For much of the past two months, ever since the historic loss of Japan's LDP in July's parliamentary elections, we have mocked the highly unpopular Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, who was clinging to the post despite record disapproval and a clear shift in popular sentiment that had clearly stripped him of mandate to be Japan's leader.

A few hours ago, Ishiba finally decided to prove us wrong and announced he will step down - following weeks of calls for his departure - a decision that will set in motion a leadership race that may generate concerns for investors.

“While I feel there are still things I wish to do as premier, I have made the difficult decision to step down,” Ishiba said at a press conference in Tokyo on Sunday. “Having seen the US trade negotiations through, I felt that now is the right time to stand down and give way to my successor.”

“I felt that if I continued amid a vote on an early leadership race, it could have created an irreversible division within the party, which is certainly not my intention.” He will stay on as prime minister until his successor takes over.

Ishiba’s resignation brings to an end a tenure marked by humiliating election results that stripped the Liberal Democratic Party’s ruling coalition of its majorities in both chambers of parliament and left market participants unsure of Japan’s fiscal plans. Putin Invited Zelensky To Moscow, Who Responds "I Can't Go To The Capital Of This Terrorist"

Russian state media sources have of late been alleging a secret Western plot to replace Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. These reports have continued through August and into September, but the scenario has obviously not come to fruition.

A prime candidate to replace him would be former chief of the armed forces, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny - who Zelensky fired last year and shipped off to London to be ambassador there. Since then, Ukraine's military has been doing even worse on the battlefield, according to The Wall Street Journal and many other reports.

Russia's TASS has claimed there's a specific plot afoot, reporting a so-called "triumvirate" consisting of Andriy Yermak (head of the Ukrainian presidential office), Kyrylo Budanov (military intelligence chief), and Gen. Zaluzhny (former commander-in-chief and current ambassador to the UK), are actively working with the US and UK to replace President Zelensky with Zaluzhny.

Ukrainian media has also picked up on this, but has dismissed it as Russian wartime propaganda:

The SVR said the “conspiracy” was the underlying cause “…of the recent scandalous attempt by ‘Kyiv’s president’ to restrict the powers of the local anti-corruption mechanisms.” This was in reference to the proposed legal attempts to limit the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

But Zelensky has, under pressure from Western partners, dutifully reversed his legal move against said anti-corruption bodies.

Several reports by the end of July indicated he "backtracked" amid domestic and international criticism. Still, the Russian media reports claimed this revealed cracks in his support base, emboldening those plotting against him.

But given Zelensky's recent appearance in Paris for a collective defense conference alongside President Macron, and given he's readying a plan with NATO allies for 'security guarantees' - it doesn't seem like he's going anywhere soon.

President Putin has repeatedly called Zelensky out as 'illegitimate' - but still while in Beijing this past week indicated he's open to inviting him to Moscow for talks.

Putin caveated that this would have to be premised on real progress at the negotiating table, however. He actually appeared to throw out an open invitation, at least according to US officials who informed Zelensky of the overture.

Finnish MP reveals past in prostitution

Anna Kontula has said she worked as an escort from age 16 before switching to politics

that she was a sex worker for years before entering politics. In an interview with the new outlet Helsingin Sanomat (HS) published on Saturday, Kontula said she is not ashamed of the experience, adding that it helped shape her political career.

Kontula, 48, is serving her fourth term in the Finnish Parliament. While she has long campaigned for sex workers’ rights, she had never spoken publicly about her own experience.

Kontula told HS she began escorting at 16 while living in a student dorm, and said the choice came from both financial hardship and curiosity. “If I wanted to somehow make ends meet… it was a pretty rational solution,” she explained.

She worked in the industry on and off for nearly two decades and became an outspoken advocate. In 2002, she co-founded the sex workers’ union SALLI and published articles challenging public perceptions of the industry. When Finland passed a 2006 law partly restricting the purchase of sex, she saw it as a partial victory, noting it included protections for trafficking victims.

Kontula has served in parliament since 2011, continuing to campaign for sex workers’ rights. When asked why she decided to speak out now, she told HS: “Talking about the topic now can bring benefits to social debate [on sex work] and its direction.” She has announced she will not seek reelection and is training to become a social worker, including providing safe-sex education.

Kontula’s coming out has already drawn criticism. In an opinion piece published in HS on Sunday, legal psychologist Pia Puolakka called it “worrying” that the MP described sex work as “just work among others,” and argued that “normalizing sex work does not make society freer or fairer.”

Belgium to Deploy Military to Multicultural Capital Brussels to Combat Drug Gangs

Drug gang crime has become so out of control in Brussels that military forces will be deployed to the Belgian capital, the government announced this weekend.

The increasingly violent situation in Brussels, fueled in large part by drug gangs often of North African descent, such as the infamous multinational Morco Mafia, has spurred the government to take drastic action in the multicultural city, in which around four in ten residents are now foreign nationals.

Minister of the Interior Bernard Quintin told De Standaard: “We don’t want to lose domestic territory… The army must defend the integrity of the territory. Military personnel usually do this at our borders or far beyond. But the war against drug crime also falls under the protection of our territory.”

“Only the modalities still need to be worked out,” Quintin added. “Anyone who doesn’t see an emergency situation now has been living on a different planet for the past year.”

The Interior Minister said that he was inspired by a recent conversation with a local police officer, who told him that drug gangs are “not afraid of the blue anymore,” but they still fear the military uniforms of soldiers.

“By deploying the army, the state demonstrates its willingness to use all its power for the safety of its citizens,” he said, adding that soldiers will be deployed in mixed units with police.

Although Quintin denied that there are any “no-go zones in Belgium yet, he warned that “there are places where it is difficult and that we are in danger of losing.”

Houthi drone evades defenses, smashes into Ramon Airport terminal in south; one hurt

A drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels evaded Israeli air defenses and smashed into the Ramon Airport terminal in southern Israel on Sunday, the Israeli military said, adding that it was investigating why it had failed to detect the explosive-laden aircraft.

A 63-year-old man was lightly injured by shrapnel from the blast, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. The man, along with a woman who fell over while running from the scene, was taken to Yoseftal Medical Center in Eilat for treatment. Several other people required treatment for acute anxiety, MDA added.

The unmanned aerial vehicle struck the passenger terminal at the airport north of Eilat, causing damage, according to airport authorities.

Images from the scene showed shattered glass and debris at an area where baggage is screened. A thick pall of black smoke rose over the terminal and people could be seen running for cover.

ChatGPT boss suggests the ‘dead internet theory’ might be correct

OpenAI’s Sam Altman criticised for his role in AI-powered accounts taking over the web

Sam Altman, the chief executive of ChatGPT creators OpenAI, has suggested that there might be some truth in the “dead internet theory”.

The idea is a conspiracy theory that the majority of content and apparent people online are actually being automatically generated by computers, and that the internet is for the most part “dead”.

While it has often been debunked, the wide spread of artificial intelligence systems in recent years as well as failed attempts at crackdowns on bots on platforms such as X, formerly known as Twitter, mean that it has been given increasing credence.

And now Mr Altman has suggested that despite his having previously disbelieved the theory, there may be some truth in it.

“i never took the dead internet theory that seriously but it seems like there are really a lot of LLM-run twitter accounts now,” he wrote.

LLMs, or large language models, are the technology that underpins ChatGPT as well as other similar offerings such as Anthropic’s Claude.

That led to an outcry in response to his statement, from users who suggested that his role at the top of OpenAI had directly contributed to the problem he was warning about.

The release of ChatGPT to the public in late 2022 led to a flurry of other similar systems being made available online, and made it much easier for both genuine and malicious users to automatically generate content and posts for online platforms.

Others also suggested that Mr Altman’s tweet could be informed by his work on the World Network, which was previously known as Worldcoin and which he founded in 2019. That company says that it is aiming to make a way for humans to prove their real identity online, by scanning their eyes, which has been promoted as a way of stopping the influence of AI-powered systems online.

DOJ says names of two associates Epstein wired $100k and $250k to should stay secret

The Justice Department request came after NBC News asked a federal judge to unseal the names of two people Epstein paid and helped protect from prosecution.

The Justice Department on Friday asked a federal judge overseeing the case of deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to deny a request from NBC News to unseal the names of two associates who received large payments from him in 2018, court documents show. The Justice Department cited privacy concerns expressed by the two individuals as the reason for not making their names public.

The first associate received a payment of $100,000 from Epstein and the second associate received a payment of $250,000, both in 2018, days after the Miami Herald began publishing a series of investigative stories where victims criticized a plea deal he received in Florida in 2008.

As part of the plea agreement, Epstein secured a statement from federal prosecutors in Florida that the two individuals would not be prosecuted.

The payments became public after Epstein was indicted and arrested in New York in 2019 and asked to be released on bail. Federal prosecutors in New York filed a memorandum on July 16, 2019, that argued Epstein should remain in jail to prevent him from tampering with witnesses.

They cited the payments he made to the two individuals, which began two days after the Miami Herald began publishing its stories on Epstein’s plea deal, also known as a nonprosecution agreement, or NPA.

Prosecutors wrote that on Nov. 30, 2018, Epstein “wired $100,000 from a trust account he controlled, to an individual named as [REDACTED] a potential co-conspirator — and for whom Epstein obtained protection in — the NPA.”

Prosecutors also wrote that “this individual was also named and featured prominently in the Herald series.”

Projections suggest an additional 35 to 108 gigawatts of demand by 2030. The midpoint estimate, 50 gigawatts, is enough to power every home in California.

The very fact that such a memo was necessary highlights a structural reality: the pace of technological build out is outstripping the pace of legislative comprehension. If institutions themselves are still catching up, it underscores how important it is for citizens to get informed now, before the costs mount even higher.

Incredibly, Holocaust Museum LA took the post down and essentially apologized for saying non-Jews shouldn't be genocided:

BitChute and Rumble Sued for Violating Own “Terms of Service”: Punitive Penalties Could Run $30 Million Each

Madison, WISCONSIN – August 14, 2025 – Rumble and BitChute were sued today for violating their own terms of service. Many have found themselves the targets of abuse in the past, but the case that prompted these lawsuits may be the most egregious in the history of the Internet. The Plaintiff alleges he has been subjected to egregious forms of harassment, cyberstalking, defamation, and (even) elder abuse over 700 times by videos created by one Victor Hugo Vaca II, which they have published since January of 2025.

The suits were filed by James Fetzer, Ph.D., on behalf of himself and his colleagues who have been attacked for speaking up on his behalf, and every Rumble or BitChute user who has flagged a video only to have the “moderator” reply that it conforms to BitChute or Rumble’s “terms of service”, which declare that those platforms will not allow personal information promoting harm or injury to any group or individual, including libel, slander, doxxing, defamation or violations of privacy rights. Fetzer says “It’s all a sham!” and that they are legally liable for violating their own user contract.

“We submitted dozens upon dozens of complaints to specific videos, which were loaded with defamation and violations of privacy rights”, Fetzer explained. “Yet they came back promptly with claims to have been ‘reviewed and found to be consistent with our terms of service’. Those reviews appear to have been done by AI bots, not human beings. So we sent them both ‘Cease and Desist” demands, identifying the terms of service that were being violated, not just once but 100s of times. No response. Just crickets!” They appear to believe they are immune from liability for their platform users’ content.

The suits were filed separately against BitChute and Rumble at the federal court in the Western District of Wisconsin. While Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act provides broad immunity from litigation stemming from user content, social media platforms lose that immunity when they “materially contribute” to the creation or development of the unlawful content. Fetzer became the target of a relentless defamation campaign across both social media platforms after terminating Vaca, a contributor, from his show on Revolution Radio, “The Raw Deal”, back in January.

After he was terminated, Vaca launched a seven-month defamation campaign, that is still ongoing, in which he sought to discredit, defame, and deplatform Fetzer over his reporting on Sandy Hook. Vaca posted hundreds of videos defaming Fetzer to the point of overwhelming search engines with his defamatory content, which Fetzer describes as “political pornography.” As part of an effort to isolate his target, Vaca defamed colleagues who supported, defended, or hosted Fetzer on their shows through a relentless smear campaign that included obscene thumb nails and grossly false allegations of crimes, sexual misconduct, and more.
