While similar, 7.62x51mm NATO and .308 Winchester are not exactly the same; the 7.62x51mm has thicker case walls, a lower pressure loading, and typically uses a larger military chamber, whereas the .308 Winchester has thinner walls, higher pressure loads, and often uses a tighter commercial chamber. You can safely fire 7.62x51mm ammunition in a rifle chambered for .308 Winchester, but firing .308 Winchester rounds in a 7.62x51mm chamber can be unsafe due to increased pressure.
