs of military and overseas voters. The new system will launch publicly on Monday, Sept. 15, 2025.

Developed in line with the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act(UOCAVA), the Electronic Delivery and Return Portal (EDARP) delivers ballots electronically to eligible voters and allows eligible overseas active military members the option to conveniently mark and return an absentee ballot to their clerk’s office electronically through a secure online portal.

Previously, Michigan’s military voters stationed away from home, including overseas, received their ballot electronically but were only permitted to return the ballot by mail, creating the potential for increased delays in ballot tabulation.

Registered overseas voters who maintain a permanent residence in Michigan may also access the portal to view and print their ballots to complete and mail to their local clerk. The new portal will be accessible through Michigan’s MILogin system, a single sign-on platform run by the State of Michigan’s Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) that provides secure online access to various state services and applications.

Netanyahu said to mull annexing West Bank parts in response to Palestine recognition

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly set to gather top ministers and aides for a discussion on Thursday in which they will explore the possibility of applying Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank.

The meeting, according to Hebrew media reports, is to focus on the implications of international recognition of a Palestinian state, and how Jerusalem may respond to such a move. Applying sovereignty to parts of the territory, a step tantamount to annexation, is one of multiple steps the small forum is reportedly to weigh.

The meeting comes ahead of this month’s United Nations General Assembly, where a wave of Western nations intend to recognize a Palestinian state against Israeli and American wishes.

It also comes as Palestinian officials are seeking to reverse the United States’ decision last week to bar Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and some 80 other officials from the UN meeting — Washington’s own response to the intended recognitions.

Multiple Palestinian sources said this week that the PA, which governs day-to-day affairs in parts of the West Bank, is working through various channels to persuade the Americans to lift visa restrictions on Abbas and other senior Palestinian officials.

Al-Sheikh wrote that Abbas had “categorically condemned violence and terrorism, including the attacks of October 7,” in June, according to Axios. He also wrote that the PA is “committed to peace” and establishing a demilitarized Palestinian state.

“The decision to revoke the visas of the Palestinian delegation — despite these clear commitments, reforms, and assurances — sends the wrong signal at a time when the entire region looks to the United States for leadership and fairness,” al-Sheikh wrote, according to Axios. “It risks silencing the Palestinian voice at the UN, precisely when constructive engagement is most needed to build momentum for peace.”

In addition, a senior Palestinian official close to Abbas told The Times of Israel that Arab states, including Gulf countries, are working to assist the PA on the issue.

The official, who asked to remain anonymous, added that the US move is “complicating matters, and we do not want things to become more complicated.” He said the PA is asking the US to “proceed in accordance with international law and the agreement between the UN and the United States,” referring to Washington’s obligation under its UN host country agreement to allow leaders to travel to New York for the General Assembly.

“We are determined that the voice of the Palestinian people will be heard, and that the Palestinian president’s speech will be delivered at the UN by any means possible,” he said, adding that a remote address by Abbas is one of the options being considered.

Travel agency Booking.com has taken action against a hotel in southern Italy and a hostel in Bosnia after the two venues refused to accept Israeli guests, apparently due to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, according to a Tuesday report.

It came as Spanish booking site eDreams announced that it would no longer list any Israeli guesthouses located in the West Bank.

In one incident, an Israeli woman was denied a Booking.com reservation for a hotel in Naples, while in another, a man from Israel was turned away at the front gate of a guesthouse in Bosnia, Channel 12 reported.

Anti-Israel and antisemitic incidents have spiked since the start of the war in Gaza, with critics blaming Israel for the ballooning humanitarian crisis and civilian death toll in the Palestinian coastal enclave.

According to the report, Booking said in a statement regarding the Naples case that every location advertised on its website must abide by a contract that includes “an unequivocal commitment to prevent in any way discrimination.”

When trying to book a room at the hotel, the Israeli woman was told during written communications that she cannot stay on the premises if she either did military service in the Gaza Strip or supports the Netanyahu government.

The tourist, identified only as Shir, told Channel 12 that she felt it was “serious and unacceptable discrimination against Israelis.”

During the doctors' rounds in a large pediatric ward of a hospital in central Israel, as I face a 1-year-old infant who is sitting in a new stroller, laughing and eating Bamba snacks, I find myself in a futile discussion with an anxious mother who doesn't want the child to be discharged, because he "isn't eating anything."

"But he's eating now," I tell her, "and we've already dealt with the illness that brought him here, and he looks great – healthy. It's not good to be in a hospital ward for no reason."

There's no chance of convincing her. "Doctor, Bamba is not food. Look, he's throwing his egg at me." "No problem," I reply, because I know she'll stay until he eats the egg. "Stay. Gladly," I add with a smile, feeling as if I'm choking inside.

This is a ward full of children who are actually healthy. At least almost all of them are. In most cases it would be possible to treat them in outpatient clinics; in most cases they could be treated with oral medications. Without infusions, without expensive blood tests and without complicated imaging. And many of them are hospitalized because of parental anxiety – simply because it's an option.

Despite the fact that public medicine in Israel is suffering from a significant economic deficit, it's still very "pampering" compared to many places in the world. But the disparity between the medicine I practice on a daily basis in this country, and what is happening in the Gaza Strip – just a few dozen kilometers from me – is totally insupportable and unacceptable.

In an article last Friday in Haaretz ("'Starvation Is Everywhere': Virtual Tours of Gaza Clinics Expose the Scale of the Horror"), reporters Nir Hasson and Yarden Michaeli joined a doctors' round, via video, in a pediatric ward of Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, the largest hospital in the southern Strip. Their harrowing virtual tour took place just days before an Israeli tank fired shells at the roof of the hospital this week, killing some 20 people and wounding dozens of others. Among the dead were four medical personnel and five journalists, including Moaz Abu Taha, the photographer who guided the Haaretz reporters through Nasser.

Top IDF Commander Opted Not to Boost Security After Visiting Nova One Hour Before October 7 Hamas Massacre

About an hour before the Hamas attack on the Nova music festival on the morning of October 7, the IDF commander in charge arrived at the site after receiving prior intelligence warnings, but he took no preemptive action, Haaretz has learned.

Lieutenant Colonel Haim Cohen, commander of the Northern Brigade in the Gaza Division, observed the massive crowds at the festival and noted that only a handful of police officers were on security duty. But Cohen told military investigators he had no information suggesting that he should act differently or order the festival to be dispersed. It has not yet been clarified exactly what intelligence information was disclosed to him that night.

The Nova party – where 378 people were killed and 44 were taken hostage into Gaza – became the deadliest site of the October 7 attacks.

An IDF investigation, obtained by Haaretz, determined that it was a mistake not to consider cancelling or dispersing the festival during the divisional assessment held that night. A deeper discussion might have led to such a decision, despite the division's limited understanding of Hamas' intentions and intelligence constraints.

The investigation also said that Cohen miscalculated when he did not assign a military force to the festival complex, given the size of the crowd, the timing and the sensitive location.

Cohen remained at his home in Tiberias, northern Israel, overnight into Saturday, October 7, 2023. Throughout the night, the Shin Bet, Military Intelligence and senior IDF command picked up alarming signs of unusual Hamas activity. Although not all the information was passed up the chain of command to Cohen, he decided at 3:13 A.M. for unclear reasons to drive from Tiberias to the division's distant southern base.

There were a handful of times when external powers tried to steer us, but there is no comparing the decades-long grip of the Likud Party on Washington

In his farewell address to the nation, George Washington included a special pleading:

"Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government."

It is said that Israel’s influence over American military and foreign affairs is unique — that no small state in modern times has exerted such control over the affairs of a great power. This is a troubling claim. But is it true?

For sure, foreign powers historically have attempted to influence American politics, to steer, or even control our actions in the world. But their interventions never came close to matching Israel’s sustained sway over Washington’s power centers. This intricate grip has now lasted generations and has prevented the U.S., time and again, from acting in its own security interests in domestic as well as foreign affairs.

A comparative analysis would be useful in order to fully grasp the gravity of the situation. Let’s look at four instances in which foreign powers tried to intervene in U.S. politics. How aggressive were they? How much did they threaten American security? Was U.S. sovereignty ultimately damaged?

Only then can we fully take the measure of Israeli influence operations today.

Pentagon Authorizes up to 600 Military Lawyers to Serve as Temporary Immigration Judges

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has approved sending up to 600 military lawyers to the Justice Department to serve as temporary immigration judges, according to a memo reviewed by The Associated Press.

The military will begin sending groups of 150 attorneys — both military and civilians — to the Justice Department “as soon as practicable,” and the military services should have the first round of people identified by next week, according to the Aug. 27 memo.

The effort comes as the Trump administration is cracking down on illegal immigration by ramping up arrests and deportations. And immigration courts already are dealing with a massive backlog of roughly 3.5 million cases that has ballooned in recent years.

At the same time, more than 100 immigration judges have been fired or left voluntarily after taking deferred resignations offered by the Trump administration, their union says. In the most recent round of terminations, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers said in July that at least 17 immigration judges had been fired “without cause” in courts across the country.

That has left about 600 immigration judges, union figures show, meaning the Pentagon move would double their ranks.

The Justice Department, which oversees the immigration courts, requested the assistance from the Defense Department, according to the memo sent by the Pentagon’s executive secretary to his DOJ counterpart. The military lawyers' duties as immigration judges will initially last no more than 179 days but can be renewed, it said.

A DOJ spokesperson referred questions about the plan to the Defense Department, where officials directed questions to the White House.

A White House official said Tuesday that the administration is looking at a variety of options to help resolve the significant backlog of immigration cases, including hiring additional immigration judges. The official said the matter should be “a priority that everyone — including those waiting for adjudication — can rally around.”

The memo stressed that the additional attorneys are contingent on availability and that mobilizing reserve officers may be necessary. Plus, the document said DOJ would be responsible for ensuring that anyone sent from the Pentagon does not violate the federal prohibition on using the military as domestic law enforcement, known as the Posse Comitatus Act.

The administration faced a setback on its efforts to use the military in unique ways to combat illegal immigration and crime, with a court ruling Tuesday that it “willfully” violated federal law by sending National Guard troops to Los Angeles in early June.

Cases in immigration court can take years to weave their way to a final determination, with judges and lawyers frequently scheduling final hearings on the merits of a case over a year out.

No-fly zone over Porepunkah extended as manhunt for armed Freeman continues

A no-fly zone stretching 7.5km around Porepunkah has been extended as police continue their desperate hunt for the armed fugitive Dezi Freeman.

Australian Defence Force specialists have been called in to help in the huge manhunt for alleged cop killer and sovereign citizen Dezi Freeman, more than a week after two officers were shot dead in rural Victoria,

Defence Minister Richard Marles said the ADF would provide a “planning specialist” to the manhunt at the request of Victoria Police.

“We’re also providing some air surveillance assets, again after a request from the Victoria Police,” Mr Males told ABC’s 7.30 program on Tuesday,

“The Australian Defence Force will work with the Victoria Police as they request our assistance in terms of the particular assets and capabilities that we have to bring Dezi Freeman to justice.”

‘Avoid the area’ and ‘remain vigilant’ warnings have been issued across large swathes of Victoria’s alpine region as the fugitive remains at large.

As of 8pm Tuesday the official ‘remain vigilant’ area spans over 5000km, stretching from Wangaratta to Beechworth, down to popular ski resorts Mount Buller and Mount Hotham.

“It is recommended that people travelling to Bright, Falls Creek or Mount Hotham avoid travelling through Porepunkah and instead, travel via Happy Valley Road at C534 and the Kiewa Valley Highway,” a police spokesman said.

A no-fly zone over Porepunkah has been extended until the end of Tuesday, as the manhunt for armed fugitive Dezi Freeman nears the end of its eighth day.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the extension was granted for “safety reasons” by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

“Given the suspect in this matter is heavily armed, this condition has been granted due to the risk to aircraft and drones, as well as potential implications associated with the suspect tracking police movements based off media coverage,” the spokeswoman said.
