Brass, copper, and lead are easily impressed and embossed with minimal effort, Anon. The rifle's chamber holds the pressure of the discharge. Please educate yourself.

Agreed. Older brass cartridges develop a dark or aged brass patina. Newer brass cartridges have a shiny brass finish. Either is quite soft and can be written upon with a sharp knife, nail/screw, key, etc. That is not to say such a shell casing has been 'engraved'.
