NATO Scrambles Jets As Russian Drones Allegedly Enter Poland's Airspace Overnight

update(1950ET): Sky News is citing Ukraine's air force to say that Russian drones have entered the airspace of Poland, threatening the city of Zamosc - which lies some 40 miles from the Ukrainian border. Some initial sources are citing a 'wave' of drones, but this remains unclear. Per Reuters:

Poland placed its air defenses on the highest state of readiness after Ukraine’s air force warned that Russian drones had crossed into Polish airspace, according to early reports.

The Polish Armed Forces said early Wednesday local time that all necessary procedures were activated to secure national airspace as Russia carried out large-scale overnight strikes on Ukraine.

“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, and ground-based air defense and radar systems have reached the highest level of readiness,” the Operational Command said. It described the measures as preventive and aimed at protecting citizens in regions bordering Ukraine.

However, the initial Polish military statement itself did not specify a Russian breach of Poland's airspace:

This is not a first time that Russian drones have breached Polish airspace, prompting fighter jets to be scrambled, or else searches for crash or landing spots within the Polish side of the border. Some unconfirmed reports have said there have been intercepts over Poland.

Hamas says its leadership survived Israeli strike on Qatar

The attack involved around 15 Israeli warplanes that fired at least ten munitions at a compound used by the Palestinian group

Palestinian militant group Hamas has claimed the Israeli attack on its compound in the Qatari capital of Doha on Tuesday was largely unsuccessful and that its top members survived.

However, the attack did kill the son of Khalil al-Hayya, the group’s political bureau head, as well as a senior aide, according to Suhail al-Hindi, a senior Hamas member. Three bodyguards of the group’s leader remain unaccounted for after the strikes, he told Al Jazeera.

“The blood of the leadership of the movement is like the blood of any Palestinian child,” al-Hindi stated.

The “heinous” Israeli attack was an “attempt to kill those discussing ending the war on Gaza,” he added, corroborating earlier reports that the group’s leadership was hit when it had gathered to discuss the latest US proposals on settling the conflict with Israel.

According to Israeli media reports, some 15 aircraft were involved in the attack, firing more than ten high-precision munitions into the Hamas compound. Israel has insisted the attack was a unilateral action and that no other party was involved in striking “the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization.”

Multiple Israeli media reports, however, suggested that West Jerusalem notified Washington of the impending action ahead of the strike. Moreover, Israeli Channel 12 reported, citing an unnamed official, that US President Donald Trump had given the green light for the attack.

The White House described the Israeli attack as an “unfortunate” incident, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stating the strike at the heart of Qatar, a “close ally” of the US, “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.”

Qatar, which is designated a “major non-NATO ally” of the US, has condemned the “cowardly Israeli attack,” describing the location affected by the strike as “residential buildings housing several members of the political bureau of the Hamas movement.” The country’s Foreign Ministry has denied reports it had any prior knowledge of the attack, stating it received no notification either from Israel or US.

Later in the day, the Qatari Interior Ministry said at least one security officer had been killed and others injured while responding at the site of the attack.

Age Verification Company Exposes User Data, Reinforcing Privacy Fears Over Digital ID Systems

An age-check system built to shield minors ends up exposing adults in granular digital detail.

A company tasked with confirming users’ ages before they access adult content may be compromising their privacy by leaking detailed browsing data, according to a report by the nonprofit AI Forensics.

The group’s investigation highlights serious flaws in how some sites are complying with growing online age-check requirements, raising new concerns about surveillance and data exposure under the guise of protecting children.

France’s law requires that users’ identities remain concealed, not just from adult websites, but from the age verification services themselves.

Known as “double anonymity,” this standard is meant to ensure that those performing the verification process have no knowledge of which websites users are visiting or what content they attempt to access.

But AI Forensics found that AgeGO, one of the verification systems in active use, doesn’t meet those expectations.

Instead, AgeGO’s system reportedly transmits precise details about the user’s activity, including the URL of the video being viewed and the name of the website.

The service also collects facial scans, IP addresses, browser details, and email addresses, then sends this data to Amazon Web Services.

The company, which operates out of Spain and follows looser UK-based privacy rules, did not respond to media inquiries, according to Politico EU.

Operators of adult sites in France say they were pushed to implement systems like AgeGO under tight deadlines following mounting pressure from Arcom, the national media regulator.

Speaking anonymously to Tech&Co, one such operator said, “We had warned in advance that it was not ideal, but the haste was such that we could not do otherwise.”

Since early this year, French users have been required to verify their age before accessing pornographic websites.

Several technical approaches have emerged, but not all of them respect the spirit, or the letter, of France’s privacy laws.

Although the CNIL, France’s data protection authority, and Arcom have yet to publicly address the issue, the latter has acknowledged to Le Parisien that it is reviewing the AI Forensics findings.

As the push for mandatory age checks spreads to more jurisdictions, privacy questions are mounting.

In the US, where the absence of a national privacy law creates wide variations in how personal data is handled, the Age Verification Providers Association is calling for a unified legal framework:

“It is harder to win trust in the US because there is no comprehensive federal privacy law, so people rely on a patchwork of state rules and sector laws. That inconsistency understandably breeds doubt about who holds personal data and for how long,” the group said in a statement this week.

Workarounds exist; privacy-conscious users can turn to paid VPNs or alternative DNS services to avoid local filtering.

Over 400 Genocide Scholars Say That Hamas, Not Israel, Committed Genocide

Four hundred and twenty genocide scholars, survivors, and experts signed a statement affirming that Hamas, not Israel, is guilty of the crime of genocide. The experts also criticized their fellow scholars who falsely accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Scholars for Truth About Genocide (STAG) condemned the inaccurate accusations of the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) against Israel. While IAGS asserted Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, STAG explained why this is false.

“Genocide is the gravest offense known to humankind; to dilute its legal standards for ideological ends is a form of moral violence,” STAG declared.

“It dishonors the memory of past victims, misleads the public about present atrocities, and obstructs efforts to avert future ones.”

Israel will even endanger its own men, sometimes leading to their deaths, trying to avoid killing civilians in Gaza, even though a majority of Gazans support jihad against Israel. In contrast, Hamas brutally rapes and murders Israelis of all ages while the Palestinian Authority financially rewards them.

The statement’s title is “Legal, antisemitism, history, Holocaust, and genocide scholars, former prosecutors, and other authorities, including descendants of survivors, call on International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) to retract resolution accusing Israel of genocide amid clear misapplication of law and history.” Here is the key passage from the STAG experts’ statement:

On October 7, 2023, Hamas invaded Israel and acted with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, Jews and Israelis, as a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group, as such.

Further, Hamas and their allied organizations took innocent people hostage and continue to hold hostages.

Thus, Hamas committed the crime of genocide and remains the only party to legally meet the requirements of the elements of the crime of genocide.

Israeli intel campaign used US comedian in effort to flip Iranian scientists

A mysterious online campaign linked to Israel’s intelligence services attempted to recruit Iranians to overthrow their government. Some appear to have been placed by an Atlanta-based comedian and influencer.

Desi Banks, an Atlanta comedian and content creator, is known for his light-hearted comic sketches and currently has more than nine million followers on the social media platform Instagram. There is no public record of Banks commenting on sensitive Middle East issues, and each of his ad campaigns on Meta’s platforms relates to his work as an entertainer.

The comedian, who did not respond to repeated requests for comment, seems to have served a surprising role in an apparent Israeli intelligence operation over the last year to recruit members of Iran’s security and intelligence services – including those working in nuclear centers – into aiding the overthrow of their government. Would-be defectors were offered both money and the protection of their families.

Google advertising transparency records show that a production company owned by Banks, Desi Banks Productions LLC, served a set of four Persian-language recruitment ads across at least 19 countries, including the U.S., Sweden, France, Germany, India, and numerous others across the Middle East and Africa.

The four ad campaigns included both overt and deceptive redirections into recruitment pages purporting to be run by Israel’s foreign intelligence services, the Mossad. Others advertise lucrative, tax-free jobs at apparently fictitious international consulting firms.

The most aggressive campaign redirected users to the Mossad’s official, Persian-language recruitment form, advising viewers to activate their virtual private network (VPN) before clicking. According to Google’s ad disclosure portal, this campaign was the sole instance of a Google ad directly linking to the Mossad’s official website, mossad.gov.il.

Germany-based family members of Iranian nuclear engineers appear to be a major focus of the effort, as Germany is the only country identified by the Google ad transparency portal as being targeted with all four ad campaigns.

“You are just one click away from making history,” read the Mossad recruitment ad, captioned atop a darkened cartoon of a man walking down a multi-lane road. “Call Now. The future belongs to you.”

This direct call to espionage was targeted to viewers in at least 18 countries, including the United States.

Another of the four international recruitment campaigns used an image of an infant to lure viewers into a Google recruitment form which encourages Iranians to help overthrow their current government.

“If you care about your child’s future, watch this video,” read the banner text of the image of the infant, bringing its viewers into the Google recruitment form instead of playing the promised video when clicked. “Sometimes a click is the start of a transformation,” the ad foreshadowed.

NAB announces job cuts after ANZ slashed thousands of workers

NAB to cut 410 roles in Australia

NAB has become the second of Australia's Big Four banks to announce job cuts this week, with 410 roles on the chopping block.

The news comes after ANZ announced plans to lay off 3,500 staff over the next 12 months as part of a major restructure under its new CEO.

NAB on Wednesday said the cuts would impact 728 workers, which included 410 permanent cuts from its technology and enterprise operations division.

The bank plans to move these roles offshore as it expands into Asia, with 127 roles to be made available in India and Vietnam.

A NAB spokesperson said having a global workforce would lead to better outcomes for customers through extended operating hours, speeding up processes and improving turnaround times.

'We regularly look at the way we work and how we're structured to deliver the best experience we can for our customers,' the spokesperson said.

'The environment we operate in is constantly changing and we need to have the right structures alongside the right skills and capabilities in the right locations to help us deliver for our customers.'

Staff were told on Tuesday and offered support including through career transition services and redeployment options.

Other new roles will created in Australia but no details have been given.

It comes after ANZ said it would slash 3,500 jobs and 1,000 contractors in a bid to simplify processes at the Big Four bank.

'We are operating in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive banking environment,' new chief executive Nuno Matos said.

'Our changes also include ending or reviewing our engagements with consultants and other third parties, impacting around 1,000 managed services contractors.

'While reorganising our teams will change the way we structure the bank and deliver our priorities, what won't change is the dedication of our customer facing bankers who support our customers day in, day out.'

Finance Sector Union national president Wendy Streets accused NAB of betraying hundreds of workers and their families.

'Cuts this deep don't just hurt staff, they hollow out services for customers and communities who rely on NAB,' she said.

'Two banks in two days slashing jobs, it's shameful.

Dr McDermott, a former senior manager (Major Fraud and International Enforcement) with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), notes that the German Stock Market Commission reported that in the days before 9/11, derivatives traded on underwriter Munchener Ruck were twice normal volumes. Munchener Ruck’s share price dropped 22 per cent after the attacks.

On 7 September 2001, the number of ‘put options’* on British Airways was four times normal volumes. British Airways shares dropped 42 per cent over the following week.

Between 6-7 September, 4 744 put options were bought on United Airlines, six times the normal volumes. Assuming that 4 000 of these options were bought by terrorists with advance knowledge of the imminent attacks, these ‘insiders’ would have profited by almost $5 million.

On 10 September, 4 516 put options were bought on American Airlines, 285 times normal volumes. Assuming that 4 000 of these options were purchased by ‘terrorist insiders’, they would have netted a gain of about $4 million.

Dr McDermott:

“Financial stocks also declined after the attacks due to the disruption to trading and the operation of the financial system. The World Trade Centre was the nerve centre of the global financial system, so the attacks were a major disruption to business. Seventy four per cent of the civilian deaths in the attacks were people employed in the financial industry, and many investment banks had head offices in or around the World Trade Centre.”

Morgan Stanley occupied 22 floors of the World Trade Centre and was severely affected by the attacks. Trading of put options on Morgan Stanley stock averaged 27 contracts per day before 6 September, but from 6 – 10 September, 2 157 ‘October $45 put options’ were purchased. Morgan Stanley’s share price fell from US$48.90 to US$42.50 in the aftermath of the attacks. Assuming that 2 000 of these contracts were bought with knowledge of the approaching attacks, these purchasers could have profited by at least $1.2 million.

Merrill Lynch had headquarters near the Twin Towers and averaged 252 contracts per day before 6 September. The period 5-10 September saw 12 215 ‘October $45 put options’ bought. When trading resumed after the attacks, Merrill Lynch’s shares fell from US$46.88 to US$41.50. Assuming that 11 000 option contracts were bought by ‘terrorist insiders’ their profit would have been about $5.5 million.

Elisabet Lann was standing next to the country's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other officials when she suddenly fell over and hit her head on Tuesday.
