Profile and Bio of Sir John Irving BellEarly Life and Education

Sir John Irving Bell, born July 1, 1952, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is a Canadian-British immunologist and geneticist. His parents worked in hematology and pharmacy. He attended Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario, and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1975 with a B Med Sci (Honours). As a Rhodes Scholar (1975–78), he studied medicine at Magdalen College, Oxford, followed by postgraduate training at the Royal College of Physicians in London and Stanford University, where he developed interests in immunology and genetics, focusing on autoimmune diseases.

Academic and Professional Career

Bell returned to Oxford in 1987 as a Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellow, joining the Institute of Molecular Medicine. In 1992, he became the Nuffield Professor of Clinical Medicine, and in 2002, he was appointed the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University, a prestigious position founded by King Henry VIII, which he held until March 2024. He succeeded Sir David Weatherall and was only the second Canadian after Sir William Osler to hold this role.

In 1993, Bell founded the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, a global leader in complex trait common disease genetics. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of immune activation in autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, and he has pioneered high-throughput genomic methodologies, including the 100,000 Genomes Project for Genomics England. He also led the development of Oxford’s Old Road Campus, one of Europe’s largest biomedical research centers.

Bell served as President of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2006–2011) and chaired the Office for the Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR) from 2006 to 2017. He was a key figure in the UK’s Life Sciences Strategy, appointed as one of two UK Life Sciences Champions in 2011, and authored the 2017 Life Sciences Industrial Strategy and the 2021 Life Sciences Vision. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a pivotal role in the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine development, lateral flow testing platforms, and the national molecular testing program.

In April 2024, Bell stepped down as Regius Professor to become President of the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) Oxford and Co-CEO of EIT Global, leading interdisciplinary teams to address global challenges in health, AI, sustainable agriculture, and more.

Industry and Advisory Roles

Bell has been a non-executive director at Roche since 2001 and previously served on AstraZeneca’s scientific advisory board (1997–2000). He is a founding director of biotech companies Oxagen, Avidex, and PowderJect, and serves on boards including Genomics England, UK Biobank, and Our Future Health. He chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Health Advisory Board (since 2012) and the Rhodes Trust. He has advised governments in the UK, Canada, Singapore, France, Sweden, and Finland on biomedical research.

Honors and Recognition

Bell was knighted in 2008 and appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 2015 for services to medicine, medical research, and the life sciences industry. In 2023, he was named a Companion of Honour in the King’s Birthday Honours. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2008), an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2009), and has received honorary degrees from multiple universities, including York, Warwick, Glasgow, Dundee, Imperial College, King’s College London, Toronto, and Alberta (D.Sc., 2003).

Personal Life

Bell resides in Wallingford, near Oxford, and is often seen rowing on the Thames with his wife. During the pandemic, his optimistic radio appearances, particularly on BBC Radio 4, gained public attention, boosting morale and influencing markets with his vaccine-related statements.

Is Sir John Bell a Don at Oxford?

In the Oxford context, a “don” typically refers to a senior academic, often a fellow or tutor at a college. Bell, as Regius Professor of Medicine (2002–2024) and an emeritus fellow of Magdalen College, qualifies as a don in this sense, given his senior academic status and long association with Oxford. He was also a senior member of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club Executive Committee and a member of the Governing Body of Christ Church, Oxford, further aligning with the role of a don. However, since stepping down as Regius Professor in March 2024 to lead EIT Oxford, he is no longer an active don, though he retains strong ties to the university.

Critical Note

A 2021 BMJ article raised concerns about transparency regarding Bell’s financial interests, particularly his ties to AstraZeneca and Roche, during his involvement in the UK’s Vaccine Taskforce. Oxford University and the government declined to disclose these interests, citing privacy policies, which sparked debate about conflicts of interest in public health roles. This underscores the need for critical scrutiny of such connections, though Bell’s contributions to science and public health remain widely recognized.

Sir John Bell: ‘Most people who have had the Covid vaccine are completely safe’

Oxford University and the government declined to disclose these interests, citing privacy policies, which sparked debate about conflicts of interest in public health roles. Bell states on live video

"We need a seasonal corona vaccine"

"These vaccines will likely not sterilize the entire population, will work in a percentage …" only 60~ percent ~ but we really don't know

to paraphrase, listen to the tape.

I think the gesture the interviewer makes after Bell speaks the truth out loud, (truth has a knack to burst out (subconscious) will surface, as the saying goes) , is a masonic hand sign.. Like "shut up"!
