Western companies in Russia, security guarantees for Zelensky: Key takeaways from Putin’s Vladivostok speech

5 Sep, 2025 12:26

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered an address to the Eastern Economic Forum in the far eastern city of Vladivostok on Friday, which mostly focused on the domestic economy but also covered issues including the Ukraine conflict.

Putin highlighted a renewed interest from Western businesses in re-entering the Russian market, commented on the possibility of a meeting with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, and dismissed the need for Western troop deployments to support Kiev.

Here are the key takeaways from the Russian leader’s speech.

Poverty in decline

Putin reported that the poverty level in Russia has fallen from 11.3% to 7.2% over the past decade, calling the trend “positive.”

He also expressed confidence that inflation – currently estimated at 8.8% – could be lowered to a minimum while maintaining economic growth.

He stressed that his goal is to make Russia “an economy of high salaries.” “This is no populism, this makes sense economically,” Putin said, adding that the unemployment has decreased from 7% to 2.4%.

Western business wants return to Russia

Putin noted that numerous Western businesses had exited the country after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and the imposition of sanctions on Russia, “at a loss to themselves due to ‘political reasons.’”

However, he said many firms “are eagerly waiting for all these political restrictions to be lifted.” Putin also observed that some foreign companies “continue to operate in Russia despite political disagreements between their governments and Moscow” and “even want to expand cooperation.”

He stressed that Russia remains open to cooperation, particularly “with our friends.” “But we are not isolating ourselves from anyone… we have never turned away or pushed anyone out. Those who want [to come] back in are welcome.”

No ‘resources trap’ for Russia

Russia is not at risk of a dependence on selling crude oil, gas, and other natural resources abroad, Putin said, adding that such a threat would only become real if Russia remained passive.

“We must create conditions for the development of innovative sectors of the economy… so that the people needed for work in these spheres come here,” Putin said, referring to the Far East.

He added that Russia’s partners “will gladly invest in those promising enterprises.”

100% security guarantee for Zelensky

Putin reiterated that he is ready for in-person talks with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, but “does not see much sense” in them, explaining that any agreements on the territorial dispute between Moscow and Kiev could be settled only via a referendum in Ukraine.

Russian officials earlier also pointed out that Zelensky’s presidential term expired last year, making him unfit to sign any binding agreements.

At the same time, Putin said he was ready to talk with Zelensky in Moscow, adding that Russia is willing to provide a “100% security guarantee” for the Ukrainian leader. Zelensky earlier declined the invitation.

“We are ready for meetings at the highest level. The Ukrainian side wants this meeting… I said: ‘I’m ready, please come. We will fully ensure the working conditions and security.’”

Foreign troop deployment in Ukraine

There would be “no sense” in a Western troop deployment to Ukraine once a lasting settlement to the conflict is reached, Putin said.

“Nobody should doubt that Russia would implement the agreed terms fully. We will respect security guarantees that both Russia and Ukraine need to be offered,” he added.

The Russian leader also warned that if any Western troops arrive in Ukraine while the hostilities are ongoing, Moscow “would consider them legitimate military targets.”

Arctic cooperation with the US

US companies are ready to engage in economic cooperation in the Arctic with Russia, and Moscow is open to this prospect, although political will is required to kickstart projects, Putin said.

“It is not up to us – we are also ready, but if there are political decisions, we will move in that direction,” he said, adding that Russian gas extraction and liquefaction technologies are more efficient than those developed in the US.

According to Putin, Moscow and Washington have also discussed potential trilateral cooperation in the Russian Arctic with China. Cooperation in the oil and gas sector would be mutually beneficial, the Russian president added.

People before AI

Pivoting to the role of artificial intelligence, Putin remarked that he was certain that AI could be used in the decision-making process.

However, decisions ultimately “must be made by a specific person, who must be accountable,” he added. “You can’t hold artificial intelligence accountable – it is just a tool, it is people who must work.”

IDF demolishes Gaza City towers Hamas used to power tunnels as residents flee south

September 6, 2025, 09:22

The IDF demolished three high-rise buildings in Gaza City over the past 24 hours as part of preparations for the planned takeover of the city in the ongoing Gideon’s Chariots II operation.

The first tower already had a roof damaged in an earlier strike. The second, destroyed Saturday, was notable for the large number of solar panels covering its roof.

In a statement after the strike on the Al-Rawiya building in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, the IDF said Hamas had installed intelligence-gathering equipment and observation posts in the tower and had planted numerous explosive devices nearby.

The solar panels, the military said, may have been connected to a nearby terror tunnel.

The IDF has long accused Hamas of using alternative electricity sources to power its underground infrastructure.

Early in the war, the IDF said shafts discovered in Gaza City’s central Palestine Square were connected to hideouts and offices of Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, both of whom were later killed.

The shafts led to what the military described as “Hamas’s bunker,” a massive underground base powered by Gaza’s main energy grid.

At the time, the IDF said Hamas had secured hundreds of protected generators in a separate underground facility and established a backup network of cables carrying electricity from thousands of rooftop solar panels in nearby residential neighborhoods.

“It is clear that it takes decades to build such a vast, organized complex,” the IDF said nearly two years ago.

In January’s hostage deal, senior Hamas official Bassem Naim stressed that the agreement allowed for the entry of supplies to restore electricity, including generators, solar panels and fuel, followed by rehabilitation of Gaza’s grid.

Those materials were likely brought in during that period, and the solar panels on Al-Rawiya’s roof appear to have powered Hamas facilities until the building’s destruction Saturday.

Along with the strike on Al-Rawiya, the Al-Susi tower was also demolished, leaving hundreds of families homeless.

As the IDF prepared to expand operations, heavy traffic was reported on Gaza’s coastal Al-Rashid road Saturday as residents moved south from Gaza City.

The Association of Displaced Persons in Khan Younis and Rafah said the designated “safe zone” in Al-Mawasi is overcrowded and lacks adequate facilities.

“Basic services in the area have not reached a sufficient level,” the group said. “We call on our people not to be misled by the occupation’s propaganda.

We salute the steadfastness of our people in Gaza and in the north of the Strip against the occupation’s aggression and we stress that they can thwart the displacement plan.”

IDF issues additional urgent warning ahead of strike on Gaza City high-rise

September 6, 2025 1:13 pm

The IDF issues another urgent warning to residents in additional Gaza City neighborhoods, calling for their immediate evacuation ahead of an imminent strike.

Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee says the military is preparing a targeted strike on a Gaza City high-rise and adjacent tents, which he says contain Hamas terror infrastructure.

Civilians have been instructed to head south toward the designated humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis.

The warning comes as Israeli forces press deeper into Gaza City with the intention of dismantling Hamas’s remaining strongholds, while simultaneously urging civilians to evacuate southward for their safety.

Yesterday, the IDF struck another high-rise in the city, also alleging that it was being used by Hamas for military purposes.

US plans restrictions on imports of Chinese drones and heavy-duty vehicles

05/09/2025 17:35 MYT

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration plans to issue rules to restrict or potentially bar imports of Chinese drones and medium and heavy-duty vehicles after an earlier crackdown on cars and trucks, citing national security concerns.

The U.S. Commerce Department on Friday said it plans to issue rules as soon as this month to address national security risks involving information and communications technology that is integral to drones and their supply chain, as well as vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds from countries like China and other foreign adversaries.

It did not give details on what the import rules would be.

The Commerce Department and Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately comment.

Chinese imports account for the vast majority of U.S. commercial drone sales. More than half come from DJI, the world's largest drone manufacturer.

The planned restrictions on drones and heavy-duty vehicles follow on from similar rules already scheduled on imports of cars and other trucks.

Democratic former President Joe Biden's administration finalized rules in January that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market starting in late 2026, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China.

The Commerce Department in January said it could also target for restrictions drone systems like onboard computers, communications and flight control systems, ground control stations, operating software and data storage.

The department opened national security investigations into the import of drones and related components in July and into medium and heavy duty vehicles and parts in April, which could lead to higher tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump in June signed executive orders to bolster defenses against threatening drones and to boost U.S. drone manufacturing.

In December, Biden signed legislation that could eventually ban DJI and Autel from selling new drone models in the United States.

Amprius Boosts U.S. Battery Production as Drone Market Surges

September 6, 2025

To meet growing demand for drones in the U.S., aircraft battery developer Amprius has begun shipping its SiCore high-energy lithium-ion batteries from a pilot production line in Fremont, California, as contract manufacturing partners in China and South Korea continue to carry out mass production abroad.

Among the first customers to receive SiCore battery cells from the Fremont facility is Airbus subsidiary Aalto, which has been using them to power a solar-powered high-altitude pseudo satellite called Zephyr.

Earlier this year, the autonomous Zephyr aircraft completed a record-setting 67-day flight using solar panels to charge Amprius’ batteries.

“Amprius’ SiCore cells represent a major advancement in energy performance, supporting the ultra-lightweight, long-endurance requirements of our high-altitude operations,” said Aalto chief technology officer Pierre-Antoine Aubourg.

“Their silicon anode technology has already enabled Zephyr to operate in the stratosphere overnight for months at a time, an unprecedented milestone in persistent flight.

We look forward to working with Amprius as we qualify their next-generation cells to power the future of Stratospace innovation.”

The recently expanded pilot production line at Amprius’ Fremont headquarters will prototype custom SiCore battery solutions for prospective customers who are in the qualification stage, in which the battery packs are integrated and tested before a new aircraft heads to production.

Amprius president Tom Stepien told AIN that the qualification process can take anywhere between three and 18 months. If and when a customer settles on a configuration and places high-volume orders, those orders will ship from Amprius’ existing contract manufacturing partners overseas.

Amprius is the only battery manufacturer currently capable of producing lithium-ion batteries with an energy density of 500 Wh/kg, Stepien said.

He noted that the company’s SiMaxx battery platform demonstrated an energy density of 517 Wh/kg in a recent exercise with the U.S. Army, outperforming expectations.

According to Stepien, the high energy density combined with ultra-lightweight materials in Amprius’ batteries can double an electric aircraft’s range and endurance.

“It’s about maximizing the value of the mission,” he said. “If you can have the same energy with less weight, or the same weight with more energy, then your mission, simplistically, should be twice as long.”

Aviation Industry Dominates Amprius’ Order Book

Since Amprius began commercializing its high-energy batteries in 2018, the company has engaged with hundreds of customers in the drone and light electric vehicle sectors.

In the past two years alone, around 320 customers have sampled Amprius’ batteries, Stepien said. In its second-quarter financial filings, the company reported shipments to 93 customers, including 43 first-time buyers and 50 repeat customers.

Aalto, BAE Systems, and the U.S. Army were among the recipients of those deliveries.

Amprius partly attributes the recent increase in demand for drone technologies to President Donald Trump’s June 2025 executive order promoting domestic drone manufacturing, as well as a Department of Defense directive issued in July that prioritizes American-made drones for procurement.

About 90% of the company’s revenues come from the aviation sector, with a majority of customers using SiCore batteries to power electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems on uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones.

It is also working with manufacturers of passenger-carrying electric aircraft with up to six seats, Stepien said.

The company has not disclosed many of its customers in the eVTOL sector, but it has previously announced orders from three undisclosed “premier electric aviation manufacturers.”

Last year, California-based Aibot announced that it had selected Amprius to supply the batteries for its electric aircraft product line, which includes small quadcopter drones as well as a larger tilt-wing eVTOL aircraft that can be configured as a heavy-lift cargo drone or a six-passenger air taxi.

Aibot just revealed the product line at the Commercial UAV Expo 2025 in Las Vegas on September 2.

>>23556798

Also on September 2, Amprius announced that European drone manufacturer Nordic Wing selected its SiCore cells to power its Astero ISR aircraft, a fixed-wing UAV designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations in combat scenarios.

“Amprius’ batteries have fundamentally changed how our drones operate in the field,” said Nordic Wing founder Jonas Dyhr. “With a significant increase in flight time, our drones can stay airborne longer, cover more ground, and deliver real-time intelligence without interruptions.

This enhanced endurance doesn’t just improve performance; it redefines what’s possible in every mission and can mean the difference between success and failure.”

Until recently, Amprius’ pilot line in Fremont was focused on SiMaxx batteries, a more advanced and costly platform that the company is producing in-house at a much lower volume.

That’s because SiMaxx batteries require highly specialized manufacturing processes that are capital-intensive and difficult to scale.

Featuring 100% silicon anode lithium-ion cells, the SiMaxx line offers the highest energy density commercially available—500 Wh/kg—along with ultra-fast charging speeds.

SiCore batteries, on the other hand, deliver up to 400 Wh/kg with reduced charging speeds at a fraction of the cost compared with the SiMaxx line. Amprius launched the SiCore line in 2024 as a low-cost, scalable alternative to SiMaxx.

Because SiCore batteries can be made using the same equipment and techniques as other lithium-ion batteries, production is easier to outsource.

“These contract manufacturers are making cells that are standard anodes, and the next day, they’re making cells that use the silicon anodes from Amprius [with the] same standard equipment,” Stepien told AIN.

“SiCore is good enough in many cases, and since it is using standard equipment, we can price it lower than SiMaxx.”

Boosting Domestic Battery Production

Bringing SiCore production to Fremont might help U.S.-based customers avoid some import tariffs early on, but not for long.

Customers in the qualification stage could order a couple hundred battery cells from Fremont for testing, but larger orders for serial production will still come from factories in China and South Korea.

“Customers recognize that if they have to prescribe the country of origin for the batteries that they may be paying higher for the U.S. compared to other parts of the world,” Stepien said.

However, he noted that 86% of Amprius’ revenues from batteries in the last quarter came from international sales and were not subject to U.S. tariffs. At the same time, customers within the country have begun to ask for “U.S.-made” batteries, he said.

In 2023, Amprius announced plans to build a large-scale production facility in Brighton, Colorado, but those plans were put on hold indefinitely earlier this year.

“Our ability to move forward with the design and the capacity in Brighton is really dependent on a number of macro things going on, not the least of which is tariffs, government incentives, supply and demand,” Amprius chief financial officer Sandra Wallach told investors in a recent earnings call.

“At this point, we have more than enough capacity…to serve the foreseeable future,” she said, “but we are keeping those lines of communication open if something does change that would make it more economically viable to move forward with Brighton at this time.”

Amprius Scores $10.5 Million Defense Contract

To help meet demand for a domestic battery supply, Amprius is bringing new capabilities to its Fremont line, including electrode manufacturing, with the help of a $10.5 million contract it received from the U.S. government’s Defense Innovation Unit in July.

As part of that contract, Amprius will work to begin qualifying battery components and materials—including separators, cathodes, and anode powders—made by the U.S. and its NATO or “Five Eyes” partner countries.

According to Stepien, this will help establish a supply chain for batteries that complies with the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which prohibits federal agencies from procuring certain products from China, as well as the trading policies of partner nations.

U.S. Army integrates counter-drone tactics into armored warfare during Operation Return of the Condor

6 Sep, 2025 - 7:09

Operation Return of the Condor, held on August 27, 2025, at Fort Hood, Texas, has emerged as a pivotal milestone in the U.S. Army’s tactical adaptation to drone threats on the modern battlefield.

Designed as a full-spectrum combat simulation, the exercise integrated small unmanned aircraft systems into live maneuver operations involving M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

This effort marked a deliberate shift from passive drone defense to active, integrated countermeasures within armored formations.

The tactical focus of the Operation Return of the Condor centered on evaluating how drone surveillance and strike threats affect mechanized ground units during movement and in contact.

The exercise introduced multiple layers of electronic warfare, including radio frequency detection, passive radar sensing, and jamming capabilities, directly embedded into operational formations.

These systems were tested in real time as Bradleys maneuvered across varied terrain under simulated drone observation and engagement, replicating conditions now regularly encountered in modern conflicts.

Rather than isolating counter drone measures within air defense units, the exercise emphasized their integration into maneuver elements.

The Bradleys operated as both offensive assets and mobile counter drone platforms, supported by sensor nodes positioned across the battlespace.

This distributed detection network was designed to provide 360-degree coverage against low, slow, and small drone threats, while preserving freedom of maneuver and tactical momentum.

Each detection asset was linked to digital command systems, enabling rapid decision-making and synchronized response across units.

The presence of active drone threats during live movement drills tested the Army’s ability to apply countermeasures without degrading operational tempo.

Target acquisition systems on the Bradleys were aligned with passive surveillance tools, allowing operators to track, classify, and respond to incoming aerial platforms while continuing their ground mission.

The tactical challenge was not simply to detect drones, but to do so under battlefield conditions where every second and every decision matters.

One of the core advancements tested during the operation was the integration of multi-sensor fusion algorithms capable of correlating radio emissions, thermal signatures, and visual inputs into a unified threat picture.

This allowed crews to prioritize threats based on proximity, behavior, and platform type.

The use of onboard computing power to process and relay threat data in motion reflects the Army’s ongoing effort to decentralize counter drone capability, pushing decision-making and situational awareness to the lowest tactical level.

>>23556823

The exercise also served to validate counter drone tactics under high mobility conditions.

During coordinated assaults and defensive maneuvers, Bradleys deployed with full awareness of drone activity overhead, adjusting formations and speed to maintain tactical cover and signal discipline.

Electronic warfare units provided protective envelopes, disrupting potential drone-guided targeting without exposing their own emissions.

This synchronized movement between armored elements and electronic warfare support units is now seen as a critical capability in future large-scale combat operations.

Return of the Condor demonstrated that counter drone systems must evolve beyond static defense roles and become fully integrated into the combined arms fight.

The modular configuration of sensors and jammers tested on the Bradleys suggests a path forward for equipping armored and mechanized formations with scalable, platform-agnostic counter UAS solutions.

As adversaries continue to deploy increasingly autonomous and networked drone swarms, the ability to counter such threats from within armored maneuver units will be a decisive factor in battlefield survivability and effectiveness.

Crucially, the exercise also reflected battlefield lessons drawn directly from the war in Ukraine, where the rapid rise of commercial drones has redefined tactical realities.

In Ukraine, drone-enabled artillery strikes have devastated armored columns and exposed the vulnerabilities of traditional force structures to persistent low-altitude surveillance.

Return of the Condor addressed this threat profile by focusing on real-time drone detection under armor and on-the-move, as well as how to disrupt drone-based fire correction before it results in massed indirect fire.

The war in Ukraine has shown that the tempo of drone operations far exceeds traditional kill chains.

To counter this, the Army used Return of the Condor to test sensor fusion and fast signal-processing capabilities that enable near-instant identification and targeting of aerial threats.

In addition, Ukraine’s experience with loitering munitions, kamikaze drones, and swarm tactics has pushed U.S. planners to evaluate how armored units can maneuver without becoming visible signatures for precision-guided attacks.

The Fort Hood exercise addressed this by training Bradley crews in radar avoidance, electromagnetic discipline, and the use of active deception to confuse drone ISR platforms.

The inclusion of electronic warfare elements in Return of the Condor also reflects a direct response to Ukrainian battlefield conditions, where contested electromagnetic environments are the norm.

The U.S. Army replicated those conditions during the exercise to stress-test the reliability of battlefield communications, GPS navigation, and RF-dependent sensors under jamming and spoofing attempts.

This level of realism ensures that crews are prepared to operate even when systems degrade or fail under enemy interference.

Looking ahead, the results of Operation Return of the Condor are expected to influence not only immediate tactical doctrine but also future vehicle design, particularly in the development of the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle.

Lessons from the exercise will inform sensor placement, data processing requirements, and how future combat vehicles can be built from the ground up with integrated counter drone capabilities as standard.

As the U.S. Army continues to prepare for near-peer conflict in complex and contested environments, exercises like Return of the Condor offer more than validation.

They define the tactical architecture of future ground combat, where detection, electronic warfare, and maneuver are no longer separate functions, but inseparable components of a unified battlefield response.

The historic Scottish abbey near Glasgow where you can find Alien 'Xenomorph' gargoyle

04:30, 5 SEP 2025

Now that summer is over, we are facing the wet and grey weather that is synonymous with autumn. This means that many Scots have spent a lot of time indoors lately catching up on television.

August saw the premiere of the highly anticipated Alien: Earth, which is the first TV series in the iconic Alien franchise. The new show has delighted Alien fans, with many saying it is a worthy successor to the classic 1979 film by Ridley Scott.

With each episode of Alien: Earth being more tense than the last, many Scots watching will be itching to get their Alien fix. If this sounds like you, believe it or not the Daily Record's latest Walk of the Week might be perfect for you.

Paisley Abbey is a historic abbey that is located in the centre of the Renfrewshire town of Paisley. It is situated around seven miles from the centre of Glasgow, or 30 minutes by car.

The abbey was founded in the 1160s by Anglo-Norman baron Walter FitzAlan, though a majority of the original building was ruined by fire in 1307 and restored in the fourteenth century.

It features a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture that takes your breath away. While Paisley Abbey's history and architecture already make it worth a visit, it is another aspect of the church that we are interested in today.

All around the outside of the abbey are a collection of gargoyles, and one of them is modelled after the Xenomorph from Alien.

It may seem odd to find a gargoyle based on a creature from a movie that is just 50 years old at an abbey that dates back centuries. It is actually a funny story that begins in the early 1990s.

In 1991, the gargoyles that had called Paisley Abbey home for hundreds of years had to be replaced as they were in a poor state and presented a potential safety risk. As a result, an Edinburgh stonemason was hired to create replacement statues.

According to tradition, no two gargoyles are allowed to look the same. The artist therefore used this as an opportunity to get a bit creative with his designs.

The stonemason was obviously inspired by the original Xenomorph that appeared in the 1979 movie Alien, which was designed by Swiss artist HR Giger.

The gargoyle has biomechanical features, including various tubes, and a long otherworldly head.

The grand Paisley Abbey dates back all the way to the 12th century, and is recognised as the cradle of the Royal House of Stewart. It was given the status of an Abbey in 1245, when it was dedicated to St Mary, St James, St Mirin, and St. Milburga.

When walking around the perimeter of the jaw-dropping abbey, it would be easy to miss the Alien gargoyle. In fact, many visitors do not even know the incredible sculpture exists.

The gargoyle takes clear inspiration from the Xenomorph that first appeared in the 1979 movie Alien and was designed by Swiss artist H. R. Giger.

The amazing piece of art features a long skull and tubes protruding from its jaw, and has an overall biomechanical look that immediately sets it apart from the surrounding gargoyles.

If you are already at Paisley Abbey, it would be a shame not to step inside. The Abbey—as well as its shop and cafe—are usually open between Monday and Saturday, while guided tours led by experts are also available.

Walking inside Paisley Abbey, you can almost feel the history. The abbey is also a wedding venue, and it is hard to imagine a more spectacular place to get married.

Illinois Man Records Sky Object Over Fox Lake No One Can Explain

September 6, 2025

Fox Lake is one of the more scenic places in Illinois.

It's also the place were a strange object was just spotted hovering over the water and a man captured the unexplained phenomena on video.

If you've never been to Fox Lake in Illinois, this is what it looks like on a beautiful day. It's a village in Lake County.

According to the National UFO Reporting Center, Fox Lake, Illinois was the scene of a bizarre flying object appearance late at night on August 13, 2025.

At around 10:35pm that night, a man said that he saw a large light seem to hover over the waters of Fox Lake much brighter than an airplane and making no sound.

At first he thought it might be a rocket, but then it slowed down and stopped. You really should watch the video that he shared on the NUFORC site. I've never seen anything quite like it.

His video is 47 seconds long. According to his description, the encounter lasted around 5 minutes.

He mentioned that Fox Lake is about 40 miles from O'Hare International Airport. I have to wonder if it might be a large drone. If that's the case, what is it doing over Fox Lake this late at night?

There might be a conventional explanation, but I still haven't heard any rational theories to explain what he saw that night yet. Call Mulder and Scully because the truth is out there.

Joe Rogan Guest Pushes Claims of Labyrinths Under Pyramids

Sep 05, 2025 at 12:26 PM EDT

Ben van Kerkwyk, who runs the channel Uncharted X, appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience on Thursday, where he shared claims that there are labyrinths under the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Newsweek has reached out to van Kerkwyk via email for comment.

Why It Matters

In recent years theories and rumors about the pyramids have circulated online, with speculation spilling over into the mainstream, including theories that people other than the ancient Egyptians—or even aliens—could have built them.

Earlier this year, a group of Italian researchers from the Khafre Project said they had discovered an underground complex or city under the pyramids—a claim that prominent Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has refuted as "fake news."

What To Know

Rogan has previously spoken about the pyramids on his highly popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

In the latest episode, van Kerkwyk, who describes himself in his YouTube bio as a "long-time student and fan of history," shares his claims that there is a labyrinth underneath the pyramids.

He spoke about these claims in a two-hour-long YouTube video, uploaded in August, which as of press time has been viewed over 1.5 million times.

In that video, titled, "The Unknown Ancient Site said to be 'Greater than the Pyramids?'

Confirmed with Satellite scans!," Van Kerkwyk shares his claims that multi-level labyrinths exist under the pyramids.

Van Kerkwyk, who is an independent researcher, speaks about his claims and findings on Rogan's podcast.

"In my opinion, honestly, the labyrinth is the biggest archaeological discovery of the millennium. When we get into what that structure is and how big it is and the way it's reported in antiquity, there's nothing bigger," he says in the episode.

Previous outlandish claims about ancient Egypt and the pyramids have been dismissed by experts. These include Hawass, a former Egyptian minister of antiquities, who previously appeared on Rogan's podcast.

Both Hawass and Rogan have both spoken negatively about this appearance, describing it as the "worst" they have ever done.

Hawass has repeatedly dismissed the idea that there is an underground city beneath the pyramids of Giza as "fake news."

"If aliens built the pyramids, there would be something in the ground. I have been excavating in Egypt for decades, and I've found nothing to indicate anything but human activity," Hawass previously told The New York Post.

What People Are Saying

Joe Rogan, writing in a post on X after the episode aired: "This episode was really fun.

Ben Van Kerkwyk is an incredible reservoir of information on the mysteries of ancient Egypt, and after I saw his recent YouTube video on the insane Labyrinths they've discovered there I had to have him on."

The description for the Uncharted X video "The Unknown Ancient Site said to be 'Greater than the Pyramids?'" reads in part:

"From classical antiquity comes legends and stories of an Ancient Egyptian site so large and complex that it is said to exceed all the works of the ancient world, including the majestic pyramids of Egypt!"

Zahi Hawass previously told Newsweek: "[Rogan] clearly has an agenda aimed at denying that Egyptians built the pyramids. At the very least, that's nonsense.

I didn't let him push that narrative—I responded with all the evidence. He produced a podcast about the pyramids featuring Zahi Hawass, but he didn't even read."

3 People Silenced for UFO Research That Threatens Power

September 5, 2025

A troubling pattern emerges when examining three individuals whose work challenges conventional understanding of unexplained phenomena silencing their UFO research and investigations.

According to testimony featured on the Dennis World podcast, astronomer Dr. Beatriz Villarroel, ocean explorer Dennis Åsberg, and former Air Force pilot Jake Barber have each encountered organized resistance to their investigations — resistance that suggests institutional knowledge of phenomena beyond public acknowledgment.

Her findings, which should have warranted serious scientific discussion, revealed extraordinary temporal correlations.

According to Villarroel’s analysis of over 100,000 transient objects in pre-satellite photographic plates, anomalous objects appeared on July 19th and July 27th of 1952 — precisely matching the dates of radar-confirmed UFO activity over Washington, D.C. The probability of this correlation occurring by chance, according to her calculations, stands at 0.0001 percent.

More significantly, her data indicates transients were 45% more likely within one day of nuclear testing, with each additional UAP report correlating with an 8.5% increase in transient detection.

Dennis Åsberg’s 2011 discovery of the Baltic Sea Anomaly adds a physical dimension to these statistical findings.

According to Åsberg’s account the 60-meter circular object located 91 meters underwater consistently disables modern equipment when investigation teams position directly above it.

“We have problems with the GPS,” Åsberg described, noting that interference patterns occur repeatedly during expeditions to the site. The phenomenon extends beyond GPS failures to include camera shutdowns, light malfunctions, and phantom radar contacts.

Reference to the 2012 investigations reveals that six NATO ships appeared in the vicinity, and according to Åsberg, his team was required to hand over all findings to Swedish military authorities.

Sub-bottom profiling of the anomaly reveals internal structures that challenge natural formation theories.

According to sonar data referenced in the discussion, rectangular corridors are visible within the object, suggesting engineered rather than geological origins.

The precision of these structures indicates deliberate construction rather than random deposition, yet mainstream scientific institutions have largely dismissed the findings without conducting direct analysis.

Jake Barber’s military testimony provides context for why such suppression might exist. His 30-year Air Force career included helicopter-assisted retrievals of craft later confirmed by government task force members as non-human technology.

“It was a highly sensitive operation that turned out to be crash retrieval of a non-human craft,” Barber stated, describing an egg-shaped object he transported during classified operations.

Barber’s testimony extends beyond physical retrieval operations into consciousness interaction phenomena. According to his description, during retrieval of an eight-sectioned disc craft, he experienced what he characterized as direct consciousness interface.

“I ended up getting an overwhelming sense of like I was possessed by something,” Barber recounted, describing an emotional and spiritual connection that intensified with proximity to the object. This experience, according to Barber, continues to influence his decisions and actions.

The electromagnetic effects Barber describes mirror those encountered by Åsberg. Per Barber’s account, helicopter systems froze mid-flight despite engines running normally, accompanied by GPS failures and radar jamming during close encounters.

“Everything starts going haywire inside the helicopter,” Barber stated, describing how his aircraft became unresponsive for approximately two minutes before he could retreat from the object’s vicinity.

The coordination of suppression across these three independent lines of research suggests institutional awareness of these phenomena.

SETI researchers face blacklisting for publishing correlations, NATO ships monitor underwater investigations, and military pilots report identical electromagnetic effects across different encounters.

This pattern indicates active concealment rather than passive ignorance of anomalous phenomena.

Historical suppression extends the timeline of institutional resistance.

According to references in the discussion, Donald Menzel, Harvard Observatory director and prominent UFO skeptic, allegedly destroyed portions of photographic plate collections in 1952 and halted sky surveys for fifteen years during peak anomalous activity periods.

The testimonies and research findings presented raise fundamental questions about scientific transparency and the mechanisms by which potentially paradigm-shifting discoveries are managed by established institutions.

The consistency of suppression tactics across different fields and time periods indicates organizational rather than coincidental resistance to investigating anomalous phenomena.
