Unknown to most the full auto function which became popular in WW2 was for cover fire. This is what it was for as to get in the general area to make them dive for cover to move troop positions. It was not advised to use all the time but only semi auto which was almost as effective it was mainly only used to advance with alot of ammo that was available as well.
