Amgen to invest $600 million in new research and development facility in California

-Amgen said it will spend more than $600 million to build a new research and development facility at its headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California.

-It is the latest in a string of new U.S. investments by the pharmaceutical industry as President Donald Trump threatens to clamp down on the industry with tariffs on pharmaceuticals imported into the country.

-Amgen said construction of the facility will begin in the third quarter of this year and will create hundreds of U.S. jobs.

Amgen on Tuesday said it will spend more than $600 million to build a new research and development facility at its headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California, the latest in a string of new U.S. investments by the pharmaceutical industry.

Drugmakers have been scrambling to boost their presence in the U.S. as President Donald Trump threatens to clamp down on the industry with tariffs on pharmaceuticals imported into the country. Trump has said those levies will incentivize companies to re-shore production at a time when domestic drug manufacturing has shrunk dramatically over the past decade.

In a release, Amgen said construction of the facility will begin in the third quarter of this year and will create hundreds of U.S. jobs.

Notably, the facility is not a manufacturing plant, but it will allow researchers, engineers and scientists to collaborate on finding next-generation drugs for patients with “the most serious diseases,” according to the company. Amgen said the building features “advanced automation and digital capabilities,” which will give scientists the necessary tools for that research and development.

“At Amgen, we’re continuing to invest in the future of American science and innovation,” CEO Bob Bradway said in the release. “The center will empower our scientists with the tools and collaborative environment they need to shape the next era of scientific discovery and advance medicines that improve human health.”

Amgen said that since the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, it has invested almost $5 billion in direct U.S. capital expenditures. In April, the company announced a $900 million expansion of its Ohio biotech manufacturing facility. In December, the drugmaker announced it would spend $1 billion to build a second drug substance plant in Holly Springs, North Carolina.

Those investments come after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in August launched a program that aims to make it easier for companies to set up new drug manufacturing plants in the U.S. The White House estimates it can currently take five to 10 years to build new manufacturing capacity for pharmaceuticals, which it previously called “unacceptable from a national-security standpoint.”

Inside Arnold Schwarzenegger's quest to terminate California redistricting plan as he battles Gavin Newsom and defends 'under threat' legacy

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking the fight to incumbent Gavin Newsom over his redistricting plan to protect his legacy, according to one strategist.

The movie star, 78, has recently bounced back on to the Golden State political scene after Newsom called a special election to ask voters to approve new House boundaries.

Most recently, the Republican shared an image of himself working out in a black t shirt with the words: 'F*** the politicians. Terminate gerrymandering', with a red and blue fist across it.

Newsom’s plan, if approved, would involve the replacement of the current nonpartisan redistricting commission, which is responsible for drawing boundaries.

Schwarzenegger, one of the most notable champions of that commission, is taking the fight to Newsom in hopes of protecting his own legacy, according to former Republican strategist Dan Schnur.

He told The Hill: ‘'Schwarzenegger was and is a Republican, but there are certain issues that separate him pretty dramatically from the party mainstream.

‘One of those was his work on climate change legislation, but his reform legacy might be what makes him most proud. He sees it as under threat.’

The Republican hasn't committed to any formal campaigns and isn't planning on setting up his own committee, his representative said.

The actor said told the Houston Chronicle earlier this month that both California and Texas are serving power over the public.

'It's not a battle between Democrats and Republicans. This is a battle between the politicians and the people. I go with the people.'

'I just say very simply, it is very wrong what they're doing to Texas and it is very wrong what they're trying to do in California. It is not at all serving the people. It is serving the party.'

Newsom's plans are a direct response to a similar Republican led motion in Texas, backed by Trump, which has since passed, as his party look to cling on to their slim House majority in the upcoming midterms.

The California Democrat - a vocal adversary of Donald Trump - introduced his 'Election Rigging Response Act' to Golden State voters at a campaign-style event.

The act, which will go before voters in November, would mean California would temporarily adopt new congressional districts through 2030 if other states - such as Texas - did the same.

'We're giving the people of this state the power to save democracy, not just in California, but all across the United States of America,' Newsom said.

Democrats only need to flip three House seats to regain control of the chamber for the 2026 election.

Newsom encouraged Californians and residents of other blue states to 'stand up' against the efforts led by Texas, but are also being considered in other states.

'He's going to lose the midterms, he knows de facto his presidency ends in 17 months,' Newsom said. 'Why else would he try to rig the system?'

Newsom offered a compromise to Trump by promising to call off redistricting efforts in California if GOP-led states do the same.

‘But if the other states call off their redistricting efforts, we will happily do the same. And American democracy will be better for it.’

With the Trump-backed plot in Texas now passed, Governor Greg Abbott declared that it will create fairer representation in the state.

In a video to his social media, Abbott called the plan 'a big beautiful map' seemingly a reference to Trump's 'big, beautiful bill'.

If approved, a new California map would take effect only if a Republican state does its own redistricting. It would remain through the 2030 elections.

After that, Democrats say, they would return mapmaking power to the independent commission voters approved in 2008.

Trump has urged other Republican-run states to redraw maps, even sending Vice President JD Vance to Indiana to pressure officials there.

In Missouri, according to a document obtained by The Associated Press, the state Senate received a $46,000 invoice to activate six redistricting software licenses and provide training for up to 10 staff members.

Democratic state lawmakers fled from Texas to deny the GOP the quorum necessary to vote on legislation in the state capital.

Texas Representative Sues Newsom Over California Redistricting

A congressman from Texas is asking a federal judge to block a retaliatory move by California to wipe out Republican congressional gains the Trump administration hopes to secure through Texas’ controversial mid-decade redistricting.

California’s response to Texas in the form of a constitutional amendment election is “plainly unconstitutional and retaliatory,” Rep. Ronny Jackson (R) said in a lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

If California succeeds, Jackson says it will dilute his power as a Republican member in the House and leave him vulnerable to losing his chair on two subcommittees.

Jackson filed the lawsuit in his hometown Amarillo, Texas, a single-judge division in the Northern District of Texas. The case is assigned to Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, an appointee of President Donald Trump favored by conservative litigants.

The tit-for-tat between the two large states could determine which party controls the House after the 2026 midterm elections.

The challenge filed Aug. 29 comes days after California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed legislation on Aug. 21 initiating a statewide election in November on adopting a temporary Congressional map.

The move follows Trump persuading Texas lawmakers to approve a new map projected to give Republicans five additional Congressional seats.

Texas’ map, which Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed into law Aug. 29, is being challenged in a different federal court on the basis that it takes into account the racial makeup of voters.

Jackson, a physician, held the title of Physician to the President under the Obama Administration and the first Trump Administration. He joined Congress in 2021.

Jackson is represented by Epstein & Co. LLC and Taylor Dykema PLLC.

The case is Jackson v. Weber, N.D. Tex., No. 2:25-cv-00197, 8/29/25.

Israel begins ground operation in Gaza City, IDF says

Israel has begun its ground operation in Gaza City, Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said Tuesday.

"We are going to increase and enhance the strikes of our operation, and that is why we called you," Zamir said in Hebrew, addressing reservists who have been called up to serve in recent weeks. "We have already begun the ground operation in Gaza [City]."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also released a message addressing IDF reservists Tuesday.

"I want to strengthen and express my deep appreciation to you, IDF soldiers and reserve soldiers and your families," Netanyahu said in the video message in Hebrew. "Now we are facing the decisive stage. I believe in you, I trust you and the entire nation embraces you."

Netanyahu approved the military's plans to seize Gaza City last month.

Last month, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that Gaza City could "turn into Rafah and Beit Hanoun," areas that were destroyed by Israeli strikes, unless Hamas agreed to Israel's terms for a ceasefire.

"Soon, the gates of hell will open on the heads of Hamas' murderers and rapists in Gaza until they agree to Israel's conditions for ending the war, primarily the release of all hostages and their disarmament. If they do not agree Gaza, the capital of Hamas, will become Rafah and Beit Hanoun. Exactly as I promised – so it will be," Katz said in a post on X.

Israel's demands include the release of all hostages being held by Hamas, Hamas giving up control of governing the Gaza Strip and Hamas leaving the strip.

In May, Israel accepted a U.S.-proposed 60-day truce that included the release of only some hostages, but Hamas rejected the proposal because it did not guarantee a permanent ceasefire, something Hamas has called for in several rounds of negotiations. Netanyahu has never agreed to fully withdraw Israeli troops from the strip, which has left negotiations stalled.

On Tuesday, a senior adviser to Netanyahu told ABC News the Israeli government has outlined five principles they would need to see to end the war: the dismantling of Hamas' military and political capabilities; the immediate release of all hostages; the demilitarization of Gaza; Israel having "overriding security control" in Gaza for the "foreseeable future"; and the imposition of a civil authority in Gaza, which excludes Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.

At least 76 people were killed and 281 were injured in the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health. Among those killed were 12 people trying to get humanitarian aid and another 90 were injured, according to the health ministry.

Thirteen people, including three children, starved to death over the past 24 hours across Gaza, the ministry said Tuesday morning. Across Gaza, at least 361 people have died of malnutrition including 130 children since Oct. 7, 2023, the ministry said.

During the month of August, there were a total of 185 malnutrition-related deaths among adults and children in Gaza, the health ministry said, calling it "the highest number in months."

The world's leading authority on food crises the IPC determined there was a famine less than two weeks ago. The IPC itself does not declare a famine, but its famine determination can be used by states and bodies such as the United Nations to declare a famine.

Even before the famine determination was made, more than 100 aid groups described the dire food shortage in Gaza as "mass starvation," as the "Israeli government's siege starves the people of Gaza."

The organizations warned that some aid workers are now joining food lines in Gaza, saying they are "risking being shot just to feed their families." Repeated deadly shootings around aid distribution centers have killed hundreds, according to the United Nations.

Ilhan Omar Said It's 'Categorically False' To Call Her a Millionaire. Her Net Worth Just Reached Up to $30 Million, an Increase of at Least 3,500 Percent in One Year

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s personal fortune exploded to upwards of $30 million in 2024, the Minnesota Democrat disclosed just months after telling the press it is "ridiculous" and "categorically false" to say she is worth millions of dollars.

Omar reported in her latest financial disclosure that she and her husband, former political consultant Tim Mynett, accumulated a net worth at the end of 2024 ranging from at least $6 million to $30 million. Their wealth is derived almost entirely from the value of Mynett’s ownership stake in his two companies that, together, were worth no more than $51,000 at the end of 2023. The exact value of Omar’s personal fortune at the end of 2024 is unclear—lawmakers disclose the value of their holdings and debts in ranges. Still, the figures in Omar’s latest disclosures show that her and her husband’s net worth skyrocketed by at least 3,500 percent in just one year.

Omar’s extraordinary accumulation of wealth in 2024 could raise uncomfortable questions for the Minnesota Democrat, who in February told Business Insider that she has been the subject of a "coordinated right-wing disinformation campaign" that falsely claims she’s worth millions of dollars. Omar said any insinuation that she’s worth more than a few thousand dollars was "ridiculous" and "categorically false." She also took to X in February, challenging her followers to "maybe try checking my public financial statements and you will see I barely have thousands let alone millions."

Omar has her husband to thank for catapulting her to multimillionaire status in 2024. Mynett’s California-based winery eStCru LLC and venture capital firm Rose Lake Capital both achieved remarkable financial turnarounds in 2024. At the end of 2023, Mynett’s combined stake in both companies was worth no more than $51,000, the firms had less than $700 across all their bank accounts, and Mynett and his business partner, former DNC adviser Will Hailer, were saddled with lawsuits from investors claiming they defrauded them out of millions of dollars.

But by the end of 2024, Mynett’s combined stake in the two firms ballooned to anywhere between $6 and $30 million, and he and Hailer settled the lawsuits with cash settlements, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

Mynett’s business activities have long been a thorn in Omar’s side ever since they married in March 2020. They were both married to other people when they met, but the pair began an affair while Mynett served as a political consultant for Omar’s campaign, which paid his firm a whopping $2.9 million during the 2020 election cycle. But that was a fleeting arrangement. The financial ties between Omar's campaign and her new husband’s firm drew intense public scrutiny, and by the end of 2020, Mynett had exited the political consulting business and teamed up with Hailer to branch out into the winery and venture capital industries.

Mynett’s stake in his California winery, eStCru LLC, was worth no more than $50,000 at the end of 2023, Omar disclosed. The winery had just $650 in its bank account in February 2024, according to court documents obtained by the Minnesota Reformer, and was facing a lawsuit from Washington, D.C., businessman Naeem Mohd alleging Mynett and Hailer failed to pay up after promising to triple his $300,000 investment in the winery in just 18 months.

Mohd filed suit in California against Mynett, Hailer, and eStCru LLC in 2023 seeking $780,000 in damages. Mohd filed a motion to drop the suit in November 2024 after reaching a settlement with the winery, the Free Beacon has learned.

"We did settle and the amount was paid," Modh’s attorney, Faisal Gill, told the Free Beacon. Gill declined to share the exact amount of the settlement.

Mynett and Hailer did not return requests for comment.

Mynett’s other company, Rose Lake Capital, was in no better shape at the beginning of 2024. The venture capital firm was worth no more than $1,000 to Mynett at the end of 2023, Omar disclosed, and had just $42.44 in its bank accounts in February 2024, according to court documents obtained by the Minnesota Reformer.

By the end of 2024, Mynett’s stake in Rose Lake Capital ballooned to up to $25 million, Omar reported in her latest financial disclosure.

Mynett and Hailer formed Rose Lake Capital in 2022. It claims on its website to have $60 billion in assets under management and boasts an "extensive global network" and expertise at structuring "legislation." The firm’s advisory board includes two former Barack Obama ambassadors, Max Baucus and J. Adam Ereli, as well as former Amalgamated Bank CEO Keith Mestrich.

Shortly after Mynett launched Rose Lake Capital, Omar formed the U.S.-Africa Policy Working Group, where she leads a group of 20 members of Congress "committed to building partnership with the continent of Africa."

Since then, both Omar and Mynett have been pictured at events hosted by the EBII Group, a company that helps facilitate international investments in Africa. Omar was the keynote speaker at EBII’s African Leaders and Partners forum in 2023, where she advocated for U.S. investment in Africa and called on Congress to institute policies including a "$44 billion lifeline for African communities." During that same forum, Hailer, in his capacity as Rose Lake’s CEO, facilitated a panel discussion on the challenges faced by investors seeking to get their funds out of African countries.

Rose Lake Capital is Mynett and Hailer’s second venture capital firm. Their first, eSt Ventures, used to state on its website that it managed investment funds dedicated to Africa and cannabis.

Before Mynett left eSt Ventures in 2022, he and Hailer formed a subsidiary called Badlands Ventures to facilitate the firm’s marijuana investments. Badlands, in turn, received $3.5 million from a pair of South Dakota cannabis companies in early 2022 who later filed suit alleging the firm diverted $1.7 million of their investment "for purposes other than Badlands Ventures’ business."

When the cannabis investors demanded that money back, Hailer claimed the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had placed a hold on the funds, the lawsuit stated. OFAC administers trade sanctions on foreign countries and terrorist regimes engaged in "the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and other threats to the national security, foreign policy or economy of the United States."

In August, for example, OFAC sanctioned 18 entities and individuals connected to the Iranian regime, including a software holding company with ties to the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, which has committed "serious human rights abuses against the Iranian people and supporting terrorist groups," the Treasury Department said in a press release.

The cannabis investors did not sue Rose Lake Capital directly, but they named the firm in their lawsuit and it was subjected to discovery as the case proceeded.

Hailer settled that lawsuit for $1.2 million in August 2024, according to the Minnesota Reformer. The outlet reported that it’s unclear how Hailer was able to pay the settlement, noting court documents that showed he had less than $750 in his bank accounts at the beginning of 2024.

Omar’s office did not return a request for comment.
