One person is dead and six were taken to hospital after a mass stabbing in Hollow Water First Nation on Thursday morning.

The attacker is also dead, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release late that morning.

โ€œOur officers are gathering information to determine what exactly occurred this morning, and we will be providing a more detailed update early this afternoon,โ€ police said in the release.

โ€œOur sincere condolences to everyone within the community of Hollow Water First Nation and to everyone who has been affected by this senseless act of violence.โ€

A spokesperson for Shared Health said earlier in the morning that multiple patients with varying levels of injuries were being taken by air and land to Health Sciences Centre. STARS air ambulance took two people to HSC.

A Code Orange alert was issued for the Winnipeg hospital shortly after receiving reports of a mass casualty event in Hollow Water, which is located about 200 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. A code orange is called when a hospital needs to prepare for a potential sudden influx of patients.

Earlier Thursday, RCMP said in an initial news release that officers were dealing with โ€œa serious incidentโ€ in Hollow Water.

Mounties said at the time that residents can expect a heavy police presence in the community throughout the day and that there was no risk to public safety.

Provincial Road 304 was closed in both directions south of Black River First Nation as of about 8:20 a.m. RCMP said.

More to come.
