Shamash
The middle candle of the menorah, known as the shamash, is the ninth branch and serves a dual purpose. It is used to light the other eight candles each night of Hanukkah, symbolizing the light that illuminates all the others. The shamash candle represents the central branch of the menorah, which is often higher or positioned differently to differentiate it from the other candles. It is also used to kindle the other candles, ensuring that the menorah remains lit throughout the holiday. The shamash candle is a reminder of the importance of service and leadership, illuminating others and serving as a guide and source of light in the community.
