Mauser 98 is just 2 screws. Looks to be a Choate stock on the found rifle. Not mentioned in the description, these are blind magazine stocks. Only 2 screws, magazine spring and follower is separate from barreled action.
Bingo!

Maybe.
Maybe extra capacity for squib-pack?
Maybe it's all a slide?
Mauser 98 barrels are/were made in many calibers, materials, finishes and barrel profiles. Norway rebarrelled tens of thousands of surrendered Kar98k Mausers after WW2 to .30-06.
.30-06 and 8x57mm have an identical case head diameter and extractor grove.
He's probably got the heart of a 25 year old…
Many Mauser 98 variants have straight bolt handles. When sporterized the straight bolt handle is cut off and a bent one added to clear the scope.
Is the rifle a FN1950? It is a Mauser 98. Many countries adopted Mauser 98s and produced them. Not only Germany.
Maybe a Gew98 action that was rebarreled?
