Turkish physicist who worked at CERN goes missing after detention near Canadian border

August 31, 2025 04:55 PM GMT+03:00

The family of a Turkish physicist, who worked at prestigious research institutions including CERN and Fermilab, has not heard from him for four days after he was reportedly detained near the Canadian border, raising concerns about his safety and whereabouts.

Dr. Furkan Dolek, who holds advanced degrees in physics and has worked at major international research facilities, was last known to be in the Mohawk territory along the St. Lawrence River, according to his recent social media posts.

His family in Türkiye's Adana province says they fear for his life after losing contact.

Physicist reported safety violations at major research facilities

Dolek completed his master's degree at Çukurova University's Physics Department before receiving a full scholarship from Türkiye's Atomic Energy Authority to pursue doctoral studies abroad.

After completing his PhD in Switzerland, he was invited to Virginia Tech University in 2023 for academic research and also worked at CERN and Fermilab, facilities operated by the U.S. Department of Energy.

According to family accounts, Dolek reported safety violations and security gaps he discovered while working as a data specialist at the laboratories to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Following his whistleblower reports, he allegedly faced intense pressure and workplace harassment before being dismissed from his position.

Family says scientist faced retaliation after whistleblowing

His mother, Zuhal Dolek, said her son conducts important research in physics with over 500 publications and more than 20,000 citations.

"He worked as a researcher at CERN and then carried out work at Virginia Tech and Fermilab. He was targeted because he detected irregularities and radiation exposure incidents at these laboratories and reported them," she said.

The family alleges that Dolek's visa was canceled and his legal rights were stripped away, while Virginia Tech refused to provide him with an exit document.

He was briefly detained on charges of unauthorized laboratory entry, though the family says he had been permitted to collect his belongings from his office.

While he won the resulting lawsuit, the exit document was still not provided.

Parents sold home to support son's legal battle

Dolek's father, Hasan Dolek, said the family sold their home in Adana and sent $50,000 to support their son's legal struggles.

"Our scientist son's important work is evident. We sold our house in Adana to save him and sent $50,000. But right now we cannot get any news. We can't hire a lawyer there anymore," he said.

The family expressed concern that under the new refugee laws, Dolek could be sent to a detention facility in El Salvador.

They described how he struggled for 1.5 years without money, legal protection or permanent housing before beginning what he called a solo march to Canada to raise awareness about his situation.

Scientist posted distress call before disappearance

In his final social media posts, Dolek described his situation as a "distress call from a scientist" and said he was walking from Massena to the Mohawk territory despite exhaustion and blistered feet.

He had been documenting his journey and calling for international support, describing his case as a test of whether "international law and human rights can survive political games."

The physicist, who specializes in dark matter and high-energy physics research, has not been reachable since his reported detention four days ago.

His family says his phone and computer were confiscated, and they are appealing to authorities for help in locating him.

Earthquake swarm hits near Nevada supervolcano sparking fears of an eruption

Updated: 12:51 EDT, 2 September 2025

A pair of earthquakes have struck northern Nevada, adding to the dozens of tremors reported near an ancient supervolcano feared to be awakening.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) revealed that a 3.7 and 3.2-magnitude earthquake were recorded Tuesday morning just after 9:30am ET.

The pair of quakes struck approximately 30 miles from Valmy, a small town located along several active fault lines in the region, including the Fairview Peak-Dixie Valley Fault Scarps, the Central Nevada Seismic Belt, and the Pleasant Valley Fault.

The early morning earthquakes also took place just days after multiple seismic swarms struck the area, including 38 quakes recorded around Valmy in the last week alone.

Between Saturday and Monday, 28 earthquakes struck the northern Nevada area, including a 4.8-magnitude quake during Saturday afternoon's swarm.

Earthquakes between 3.0 and 5.0 in magnitude are often felt, but typically only cause shaking and minor damage.

The swarms were likely driven by tectonic forces along the fault systems of the Basin and Range Province.

However, many on social media have begun to sound the alarm that the ongoing earthquakes could signal an even bigger disaster, as the earthquake swarms have taken place just miles from the McDermitt supervolcano.

The McDermitt Volcanic Field is located in northern Nevada, near the town of McDermitt in Humboldt County, right along the border with Oregon.

This region is remote, with rugged desert landscapes, mountains, and the Owyhee River nearby.

The McDermitt Volcanic Field formed about 16 million years ago during a period of intense volcanic activity.

According to USGS, it was created when massive amounts of molten rock erupted, leaving behind a huge caldera, a sunken area shaped like a bowl.

Over millions of years, erosion and other geological changes have shaped the area, but the caldera's remnants are still visible.

That's when geologists believe the supervolcano last erupted, and there have been no recorded incidents since then, making it a very old and dormant volcanic system.

This week's earthquake swarms took place less than 75 miles from the supervolcano, leading some online to claim that a larger seismic event could be coming.

One X account called EarthquakePrediction, which has over 83,000 followers, claimed that Nevada's earthquake swarm might even sett of a 'major earthquake in California.'

Despite some fears, scientists believe the McDermitt Volcanic Field is highly unlikely to erupt again.

USGS monitors volcanic areas across the US, and McDermitt has not been listed among active or potentially active volcanoes, unlike places like Yellowstone or Long Valley.

NASA scientists have added to the skepticism that another volcanic eruption will strike Nevada in the near future, noting that this part of the state is more seismically active due to its many faults, not underground magma chambers.

'The Earth's crust in the Basin and Range Province is gradually expanding, cracking into hundreds of faults as it thins,' NASA officials explained in a statement.

'Over millions of years, land on one side of the faults rose, forming mountains, even as land on the other side sank into basins,' the space agency added.

'This ongoing activity makes the Basin and Range one of the most seismically active regions in the US.'

Arrests & RecoveriesScale of OperationsOther Action Against Drug PeddlersOfficial Statement

The crackdown has exposed a highly organized network involved in smuggling narcotics via drones across the International Border.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of SSP Kathua, Shobhit Saxena (IPS).

Acting on a tip-off regarding a narcotic consignment dropped in village Chhan Tanda, Hiranagar on July 29, 2025, police teams in coordination with BSF swiftly recovered 447 grams of opium.

An FIR No. 107/25 under sections 8/18/19 NDPS Act & 13 UAPA was registered at PS Hiranagar and investigation was initiated.

Arrests & Recoveries

Two couriers from Punjab — Sukhwinder Singh of Amritsar and Arshdeep Singh alias Raja of Gurdaspur — were the first to be arrested.

Their role was to pick up drone consignments and act as couriers. From their possession, 411 grams of heroin was recovered.

On their disclosure, drug trafficker Feroz Din alias Allu of Rajbagh, Kathua was arrested. He was in direct touch with a Pakistan-based handler.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the syndicate’s kingpin/financier from Tarn Taran, Punjab, who was responsible for channeling the proceeds of narcotics to Pakistan through hawala. Heroin and cash were seized during the arrests.

Scale of Operations

Investigations have revealed that the syndicate had already facilitated the supply of over 30 kg of heroin in J&K and Punjab through drone drops.

The accused are hardcore criminals who had been evading law enforcement by running a sophisticated, well-coordinated network.

Other Action Against Drug Peddlers

In a separate case under Police Post Nagri, Kathua, police arrested five accused linked to drug peddling and recovered heroin and cash.

Official Statement

A police spokesperson stated:

“This stringent action against drone dropping and drug trafficking reflects the relentless resolve of Kathua Police to dismantle narco-terror networks operating along the border.

Hollywood Beach lifeguards debut drone-based rescue system

Updated: September 2, 2025 at 1:43 PM

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Hollywood Beach officials say lifeguards have already made 134 rescues this year. Now, they’ve unveiled a new tool aimed at reaching people in danger even faster.

Up in the sky, it looks like an ordinary drone. But this is South Florida’s first drone-deployed personal safety device.

In a demonstration, officials showed how lifeguards can launch the drone and fly it out to a swimmer in distress.

The process took only moments, and the drone can travel up to two miles offshore.

Once it arrives, it drops a self-inflating floatation device that provides something for the swimmer to hold onto while rescuers head their way.

Officials say the drone will be especially useful when lifeguards are off duty or when swimmers are caught in rip currents.

“The faster you get to somebody the more chances they have a survival,” said Ocean Rescue Chief Joyce Fuhrman.

“Currents are extremely dangerous because you can be in waist deep water and you take one step forward suddenly you’re in a hole and that rip current will take you up to 200 yards out. That’s really far.”

Rescue officials caution the drones won’t be used in every situation.

Rain and high winds can limit their effectiveness, but on clear days, they say the new system could help save lives.

Swan-shaped drone unveiled in Poland: it is designed for reconnaissance

02.09.25 17:18

At the MSPO 2025 defense exhibition in Poland, a drone called Kaczka was unveiled.

This is reported by Defense Express, Censor.NET reports.

Despite its name, the platform features a top-mounted swan decoy. It was developed at the Military Institute of Land Forces.

The system is designed for covert reconnaissance and surprise strikes.

Kaczka has a control-link range of up to 5 km and also supports autonomous operation. The drone itself is a large box housing all onboard equipment, with a swan decoy mounted on top and a camera embedded in its head.

The drone can carry up to 10 kg of payload. Kaczka is amphibious: it can operate on water and, being wheeled, can also move on land.

"Overall, beyond its odd appearance, it has a peculiar and highly situational purpose.

Against the surrounding environment it will stand out and draw attention. From a certain distance it might be mistaken for a real swan, but up close Kaczka is unlikely to pass.

It should also be taken into account that, in any case, it will cost more than a standard FPV drone or other quadcopter, which have a much broader operational envelope and are far better suited for covert reconnaissance or surprise strikes.

Therefore, the rationale for employing this device remains in doubt," the outlet notes.

Car-sized spy airship powered by hydrogen to fly in NATO’s largest drone drill

Updated: Sep 02, 2025 08:17 AM EST

AFinnish technology company, Kelluu, uses an old idea to change modern surveillance. Located in Joensuu, Kelluu has created a small, hydrogen-powered, self-flying airship.

This airship is designed for long-lasting use, is environmentally friendly, and has advanced sensors. It is now gaining interest from defense organizations, including NATO.

The airship, about the size of a car at roughly 12 meters (40 feet) long, departs from the image of traditional blimps. Powered by hydrogen that provides both lift and fuel, the craft can remain aloft for more than 12 hours per mission, far outlasting conventional drones or helicopters.

Company officials say emissions are reduced by 99.5 percent compared with standard aerial platforms, making it one of the cleanest persistent surveillance solutions available.

Silent and durable by design

Built with a patented hydrogen-safe structure, the airship is designed to fly quietly and safely in various conditions, including sub-zero Arctic environments.

Its compact frame makes it more deployable than large blimps, while its low-noise operation offers civilian and defense surveillance advantages.

Kelluu operates Northern Europe’s only airship factory in Joensuu, where it produces the hydrogen-powered fleet. The company maintains bases in Finland and Sweden, with plans for further international expansion.

Despite its modest size, the platform can carry payloads of up to 6 kilograms (13 pounds), enabling multi-sensor missions.

Configurations can include LiDAR, spectral cameras, and thermal imagers.

One of its standard options is the AgEagle RedEdge-P multispectral camera, which captures high-resolution RGB and multispectral imagery with pixel-aligned outputs for mapping and monitoring.

With these tools, Kelluu airships can create digital twins of areas up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) in diameter from a single station.

Finnish mining company Terrafame has used the system to generate 3D digital models of a 60-square-kilometer industrial site, helping monitor slope stability and optimize operations.

The company highlights forestry health monitoring, infrastructure inspections, agricultural mapping, and security patrols as prime civilian uses.

In forestry, the sensors can detect bark beetle infestations and provide precision crop mapping in agriculture.

Kelluu describes its platform as a data-as-a-service system, with airships operating autonomously while artificial intelligence processes the information they collect.

Expanding into defense

Though initially focused on civilian applications, Kelluu’s autonomous airship has drawn increasing interest from defense organizations.

The platform is set to participate in NATO’s Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS 25) exercise in Portugal, one of the alliance’s largest trials of unmanned technologies.

In that setting, Kelluu will demonstrate how its endurance and GNSS-denied navigation capabilities could support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in contested zones.

Unlike satellites, which are limited by weather, or drones, which face endurance constraints, the hydrogen airship can persistently monitor below the clouds, providing a continuous flow of intelligence.

Kelluu’s work reflects a growing trend in Europe: small technology firms developing platforms that serve commercial and defense needs.

The company was recently selected for NATO’s DIANA innovation accelerator, a program that supports dual-use technologies.

It also participated in Atlantic Trident 25, a multinational exercise involving US, British, French, and Finnish forces, the first time a hydrogen-powered autonomous airship took part in such a drill.

The platform’s advantages come from its endurance, silence, and flexibility blend. Bridging the gap between drones and satellites offers NATO and civilian agencies a persistent, low-emission surveillance solution.

Hydrogen power allows Kelluu’s airship to fly longer, quieter, and cleaner than most conventional aerial platforms. It may not replace existing systems, but it provides a valuable complement in areas where endurance and resilience are critical.

Kelluu’s hydrogen airship is becoming part of a new group of unmanned vehicles. It is used for tasks like industrial mapping and international defense exercises. Lighter-than-air flight is making a comeback with new technology.

The Voynich manuscript: alien field book or medieval hoax?

September 2, 2025

Probably NOT an ancient D&D manual.

The Voynich manuscript, otherwise known as MS 408 of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University, is perhaps one of the most mysterious and baffling texts in the world.

Carbon-dated to the 15th century, the vellum consists of around 240 pages, bound on one side, with some of the pages acting as foldouts.

Within the manuscript is an indecipherable text and bizarre, hand-painted illustrations, including some of what appear to be plants and animals that don’t actually exist.

Based on the subject matter of the illustrations, scholars have taken to organizing the Voynich manuscript into six distinct sections:

botanical and herbological, astronomical and astrological, biological and balneological (referring to the treatment of disease by bathing), cosmological, pharmaceutical, and the last containing various recipes.

No one knows exactly what it was about or why it was created.

The bizarre nature of the Voynich manuscript’s contents and the text’s resistance to decryption have led to wild speculation on its origins. S

ome believe the text, conceptualized as its own language dubbed “Voynichese,” is the lost language of a civilization akin to the fabled Atlantis or Lemuria.

Terence McKenna, ethnobotanist and countercultural icon, once called the Voynich manuscript “the limit text of Western occultism,” and speculated that it was non-human in origin.

Siloe, a publishing house which produced a facsimile edition of the manuscript, even goes so far as to claim that, “One of the most popular myths about the Voynich Manuscript is that it was written by extraterrestrials.”

Tracing a mystery

The Voynich manuscript was first shown to the public in 1921 at the College of Physicians in Philadelphia, as part of the collection of Wilfrid Voynich, an antiquarian book dealer and the manuscript’s namesake, who acquired it in 1912 from the Jesuit Collegium Romanum library.

The manuscript bears the ex libris — a bookplate denoting ownership — of Peter Beckx, Superior General of the Jesuit order from 1853 until his death in 1887.

An alchemist from Prague, Georgius Barschius, is the earliest confirmed owner of the Voynich Manuscript, although there are several theories as to who ultimately authored the work.

When Voynich acquired the manuscript, it also contained a cover letter from Bohemian doctor, rector of the University of Prague, and official physician to the Holy Roman Emperor, Johannes Marcus Marci, addressed to Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher, which provides some clues to the Voynich manuscript’s provenance:

“Dr. Raphael, a tutor in the Bohemian language to Ferdinand III, then King of Bohemia, told me the said book belonged to the Emperor Rudolf and that he presented to the bearer who brought him the book 600 ducats.

He believed the author was Roger Bacon [a Medieval philosopher and physician] …”

There’s no evidence to suggest Bacon was the author, though Voynich promoted the idea that Rudolf II had purchased the manuscript from English scientist and occultist John Dee, based on the fact that Dee was known to possess many of Bacon’s works.

Dee was, however, a meticulous record-keeper and never mentioned the Voynich manuscript or said anything to suggest he was in possession of it.

Hidden language or hoax?

So what exactly is the Voynich manuscript? What was its purpose? Researchers consider several possibilities:

the Voynich manuscript was written in a natural but unknown language; it was written in a natural language or a constructed language which may have been encrypted; or the Voynich manuscript was made to resemble a natural or constructed language, but it is in fact nonsense, i.e. a Medieval hoax.

Despite decades of linguistic, cryptographic, and statistical analysis, there is no consensus as to which of these explanations is the most plausible.

Let’s consider the hypothesis that the Voynich manuscript is written in a language, whether a known natural language, an unknown natural language, or a constructed language.

All languages obey certain principles, like vowel harmony and syllable frequency. Statistical and linguistic analysis of the text has suggested certain similarities to several known natural languages.

It’s also been argued that the “word entropy” of the Voynich Manuscript — the degree of relative uncertainty with respect to what word will appear next in a sequence relative to the previous words — is consistent with what is found in either English or Latin.

>>23540392

Back in 2014, the late Stephen Bax, a professor of Applied Linguistics at Bedfordshire University, even announced that he had deciphered 10 words from the Voynich manuscript and that his research “shows conclusively that the manuscript is not a hoax, as some have claimed, and is probably a treatise on nature, perhaps in a Near Eastern or Asian language.”

However, Gordon Rugg, an academic with degrees in linguistics and French, argues there’s serious reason to doubt Bax’s claims, and that, “This is clearly not a language. It’s just too different from all the known languages of the world.”

For example, if we consider the botanical pages, we can make reasonable assumptions about what the text for those pages may be trying to communicate — the names of plants, descriptions of their properties, and how they might be used medicinally.

But Rugg points out there just isn’t “any pattern of particular words showing up mainly within particular sections of the manuscript, in the way that you’d expect if the plant pages really were about plants.”

Another oddity of the Voynich manuscript is the syllable frequency. Within a given text written in a specific language, if you make a scatter plot of the frequency of syllables, it will remain consistent throughout.

Rugg shows, though, “if you plot the distributions of four frequently occurring Voynich manuscript syllables, their frequency varies dramatically across sections of the manuscript, often with very abrupt transitions.”

If the Voynich Manuscript actually is written in a natural or constructed language, it almost certainly has to have been encrypted. The problem there is that all other examples of Medieval ciphers have long since been decoded.

Even the Vigenère cipher, invented in 1563 and once considered undecipherable, was cracked by German cryptographer and archeologist Friedrich Krasiski in 1863, without the aid of modern computational analysis.

If the Voynich manuscript is an encrypted language written by a Medieval scribe, it would have to be a remarkable example of cryptography unlike any other of the time.

Which leaves us with the hypothesis that the Voynich Manuscript is a meaningless hoax. Can this account for all its peculiarities, including the seemingly nonrandom nature of the text and the statistical anomalies present?

Elements of Voynichese have been shown to be consistent with text produced by some form of automatic writing, rather than purely stochastic (i.e. random) means.

Some researchers have even offered a means by which the text of the Voynich manuscript could have been produced, through a relatively simple process such as self-citation — in which the writer generates large parts of the text simply by copying and modifying characters previously appearing within the same section.

The idea that the Voynich manuscript is a Medieval hoax is not as far-fetched as it may seem.

At the time, books were all written and copied by hand, and therefore were incredibly expensive, costing as much as a modern home, so it’s easy to imagine why someone might create a fictional, mysterious manuscript.

Books were works of art, usually lavishly decorated, and the possessions of the rich and powerful.

By contrast, the Voynich manuscript, according to philosopher Justin Sledge of the YouTube channel Esoterica, is “crude, even by Medieval standards.” The vellum of the Voynich Manuscript is of middling quality and unevenly cut.

The inks and pigments used in the calligraphy and illustrations are also wholly unremarkable, containing neither rare nor expensive minerals or chemicals, while both the script and the illustrations themselves are rather plain and unimpressive compared to similar works of the time.

All this suggests that, while it certainly required a financial backer to afford the vellum (treated animal skin), cost evidently was cut where it could be, and if the expectation was to pass the Voynich manuscript off as a rare and unusual book, the expectation that it would sell for a very high price may have justified the initial cost to produce.

If in fact the Voynich manuscript sold for 600 ducats in the 17th century, that would have been the equivalent of 2.1 kg of gold at the time, which today would be worth almost $150,000.

Ultimately, we must consider which is more likely: that the Voynich Manuscript was written in an unknown language unlike any other; that it’s written in a known language and encrypted to such a degree that it far surpasses all other ciphers of the Medieval era and even some modern ones; or that it’s ultimately a collection of meaningless symbols composed in such a way as to resemble a language, and exotic enough that people believe, even hundreds of years later, that it’s more profound and meaningful than it actually is?
