Appeals court allows Planned Parenthood defunding to proceed
While lawsuits proceed, a federal appeals court has allowed implementation of a provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that would eliminate Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood and its affiliates for one year.
The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston has put on hold a preliminary injunction previously issued by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani of Massachusetts, which would have continued Medicaid funding throughout Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit against the Trump administration.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which enacted key items of President Donald J. Trump’s legislative agenda on issues including taxes and immigration, includes a provision eliminating funds to health providers who also perform abortions — but just for one year. Although it was not named in the provision, Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, sued in response, arguing the parameters for ending these funds effectively singled it out.
Twenty-two state attorneys general and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro have also filed a lawsuit challenging the provision.
In a statement praising the First Circuit Court’s actions, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said: “The American people, through Congress, spoke clearly with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Taxpayers should not be forced to spend a dime funding a brutal industry that ends at least 1.1 million lives a year.”
“This is a blow, but the fight isn’t over,” said a statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “We will continue to fight.”
Federal law generally prohibits the use of Medicaid funds for abortion. Supporters of allowing Planned Parenthood to receive Medicaid funds argue the group provides cancer screening and prevention services — such as pap tests and HPV vaccinations. But opponents argue the funds are fungible and could be used to facilitate abortion, and therefore the organization should be denied taxpayer funds.
The Catholic Church teaches that all human life is sacred from conception to natural death, and as such, opposes direct abortion.

Man fatally shot during ICE traffic stop after dragging and injuring an officer in Chicago suburb, DHS says
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a man who resisted arrest and dragged the officer during a vehicle stop in a Chicago suburb Friday morning, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The man, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, was an undocumented immigrant, according to DHS. The officer, whose name was not immediately released, sustained severe injuries but is in stable condition, a Homeland Security official told CNN.
The incident happened during a vehicle stop in Franklin Park, a community about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago. Villegas-Gonzalez drove his car at law enforcement officers, hitting one of them and dragging that officer a “significant distance,” according to DHS.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” Tricia McLaughlin, Homeland Security assistant secretary, said in a news release.
“Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended,” she said.
Immigration enforcement operations have been ramping up in the Chicago area over recent days, marking one of the latest escalations between the Trump administration and Democratic-led cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
This week, the administration announced “Operation Midway Blitz,” which Homeland Security officials have described as intended to target undocumented immigrants in Illinois with criminal records. So far, they say, the operation has led to the arrests of undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes, including assault and driving under the influence.
Villegas-Gonzalez was a 38-year-old Mexican national who worked as a cook, according to the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago. He was originally from the Mexican state of Michoacán, the statement said.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is “aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park,” he said in a Facebook post.
“This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” Pritzker said in the post.
The Franklin Police Department referred questions to the FBI. An FBI Chicago spokesperson told CNN in a statement, “The FBI is aware of the incident in Franklin Park and is assisting law enforcement in response. There is no threat to public safety.”
FBI agents were processing the scene on Friday afternoon, a CNN crew observed.
State Rep. Norma Hernandez, who represents the district where the incident occurred, told CNN affiliate WLS she believes ICE’s increasingly aggressive tactics are “bringing more fear into the communities.”
“The Trump administration declared war on American communities here in the state of Illinois and this is what this looks like – to kill innocent people, to ruin families and to break away families. We are not having this,” Hernandez said at a news conference on Friday.
The Mexican consulate said it has requested information from ICE about the events that led to Villegas-Gonzalez’s fatal shooting.
“The Government of Mexico will continue to assist the family in every way necessary and will closely monitor the investigation process related to the incident,” it said.

Chesterfield County School Board Chair Dot Heffron must immediately resign after her comments promoting the murder of Charlie Kirk. Nobody who would cheer murder should be allowed within 100 yards of a student. I call on leaders from both parties to not only publicly condemn her despicable comment and rebuke any endorsement she has made, but also join me in demanding her resignation.
