Planets of the Solar System: Tilts and Spins

How does your favorite planet spin? Does it spin rapidly around a nearly vertical axis, or horizontally, or backwards? The featured video animates NASA images of all eight planets in our Solar System to show them spinning side-by-side for an easy comparison. In the time-lapse video, a day on Earth one Earth rotation takes just a few seconds. Jupiter rotates the fastest, while Venus spins not only the slowest (can you see it?), but backwards. The inner rocky planets across the top underwent dramatic spin-altering collisions during the early days of the Solar System. Why planets spin and tilt as they do remains a topic of research with much insight gained from modern computer modeling and the recent discovery and analysis of hundreds of exoplanets: planets orbiting other stars.

1 week to go until the moon takes a ‘bite’ out of the sun during partial solar eclipse on Sept. 21

September 14, 2025

Get ready, sun lovers! We're just one week away from the Sept. 21 partial solar eclipse.

The moon will appear to take a "bite" from the sun for observers across the South Pacific, including New Zealand, a sliver of eastern Australia, several Pacific islands and portions of Antarctica.

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the sun during a new moon phase, occulting a swathe of its disk while stopping short of blocking it entirely.

Roughly 16.6 million people — or 0.2% of the world population — will see at least some portion of the partial solar eclipse, according to Time and Date.

Viewers will first see the moon take its first bite out of the sun at 1:29 p.m. ET (1729 GMT) on Sept. 21.

Observers located in territories including southern New Zealand and Antarctica will see over 70% of the solar disk occulted by its natural satellite as the eclipse reaches its maximum at 3:41 p.m. ET (1941 GMT) later that same day.

The vast majority of the global population, including those in the Americas, won't see this eclipse in person.

But you can enjoy the action live online as Space.com will be hosting a livestream of the event, with details to follow closer to the time.

You can also keep up with the latest solar eclipse news and progress with our partial solar eclipse live blog.

Prepping for the September partial solar eclipse

NEVER look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. Staring at the sun with the naked eye can lead to immediate and permanent damage to your vision.

As such, anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of the September eclipse, or the upcoming Aug. 12, 2026 total solar eclipse, should read our eclipse glasses guide to ensure that they have the correct safety gear in proper working order with which to view the sun.

Chinese scientists hunt for alien radio signals in 'potentially habitable' TRAPPIST-1 system

September 14, 2025

TRAPPIST-1 is a red dwarf star located about 40 light years away that hosts seven Earth sized rocky planets, with at least three orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water could potentially exist.

This makes it one of the most Solar System like exoplanet systems discovered, with TRAPPIST-1e considered among the best potentially habitable exoplanets.

The system's proximity and multiple potentially habitable worlds make it an ideal target for searching for technological civilizations.

The research team conducted their search using the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) to exploit its unprecedented sensitivity.

The observations consisted of five independent L-band pointings, each with a 20 minute integration, for a total time of 1.67 hours.

The frequency coverage spanned 1.05 to 1.45GHz with a spectral resolution of ~7.5Hz allowing them to detect extremely weak radio signals that might indicate alien technology.

The team led by Guang-Yuan Song from the Dezhou University in China looked for very precise radio frequencies that slowly changed over time due to planetary motion.

Such signals would be virtually impossible to produce naturally and would strongly suggest artificial origin from an advanced civilization.

Based on the configuration of FAST, the researchers had the ability to detect radio signals as weak as 2.04×10^10 watts. This means they were able to detect fainter signals than any previous studies.

If there were aliens transmitting radio signals regularly on a specific frequency, this study would be more likely to find them than earlier attempts.

Alas, the search found no convincing evidence of alien technology. However, rather than being disappointing, this result still provides valuable scientific information.

It places upper limits on the presence of certain types of alien transmitters in the TRAPPIST-1 system and demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of modern SETI searches.

It may be some years or even decades before we can completely rule out life in the TRAPPIST-1 system but at least for now, it remains a compelling target for future SETI efforts.

The team plans to expand their search to look for other types of signals, including periodic or transient transmissions that might be missed by current methods.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence remains one of our most profound scientific endeavors, with the potential to fundamentally transform our understanding of our place in the universe.

As we continue to peer out into space with ever greater precision, we're not just looking for aliens, we're taking the first steps toward what may be the most significant moment in human history.

Putin lauds Moscow as city celebrates 878th birthday

13 Sep, 2025 13:10

Moscow is celebrating its 878th birthday this weekend with hundreds of cultural and public events. Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute on Saturday to the city’s role in the nation’s history.

Speaking at Zaryadye Park concert hall near the Kremlin, Putin called Moscow “one of the best cities on the planet” and extended his warm regards to residents as well as “all who sincerely love the capital.”

He called it a “symbol of destiny and the historical mission of Russia as a state civilization.”

Putin also praised the capital as a strong rear base for the Russian army during the Ukraine conflict.

Moscow, along with more than a dozen other cities throughout the country, has been regularly targeted by Kiev’s drones, which often strike residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also lauded the capital and released a video showcasing the city: “We, diplomats, have visited every city in the world.

And we can say with absolute certainty, there is no other like Moscow,” the video reads. "Happy birthday — capital of civilization!”

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin also addressed the celebrations, underscoring the city’s cultural and political significance for Russia.

Nearly 150 concerts, festivals, contests, sports competitions, and workshops are scheduled across Moscow on Saturday and Sunday to mark City Day, local authorities said.

Ex-Soviet state arrests two Ukrainians with explosives

14 Sep, 2025 12:33

Georgia has arrested two Ukrainians carrying high-grade explosives, allegedly supplied by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), local officials have said.

They are investigating whether the explosives were destined for sabotage operations in Russia or to disrupt Georgia’s upcoming local elections set for early October.

In a statement on Thursday, Georgia’s State Security Service (SSG) said that a vehicle with Ukrainian plates entered via a checkpoint on the Turkish border, after travelling through Romania and Bulgaria.

Hidden in secret compartments were 2.4 kg of hexogen, which SSG called significantly more powerful than TNT.

According to the SSG, one of the detainees testified that SBU officers in Ukraine handed the explosives to the driver, instructing him to deliver them after crossing into Georgia to another person.

SSG Deputy Head Lasha Magradze stated that one of the detainees claimed that the material was meant for use against Russia in a bid to repeat the so-called operation Spiderweb – a Ukrainian drone attack in June that targeted Russia’s strategic aviation.

Moscow confirmed several aircraft were damaged by the dozens of drones sent but rejected Kiev’s claims that around 40 warplanes were destroyed.

However, Magradze also pointed out that some evidence supports the version that the suspects could have been seeking to disrupt the local government elections set for October 4.

Kaha Kaladze, the mayor of Tbilisi and a senior figure in the ruling Georgian Dream party, echoed the concerns, saying the material could have been intended for opposition factions aiming to stir chaos in the ex-Soviet state.

In addition, Georgia is located relatively close to TurkStream and BlueStream pipelines in the Black Sea, which carry Russian gas to Türkiye. Moscow has in the past accused Ukraine of attempting to sabotage TurkStream.

Russian counterintelligence services have on multiple occasions reported arresting Ukrainian agents accused of planning infrastructure attacks. Moscow has frequently labelled such activities as “terrorism.”

European NATO members displeased with US reaction to ‘Russian drone incursion’ – media

14 Sep, 2025 07:20

European NATO states are reportedly ‘dismayed and confused’ by Washington’s reaction to an alleged Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace, according to Reuters.

Some members of the bloc view US President Donald Trump’s reluctance to outright blame Moscow for the incident on Wednesday as a sign that he is not committed enough to their defense, the news agency reported on Saturday, citing unnamed European officials.

US aircraft also played no role in repelling the alleged attack, according to Reuters. US officials said it was because the Dutch military was responsible for Polish airspace within NATO at the time.

“Trump’s handling of the incident has ranged from dismay to confusion and unease,” Reuters said. A German official told the news agency that European NATO members “cannot rely on anything” with the Trump administration.

An Eastern European diplomat called Washington’s “silence” on the matter “almost deafening,” while an Italian official told Reuters that NATO members were mostly displeased with the US reaction.

The Polish government stated that its military tracked at least 19 alleged violations of its airspace by Russian drones over a seven-hour period on Wednesday, describing the episode as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.”

It also convened an emergency UN Security Council meeting over the incident.

Trump downplayed the accusations, suggesting that the alleged incident “could have been a mistake.” He also said he was “not happy about anything having to do with that whole situation” and expressed hope that it would just “come to an end.”

Moscow responded by saying Warsaw’s claims were not supported by evidence and hyped up by the “European party of war.” Drones used in strikes against Ukrainian military targets could not “physically” reach Polish territory, Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said.

European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, condemned the alleged incursion as “reckless” and expressed solidarity with Poland.
